Have you faced challenges in your career and are wondering how you can overcome them? Are you an entrepreneur/business leader/manager who wants his people to achieve more in life? Well half the battle is won if you can conquer the Goliaths in and around you.
4. The Story of David & Goliath
• 1 Samuel 17
– Goliath was a giant in the army of Palestine
– Palestine was at war against the People of God
– Goliath challenged the People of God to send one representative who
could fight against him
– God chose David
Important Characters
David’s Elder Brother Eliab – the “emotional” Goliath
King of Israel Saul – the “authoritative” Goliath
Goliath the Giant – the “able” Goliath
5. The Emotional Goliath
•Do you have entrepreneurial dreams or want to pursue something exciting
but unconventional?
•Do you believe in something others around you or even you may not see?
•If you answered yes to the above two questions, you will definitely come
across an emotional goliath in your life
•This is what David’s eldest brother (family) said to him:
•1 Samuel 17:28 – “Why have you come down here? And with whom
did you leave those few sheep in the wilderness? I know how conceited
you are and how wicked your heart is; you came down only to watch
the battle.”
6. The Authoritative Goliath
•How many times have you reported to someone at work who tries to
oppress you from following your dreams/taking higher responsibilities and
achieving something big in life?
•How often have authorities made it difficult if you want to do something
good for your people/peers/customers?
• This is what David’s Boss, King Saul said to him:
•1 Samuel 17: 33 – “You are not able to go out against this Philistine
and fight him; you are only a young man, and he has been a warrior
from his youth.”
7. The Able Goliath = The Challenge Itself
•How many times have you come under an “ability” attack from your own
self?
•How many times have people doubted your “ability” to do something
extraordinary?
•Here’s what Goliath ( the challenge ) said to David (We):
• 1 Samuel 17: 43 & 44 – “Am I a dog, that you come at me with sticks?”
And the Philistine cursed David by his gods.” “Come here,” he said, “and
I’ll give your flesh to the birds and the wild animals!”
8. How do We Overcome?
• The Emotional Goliath
• When David was facing the emotional Goliath, this is what he said “Can’t I even
Talk?”
• He didn’t give up on his idea to kill Goliath and made it a point that he is heard and
taken to the “Authoritative Goliath”
• Lesson: Crying/quitting in silence has helped nobody
9. How do We Overcome?
• The Authoritative Goliath
• What’s interesting is the fact that David didn’t reach the authoritative goliath ( the
big boss ) directly
• He had to get through smaller authoritative goliaths ( Your typical middle
managers who “want” to be in power )
• However he persevered and managed to convince the big boss, Saul finally said to
him “Go, and the LORD be with you”
• Lesson: Persevere and don’t give up!
10. How do We Overcome?
• The Able Goliath = The Challenge
• When Goliath hurled abuses and curses at David, he remembered the following:
– God’s promise in his life
– The reward of overcoming the challenge
• Lesson: Don’t look at the size/impossibility of the problem/task but the size of the
opportunity and the reward
11. Food for Thought
• Do you have the gift of Faith to overcome the Goliaths in your life?
OR
• Are you satisfied with little in life and are shying away from new challenges
due to Goliaths in your life?
• This is what Almighty God says “In all these things we are more than
conquerors through him who loved us” – Romans 8:37
