3. HISTORY
• Was invented in
December 1891 by
James Naismith in
Springfield,
Massachusetts.
• By 1897-1898, teams of
5 became standard and
the game spread
nationwide and to
Canada and other parts
of the world.
• 1934 – the first college
games were staged in
New York City’s
Madison Square
Garden.
• 1950s – basketball had
become a major college
sport, paving the way
for professional
basketball.

4. HISTORY
• 1949 – two subsequent
professional leagues,
the National Basketball
League (formed in
1937) and the
Basketball Association
of America (1946)
merged to create the
National Basketball
Association (NBA).
• 1959 – A Basketball Hall
of Fame was founded in
Springfield,
Massachusetts.

5. NATURE AND BACKGROUND OF BASKETBALL
BASKETBALL is a team sport where in the
objective is to shoot a ball through a basket
horizontally positioned to score points while
following a set of rules.
Usually two teams of five players play on a
marked rectangular court with a basket at each
width end.
Basketball is one of the world’s most popular
and widely viewed sports.

• A regulation hoop consists of a rim 18 inches in
diameter and 10 feet high mounted on a
backboard.
• A team can score a field goal by shooting the
ball through the basket during regular play.
• A field goal scores 2 points for the shooting team
if a player is touching or closer to the basket than
the three-point line, and 3 points if the player is
behind the three-point line.

7. NATURE AND BACKGROUND OF BASKETBALL
• The team with the most points at the end of the
game wins but additional overtime may be
issued when the game ends with a draw.
• Various violations are generally called “fouls”.
Disruptive physical contact (personal foul) is
penalized and a free throw is usually awarded
to an offensive player if he is fouled while
shooting the ball.

8. NATURE AND BACKGROUND OF BASKETBALL
• A technical foul may also be issued when certain
infractions occur, most commonly for
unsportsmanlike conduct on the part of the player
or coach. A technical foul gives the opposing team
a free throw and possession of the ball.
• It is a violation to move without dribbling the ball
(travelling), to carry it or to hold with both hands
then resume dribbling (double dribble).

9. BASIC SKILLS IN BASKETBALL
1. SHOOTING
– How to improve your
shooting skills:
• Remember BEEF (Balance,
Elbow, Elevate, Follow
Through) when shooting
the ball.
• Be relaxed and concentrate
on the basket.
• Know when you have a
good shot and then take it.
• Jump naturally
• Make sure you have an arc
on every shot
• Practice all of your shots.

2. DRIBBLING
• This move involves bouncing
the ball off the floor with
your hands as you cover the
floor.
• How is it done?
• Dribble the ball with hand
and use only the tips of your
fingers.
• Employ the wrist and the
forearm to push the ball
while covering the court.
• Dribble the ball on one side
of your body and not right in
front.
• While dribbling with one
hand, use the other hand to
drive your defender away
from the ball.

3. PASSING
– Is a skill that maximizes
the involvement of all
players in setting up a
play to earn successful
shots and earn points for
the team.
• TWO TYPES of PASSES:
• Air Pass
• Bounce Pass

12. BASIC SKILLS IN BASKETBALL
• Air Pass – travels
between the players
without hitting the
floor.
– Chest Pass
• Originates from the chest
to the receiver’s chest
level
– Overhead Pass
• Originates from the
forehead. Aim for the
teammate’s chin.

• Bounce Pass – is thrown
to the floor so that it
bounces to the
intended receiver.
– In executing the bounce
pass, calculate about 3/3
distance from the
receiver as the hitting
point so that the all
bounces right to your
receiver.

4. REBOUNDING
– The ability to jump with
power to gain possession
of the ball as it bounces
to the rim after a failed
shot before it touches
the floor.
– Whenever you grab a
rebound, your team
gains a chance to shoot
again while the other
team actually loses it.

5. RUNNING - one of the
basic skills that a
basketball player should
possess because in this
sport, speed defines the
best.

16. LEAD-UP GAMES
• Are simple games where the fundamentals
of more highly organized sports are
embodied.
• Are introduced to develop the skills used in
basketball.
• By learning the basic skills in these games,
the students will be able to grasp readily the
techniques of the highly organized games.

17. ARCH GOAL BALL
Skill: Passing, Catching, Shooting
• Relay formation, facing a basketball goal or any substitute,
each file has a basketball.
• At a signal, each leader passes the ball backward overhead,
the next player catches it and passes it in the same way and so
on to the end of the line.
• When the last player receives the ball, he runs forward and
tries to throw it into the basket, standing on a line marked
from five to ten feet from the goal.
• He is allowed but one throw, then he quickly takes his place at
the front of his file (which moves backward one place to make
room for him), and at once passes the ball backward
overhead.
• The last player in turn, runs forward, throws for goal etc.
• This is repeated until each player in a file has thrown for the
goal

18. BASKETBALL DRIBBLE RELAY
Skill: Dribbling
• Players stand in relay formation behind a
starting line; a parallel finish line is drawn at
a thirty-foot distance.
• The first player of each file has a basketball
and on signal dribbles it to a finish line and
back to the starting line where he hands the
ball to the next player who goes through a
similar course.
• The team finishing first wins.

19. BASKETBALL LADDER RUN
Skill: Throwing, Catching
• A line is drawn across one end of the court, behind which the players
are lined up in files of competitive teams.
• Ten feet in front of this starting line another line is drawn across the
court, at each five feet interval beyond it, until five lines have been
drawn resembling a grill or ladder.
• Behind the last line and facing his team stands a thrower for each
team holding a ball.
• At a signal, the first runner from each team runs forward into the first
space or line and receives the ball tossed by the thrower for each
team; runs into the second space and throws the ball back to the
thrower; runs into the third space and receives the ball again; then to
the fourth line, from which he passes the ball to the thrower and
returns immediately to the rear of his file which has moved up to the
starting line.
• He touches off the next player as he passes and the latter repeats the
throwing and catching.
• The team whose last player is first back to the starting line wins the
game.

20. BASKETBALL PASSING
Skill: Passing and Teamwork
• Five to twelve players may play on the team.
• The game is started by a toss up between two opposing players at
center.
• After the toss each attempts to secure the ball and pass it among its
own players trying to make as many consecutive passes as possible.
• Each team calls out the number of the pass each time a player
catches the ball.
• The team wins which in the course of the play made the greatest
number of consecutive passes.
• The total passes is not counted, merely the consecutive passes each
time the ball is in the possession of a team.
• When the ball is touched by an opponent the ball is considered as
leaving the possession of the team and the count starts over.
• The rules of basketball are applied to the handling of the ball.
• A pass is considered complete if a teammate catches it.

21. KORBBALL
Skill: Basic skills in basketball
• Two hoops or carton boxes are used as
baskets placed in opposite ends of a
basketball court.
• Eight or 10 make up each team. The object is
to shoot the ball into the basket on the
opponents side of the floor while trying to
prevent them from scoring themselves.

• DIVIDE the class into groups of 10-11
members
• CHOOSE A TEAM COLOR AND LEADER
– List the names on a piece of paper
• Study the instructions of the lead-up
games and strategize.
• Let the games BEGIN!!!!
