  1. 1. Game-Based Learning Angel Rivera
  2. 2. Game Based-Learning (GBL) is an approach where students are in control of their learning. The teacher is merely being a facilitator in the learning process. Additionally, it can solidify older content that students have already learned.
  3. 3. Benefits of GBL Increases A Child’s Mental Capacity Exercise referring to practicing the art of memorization. Children must utilize certain aspects of their memory in order to solve games. Some critical aspects utilize tracking narrative elements of a game, or memorizing critical sequences.
  4. 4. Benefits of GBL Computer & Stimulation Fluency Since we are living in a world where technology reigns, students will be learning key skills that will carry them into the future. Such skills at the primary grades are: how computers work, the use of a keyboard and mouse, username and passwords, and how to navigate the internet.
  5. 5. Benefits of GBL Helps With Fast Strategic Thinking & Problem Solving In general, games require children to make logical decisions. This skill will help them as they develop into adults because they are developing their ability to make logical decisions, and think outside of the box.
  6. 6. Benefits of GBL Develops Hand-Eye Coordination While looking at the actions on the screen, children are using their hands to control what is happening at the same time.
  7. 7. Benefits of GBL Beneficial Specifically For Children with Attention Disorders Many studies have concluded that online games have the potential to assist children with attention disorders.
  8. 8. Benefits of GBL Skill Building Many games have aspects that help children with specific skills. Some focus on typing, coding, and others focus on aspects of life that pertain to every day life. For example, many mystery games contain maps. In these games children practice map reading skills. Additionally, other games such as “SIMCITY,” focus on real life aspects such as managing finances.
  9. 9. Benefits of GBL Develops Hand-Eye Coordination While looking at the actions on the screen, children are using their hands to control what is happening at the same time.
  10. 10. Benefits of GBL ELL Games do not include words, so they are appropriate for students new to the English language.
  11. 11. Spatial Temporal Math (ST Math)  Created by MIND Research Institute  Boosts math comprehension  Directions/words are not incorporated in the program  Students encouraged to solve puzzles through the process of trial and error
  12. 12. Math Example: Spatial Temporal Math (ST Math)  Use of a asexual avatar Jiji  Teacher’s can tailor learning
  13. 13. Spatial Temporal Math (ST Math)  Proven results of this game-based program
  14. 14. Examples of Language Arts Games:  These tools helps students practice grammar, spelling, and punctuation
  15. 15. Examples of Science Games: BRAINPOP  Games used to reinforce skills used in Science on all levels k-12
  16. 16. Examples of Social Studies/History Games  Allows educators to bring history alive
  17. 17. Students Create! SCRATCH.COM  Students will have an edge on the competition  In the world where we live in today, more and more people are beginning to code computer programs  “As Naace have recently state 75% of all jobs in the UK requrie computer skills, this edge brought about having good ICT and programming skill IS LIKELY TO INCREASE over time..”
  18. 18. Students Create!  Coding has been a huge creative outlet where students create their own games using coding sites  Test each other on skills that are being taught in class, at the same time reinforcing their own skills
