Presentazione1 the eu symbols
1. THE EU is demostrated by a series of symbols:
-THE EUROPEAN ANTHEM ;
-THE EUROPEAN FLAG ;
-THE MOTTO: “ UNITED IN DIVERSITY”
2. THE EUROPEAN FLAG
The European flag is not only the symbol of the European Union but
also the unity and identity in general.
It consists of 12 gold stars arranged in a circle on a blue background.
The stars symbolize the ideals of unity , solidarity and harmony
among the peoples of Europe.
The number of stars does not depend on the number of member
countries.
It was created in 1955. The Council of Europe engaged in defending
human rights and promoting European culture, choose the design
still in use today.
3. THE EUROPEAN ANTHEM
The melody is taken from the Ninth Symphony, composed in 1823 by
Ludwig van Beethoven, who has set to music the Ode to Joy,
written by Friedrich Schiller in 1785.
The song symbolizes not only the EU, but also Europe in general. The
Ode to Joy expresses Schiller’s idealistic vision of developing a
bond of brotherhood among men, a vision Beethoven shared.
In 1972 the Council of Europe has adopted the theme of Beethoven’s
Hymn to Joy as its anthem. In 1985 it was adopted by Heads of
State and Government of member countries as the official anthem
of the freedom, peace and solidarity pursued by Europe.
The European anthem is not intended to replace the national
anthems of the member countries, but rather to celebrate the
values they share.
4. THE MOTTO OF THE EU
“ United in diversity “, the motto of the European Union, has been
used for the first time in 2000.
The motto means that, through the EU, the Europeans have
managed to work together for peace and prosperity, while
maintaining the richness of different cultures, traditions and
languages of the continent.
