Anthropology is the study of Humanity. It grew out of colonialism and its tradition is full of studies of people like the Azande who live in Northern Sudan. In the 1920s a chap called Evans Pritchard studied the Azande. The Azande believe in Witchcraft - witches attack at night and don’t even necessarily know that they are doing it. Typical Witch attacks are those that cause illnesses or deaths, or buildings falling down. So anthropology sought to understand explain beliefs like this. Evans-Pritchard takes the idea of Witchcraft more seriously than anyone had done before him. He wanted to show how the belief in witches made sense and was perfectly rational within the Zande world. He was among the earliest to criticise and discard the idea that there existed a specifically primitive, 'pre-logical' mentality. He entered into the system and sought to explain it as something that makes sense. He sought to understand rather than to explain away. Evans Pritchard concluded that the system worked to keep society in check. If I got ill Organisation continue to have this evolutionary belief. -photo taken in about 1880 by Richard Buchta -Live in Northern Sudan - now mainly christian, but in those days they mainly believed in a type of witchcraft. - Sounds silly but that was what made sense to them. They believed that when someones becomes ill its generally because a witch has cast a spell on someone. - anyway, the result is that taking people seriously results in deeper understanding. - anthropologists don’t really do any thing or try to change anything. - anthropological study Most Azande traditionally practiced a religion but this has been supplanted to large extent by Christianity. Their traditional beliefs revolve mostly around magic and witchcraft. Witchcraft is believed to be an inherited substance in the belly which lives a fairly autonomous life performing bad magic on the person's enemies. Witches can sometimes be unaware of their powers and can accidentally strike people to whom the witch wishes no evil. Because witchcraft is believed to always be present, there are several rituals connected to protection and cancelling of witchcraft that are performed almost daily Pritchard. When something out of the ordinary occurs, usually something bad, to an individual, they may blame witchcraft, just as others may say "bad luck". Oracles are a way of determining from where the suspected witchcraft is coming and they were for a long time the ultimate legal authority, the one setting the action as how to respond to the threats.
So its basically loitering -
Quantative study - they are good for proving or disproving points. For testing whether things work or not - for evaluation. But when you don’t have a solution, when you don’t know what you should be measuing, Qualitative research provides answers. Our research is exploratory: Exlains the context. Its richer. It does not claim to be representative.
what’s good about loitering? Actually it can be quite scary to find out what people think of your services and you can feel that people don’t actually want to listen to you.
