1. El pretérito: los verbos “I to Y”
Go through each slide of the PowerPoint,
filling in the notes on page 4 of your packet
as you go.
2. I to Y
• This stem change happens in any ER verbs that
have a vowel (a, e, i, o, u) before the ending
▫ Ejemplos: leer, caer, creer
• The exception to this rule is traer. This verb
has a different irregular ending: traj-
• The verb oír (to hear) also makes this change.
3. I to Y
• The yo, tú, and nosotros, and forms add an
accent to the i in their normal endings.
• The él/ella/Ud. ending changes from ió to yó
• The ellos/ellas/Uds. ending changes from
ieron to yeron.
4. That means that the endings to these
verbs should look like this:
-í -ímos
-íste X
-yó -yeron
5. Let’s look at an example:
leer (to read)
leí leímos
leíste X
leyó leyeron
