What is ART?
( Wikipedia)
ā€¢ Is a diverse range of human activities in creating
visual, auditory or performing artifacts, expressing
the authorā€™s imaginative or technical skill, intended
to be appreciated for their beauty or emotional
power.
ā€¢ Is a form of communication and means whatever it is
intended to mean by the artist.
Collins English Dictionary
defines 'the arts' as "imaginative, creative, and
nonscientific branches of knowledge considered
collectively, esp. as studied academically". The
singular term art is defined by the Irish Art
Encyclopedia as follows:
"Art is created when an artist creates a beautiful
object, or produces a stimulating experience
that is considered by his audience to have
artistic merit.
The meaning of the word Artā€¦
The word ART encompasses many meanings, including
ability, process and product.
ā€¢ Ability ā€“ The human capacity to make things of
beauty and things that stir us; skill, mastery and
creativity
ā€¢ Process ā€“ The different classifictions of art such as
drawing, painting, sculpting, architecture, music and
photography; methods or processes.
ā€¢ Product ā€“ The completed work;
Motivated functions of art
ā€¢ The purpose of art which are motivated refer to
intentional, conscious actions on the part of the artists or
creator.
1. Communication: Examples Illustrative arts such as
scientific illustration and maps. Emotions, moods and
feelings are also communicated.
2. Art as an entertainment.
- Art may seek to bring about a particular emotion or mood,
for the purpose of relaxing or entertaining the viewer
Example: Motion pictures and Video games..
3. The Avante-Garde.
- The art of political change.
- The art movements which had this goal-
Dadaism, Surrealism, Russian, Constructivism,
and Abstract Expressionism.
4. The art for psychological and healing
purposes.
- Is also used by art therapists, psychotherapists
and clinical psychologists as art therapy.
5. Art for social inquiry.
- Simply to criticize some aspect of society.
Ex: Graffiti art or street art ā€“ are graphics and images
that are spray-painted or stencilled on publicly
viewable walls, buildings, buses, trains, and bridges,
usually without permission.
6. Art for propaganda or commercialism.
- To subtly manipulate the viewer into a particular
emotional or psychological response toward a
particular idea or object
Non-motivated functions of art
- Are those which are integral to being human,
transcend the individual, or don not fulfill a specific
external purpose.
- Is something which humans must do by their very
nature and is therefore beyond utility.
1. Basic human instinct for harmony, balance, rhythm
2. Experience of the mysterious
3. Expression of the imagination
4. Universal communication
5. Ritualistic and symbolic functions
