This document summarizes the threat faced by an indigenous language in Mexico called Ayapan. The last two remaining fluent speakers of the language, who are elderly men in their 70s living in the same village, have stopped speaking to each other. As a result, the language is at risk of becoming extinct. While reports say the men had an argument, the head of the Mexican Institute for Indigenous Languages plays this down, saying the men simply drifted apart and now have little in common. The situation highlights the broader threat faced by over 20 indigenous languages in Mexico.
