Editor's Notes
You donāt have to pay this money back!
āShould I apply?ā The Request for Proposals or Funding Opportunities Announcement will tell you. It may say a certain number of years in the area of expertise are required, or that your organizational budget canāt be above or below a certain amount. If you donāt fit the eligibility, donāt apply. Itās possible that you can fit in the grant somewhere, just not as the lead organization. Required forms: do you have all of them together? Will it take time to get them? Is the amount that can be funded something that makes you say, āWell, every little bit helps,ā or does it make you panic because youāve never seen that many zeroes? Do you have 30 hours or more to meet the deadline?
Writing a winning proposal: If the RFP says āTimes new roman, 12 pt, double spaced, no longer than 15 pages,ā donāt do arial, 10 pt, single-spaced, 16 pages. Some might say, only the first 15 pages will be read; others might say, weāll throw it away. And they really should throw it away, because if you canāt follow directions regarding a simple page setup, what would make me think that you would do what youāre supposed to do hundreds of thousands of dollars? The project might cost more than whatās allowed, but tell in your budget what other funding sources youāre using to meet those costs.
Say it well ā¦ Weāll get to this a little more later, but this is where good record-keeping really comes in handy. Some grantors will say, you need to have increased the number of people served by 30% over 3 months in order to keep this money. But if you can show through percentages ways that youāve improved, it will be better.
The person who does the writing shouldnāt be the person who does the editing.
