  2. 2. • Slovakia has many heroes and important personalities. • We have selected some of the most famous and significant. • We also tried to draw some.

The personalities of Great Moravia Empire Svätopluk I • He was a very famous prince and the most important of the princes - rulers of the Great Moravian Empire. • He came from the Mojmír family. • During his reign he annexed large territories in Central Europe to Great Moravia and made bold attacks against the neighboring East Frankish Empire.

The personalities of Great Moravia Empire Rastislav  He ruled as the prince of Great Moravia before Svätopluk.  Rastislav invited Byzantine scholars and believers Constantine and Methodius to Great Moravia around 863.  Constantine created a script, Glagolitic, for the needs of the Slavic language.
  5. 5.  Both of them Constantine and Methodius became the founders of Slavic literature.  Their Old Slavonic became the fourth liturgical language of the Western Church.  Through the mission of Cyril and Methodius in Great Moravia, our ancestors gained invaluable wealth.

Juro Jánošík (1688 - 1713)  Juro Jánošík was a Slovak outlaw, the hero of the people in the 17th century.  Jánošík was born in 1688 and died in 1713.  His main motto was: Take from the rich and give to the poor.  People compared him to Robin Hood.  Jánošík is the main character of many Slovak novels, poems and films.

Juro Jánošík •He grew up in the village of Terchová in the Kingdom of Hungary in a beautiful mountainous region in the Malá Fatra Mountains. •He didn´t like the life of the poor in slavery and so he became the leader of a band of robbers in 1710. •They lived in the mountains and the poor supported and helped them. •He was said to have a miracle belt that protected him from bullets.

Arrest and Execution of Juro Jánošík • Jánošík was captured in the spring of 1713 in Klenovec (Klenóc). • According to the widespread legend, he was caught in a pub when he slipped on a loose pea thrown into the floor by a treacherous old lady. • Jánošík was imprisoned and judged in Liptovský Svätý Mikuláš. • He was sentenced to death. • The way of his execution became a part of various legends. • The hook was pierced on his left side and he hung on the gallows to die.

Ľudovít Štúr (1815 - 1856) • He was the most important representative of Slovakian national revival in the middle of the 19th century. • He codified standard Slovak language - orthography based on Central Slovak dialects. • He was also a politician, poet, journalist, publishers, teachers, philosophers, linguists and Member of the Hungarian Parliament.
  10. 10. Pavol Dobšinský (1828 - 1885) Completely, he published more than 150 Slovak legends and fairy tales, on which later generations of Slovak children grew up.
  11. 11. Pavol Országh Hviezdoslav (1849 - 1921) • He was the most important figure Slovak literature. • The competition in the recitation of poetry and prose in Slovak - Hviezdoslavov Kubín – was named to his honour. • It takes place every year in the spring.
  12. 12. Štefan Banič (1870-1941) • He was the inventor of the parachute. • In 1914 he designed a prototype of parachute, which he tested by jumping from a building in Washington in front of military officials and representatives of the patent office. • Banič's parachute was different from what we know today – it was a kind of umbrella attached directly to the human body.
  13. 13. Milan Rastislav Štefánik (1880-1919) • He was one of the important Slovaks, politician, diplomat, astronomer, military pilot. • He was responsible for the formation of a common state of Slovaks and Czechs. • In 1919 he was awarded by the Council of the Commander of the Legion of Honor for his scientific and diplomatic work. • After the war, he became the first Czechoslovak minister of the military.

Milan Rastislav Štefánik • The short and wonderful life of Milan Rastislav Štefánik ended tragically, with the crash of his plane on his return to his homeland in May 1919. • He was the hero of his time, a symbol of the fight for freedom. • He is buried in a mound on Bradle. • „To believe the truth, to live the truth and to defend the truth."
