3. ABSTRACT
BACKGROUND
Limited studies have evaluated the right ventricle systolic function in different categories
of heart failure despite its effect on outcomes. Hence, this study aimed to determine the
relationship of right ventricular dysfunction and ejection fraction in patients with heart
failure.
METHODS AND RESULTS
This is a single center, retrospective cross-sectional study that included 30 patients with
reduced ejection fraction. Left ventricular ejection fraction was obtained by 2D
echocardiography and right ventricular systolic function was assessed via tricuspid
annular plane systolic excursion (TAPSE), right ventricular fractional area change,
pulmonary arterial pressure and speckle-tracking strain of the right ventricular free wall.
The Pearson product moment correlation was used to reveal the relationship between
ejection fraction and these right ventricular parameters.
CONCLUSION
In summary, speckle-tracking strain of the right ventricular free wall have the strongest
significant correlation with ejection fraction. Right ventricular fractional area change has
moderate significant correlation with ejection fraction while tricuspid annular plane
systolic excursion (TAPSE) have weak correlation with ejection fraction. No relationship
was found between right ventricular size and pulmonary arterial pressure.
