  2. 90% of Americans who meet the medical criteria for drug or alcohol abuse or dependence started smoking, drinking, or using other drugs before age 18. (Adolescent Substance Use, CASA, 2011)23.5 million persons aged 12 and over (9.3% of persons aged 12 and older) needed treatment for an illicit drug or alcohol use problem. (National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 2009)11 million American adolescents and young adults ages 12-29 need help with drug and alcohol problems; nine million of these are between the ages of 12-25; and of those nine million; two million are ages 12-17. (2009 National Survey on Drug Use and Health)90% of the nearly two million adolescents who need help with drug and alcohol problems are not getting the help they need.
