Letter from the
President
The most recent message
from the District Governor in
his newsletter (reproduced
later in this bulletin)
highlights various activities
around the district, and our
club was mentioned 3 times!
Our Magnifying Microscopes
and Pride of Workmanship
Award were 2 of 5 vocational
projects mentioned, and our
club was acknowledged
again looking ahead to
supporting the Rotary
Foundation in November,
with out successful
Ambassadorial Scholarship
applicant coming under
Rotary Foundation activities.
I think we can be suitably
proud that although we have
relatively low participation in
our club, we are making a
substantial difference to the
lives of others, both locally
and internationally.
In the new calendar year, we
will be changing our meeting
format to enable greater
participation of all members
in the selection and planning
of all our projects and
activities. Your Directors will
soon be nominating which
meetings their committee will
“run”, and what they choose
to do for around 40 minutes
of that meeting will be up to
each committee.
Speaking of Directors, we still
have a vacancy for the
position of Club Service
Director. I would love to hear
from anyone willing to step
up and take on some extra
responsibility in the club.
Yours in Rotary service,
Simone
Last Week's
Meeting
Congratulations to Rob
Rohrlach, who was elected as
our President for 2011-12!
Our speaker was a familiar
face, Tony Munday, who
talked to us about his
vocation as a camera man,
mainly in the Asia, and his
association with the One-2-
One Charitable Trust
(formerly known as the
Cambodian Tooth Angel
Project) after wanting to do
something to help the terrible
dental problems he saw in
the people of Cambodia.
For the past two years Tony
has been working on
obtaining a bus for the
One-2-One organisation and
this has finally been brought
to fruition with the help of a

This Week's
Meeting
Our special guest this week
is Professor Jorg Imberger,
Director at the Centre for
Water Research and
Professor of Environmental
Engineering at UWA.
P ro f e s s o r I m b e rg e r
specialises in the sustainable
management of water bodies,
through understading the
motion and mixing in lakes,
estuaries and coastal seas in
response to both natural
forces such as tides,
meteorological surface
fluxes, river inflows and
outflows as well as
anthropogenic forcings such
as effluent buoyant jets,
bubble plumes and
mechanical mixes, the effect
of such motions and mixing
on ecological systems
residing in the water bodies.
His message about our
impact on climate change is
powerful – climate change
skeptics are encouraged to
hear Jorg present the data as
he sees it.
Professor Jorg Imberger is
not to be missed. His
presentation at the last
Rotary District Conference
was excellent. Please invite
friends and associates to the
meeting to hear him.

a lengthy association with
Rotary and has been
recognised with a Paul Harris

Pre-Halloween
Social Function
Please come along to the pre
Halloween Social Function at
Toni and Bill James home, 4
Archdeacon Street, Nedlands
at 7:00pm on Saturday, 30th
October.
It is important to support
social activities in a Rotary
Club as that is where we have
the opportunity to get to know
each other better, thus creating
stronger bonding and a closer
working relationship when it
comes to fundraising and
projects.
The brief fellowship time prior
to meetings is insufficient to
create these bonds so please
take every opportunity to get
to know fellow members and
friends of the club better.
Please bring a bottle of drink
and a dish to share. Toni
would be pleased if you would
contact her so that she can
coordinate the food.
From the Desk
of the District
Governor
Time is marching on as we
move through the month of
October, the Vocational Service
month, and approaching
November, The Rotary
Foundation Month.
Firstly, congratulations must
go to the Rotary Club of
Geraldton which celebrated its
60th anniversary on Saturday
16th October. Geraldton is one
of our very active Clubs and it
continues to undertake great
projects after 60 years.
Club visits are going well and
will be completed during the
first week of November. I have
been impressed with the
service projects Clubs are
engaged in and the time and
effort that our Rotarians give
to help others.
I would like to mention a few
of the many Vocational Service
projects that have been
progressed during this month.
Firstly, the Rotary Club of
Freshwater Bay has now
begun to promote its
Microscope project throughout
the State. The project was
launched earlier this year by
the Chief Scientist for WA,
Professor Lyn Beazley AO,
s u p p o r t e d b y t h e
WaterCorporation. The aim of
the project is to put
microscopes into every
Primary School in Western
Australia; Clubs are
encouraged to sponsor a
school. Microscopes,
emblazoned with the Rotary
Wheel, can be purchased
through the Rotary Club of
Freshwater Bay for
approximately $12.50 each.
A number of Clubs are also
involved in recognising
those in different callings
with vocational awards. The
Rotary Club of
East Perth
hosted the very
high profile
Policeman of
the Year award
a t t h e
B u r s w o o d
C o n v e n t i o n
complex on the
5th of October.
The award was
presented by
the Acting
Minister for
Police.
The Rotary
C l u b o f
Freshwater Bay
presented its
P r i d e o f
Workmanship
Award to Ali
Warne and
Chris Masure
from La Galette
de France
patisserie on
Broadway on
13th October.
The Rotary Club of Belmont
has its Legends Night coming

will recognise a young up and
coming apprentice jockey, an
apprentice cabinet maker and

Senior High School.
Also, the Rotary Clubs of
Mount Lawley and West Perth
are considering the
nominations received for the
Allied Health Professional of
the Year award to be presented
on 15th November.
With November, the Rotary
F o u n d a t i o n m o n t h ,
approaching, it is the right
time to remind Clubs that
there are opportunities to
become involved in Matching
Grant and District Simplified
Grant projects. Not all of our
District funds are yet
committed; there is still an
opportunity for your Club to
get involved in a project that
can attract either a matching
grant or a simplified grant.
Please contact the District
Foundation team to see what
can be achieved.
Our District has been keen to
get involved in Foundation
programmes as much as we
can so again this year , we
allocated a sizeable amount
from our District Designated
Funds to allow us to select an
Ambassadorial Scholar who
will commence his study year
in 2011. Of the four excellent
nominations received, the
successful candidate was
Justin Hewett who was
nominated by the Rotary Club
of Freshwater Bay. He hopes to
study at the Tsinghua
University in Beijing.
Our Group Study Exchange
team which will travel to
Germany in May / June 2011
was selected in early October.
The team leader is Franziska
Forrer from the Rotary Club of
Midland and the successful
team members were
nominated by the Rotary
Clubs of Kununurra, Corrigin,
Swan Valley and Mt Lawley.
Once again, the standard of
applicants for both the
position of Team Leader and
team member were excellent
so we can be confident of a
successful exchange.
We also need to think about
our contributions to The
Rotary Foundation at this
time. The progress being made
in the war on Polio is exciting,
but we need to keep up th e
effort. To do that we need to
keep the contributions to Polio
Plus flowing. With world Polio
Day being October 24th, we
should take this as a good
prompt to think about making
our donations for this year.
And, don't forget your
contributions, personal and
Club, to the Annual Programs
Fund from which the money
for all of our other Foundation
activities is sourced.
For a commitment of $US1,000
per year, an individual can
become a member of the Paul
Harris Society. Rotarians that
can afford to do so are asked
to consider this as an
opportunity to help the
wonderful humanitarian
programs of The Rotary
Foundation. You may even
wish to consider becoming a
"Centurion" by making a
personal donation to The
Rotary Foundation annually of
$AS100 only.
As a parting thought, there are
now only about 5 months to
go before Clubs will need to
submit their applications for a
Presidential Citation. If you
haven't already done so,
please think about progress on
your planned projects and
other service activities to make
sure you will be in a position
to make a successful
application.
In June This Year 100
Women Walked 100
Kilometres To Raise
$100,000 For The Small
Community Of Kununurra
In Western Australia
Authors: Deb Pearce and Jim Bailey,
Rotary Club of Kununurra
Published in Rotarian Life, October
2010
It Was 11 degrees at 5am on a
June morning when an excited
bunch of pink-shirted women
gathered at Celebrity Tree Park
in Kununurra, WA, to venture on
a four-day journey that would
build solidarity and further bind
an amazing community.
Twelve months earlier, on a
Rotary 4WD rally fundraiser, a
child was accidentally killed.
Kununurra rallied, as
communities do, to support her
family, and we became aware
that the Kununurra District
Hospital did not have a quiet
place or chapel for quiet
reflection and grief.
Over a few sunset drinks,
looking across the Carr Boyd
Range and inspired by the
pilgrimage of three local women
who had walked the ‘Camino de
Santiago’ path in Spain (all 800
kilometres of it), the 100 Women
Walk was born.
100 women would walk 100
kilometres to raise $100,000 for a
non-denominational chapel at
the hospital. The Rotary Club of
Kununurra took up the
challenge, local businesses
rallied with donations, local (and
some interstate) women quickly
found their $1000 sponsorship,
and the great walk began.
With the kind permission of
Carlton Hill Station, at 6.30am
they departed the station
gateway and headed along a
station track south towards the
Ord River. Supported by an
amazing crew of 20, and
powered on by the cackle of the
excited women all around them,
they made their way to House
Roof Hill (setting of the
homestead in Australia) for
morning tea and blister checks.
By mid-afternoon they were all
in camp. The dinner truck was
set up, the shower truck was set
up, the foot spa was set up, and
the bar was open!
The foot spa deserves a special
mention. Somewhat reminiscent
of a pig trough with a ball float
in it, and rigged up to a pump, it
provided much needed relief and
a spot of luxury in the glorious
Kimberley outback.
The sun rose on day two through
the beautiful boabs and it all
began again. Over the next three
days a song was written (by two
ladies who had not met before), a
poem was penned and new
friendships were formed as the
women limped, laughed,
listened, and learnt – about
ourselves and about friends,
both old and new. a few also
learnt that iPods are psychic and
can choose your mood – Bob
Seger’s ‘against the Wind’ was
highly appropriate as the south-
easterly wind pummelled
walkers along Carlton Hill Road,
and Pink’s ‘Cuz I Can’ hit the
spot too!
The stroll home was 28
kilometres along gravel roads
and the main irrigation channel,
finishing at the Kununurra golf
Club, where ‘100 women’
sprinted, cart-wheeled, hobbled,
limped and rode their hobby-
horses over the finish line.
Enormous satisfaction arises
from recognising that a
community the size of
Kununurra, a mere 6000, has
raised $126,000 in a little over six
months. The challenge now is to
raise the remainder of the money
for the chapel – estimated at
three to four times what has
already been raised. The
community has, quite literally,
put in the ‘hard yards’ and will
use this to leverage the rest.
This has been an amazing
journey for the Rotary Club of
Kununurra, which was on its
knees 18 months ago with only
eight people attending meetings.
The club now has 48 members
and the ability to stage such an
event as the 100 women walk.
