2. WHY ARE WE DOING THIS
PRESENTATION?
We decided to do this presentation because we are seeing an influx of people
with skills and a refusal of companies to hire those people with skills.
We think this situation is silly.
There are many opportunities in the industry.
Companies and employees need to change their paradigm.

3. WHAT IS DIGITAL FORENSICS?
Simple 4 Step Process
Preservation
Restoration
Analysis
Reporting
No more, no less.
The 2 most important aspects of this is ANALYSIS and REPORTING

4. DEGREE, CERTS…. WHO CARES?
Your mom. (That’s who cares)
Why?
Because digital forensics isn’t about tests.
It’s about process.
It’s about analysis.
It’s about articulation.
It’s about testimony.
(NONE of which you get from degrees and certs.)

5. WHY IS IT SO HARD TO FIND A
JOB IN THE FIELD?
People don’t know what digital forensics is.
The big companies paid BIG dollars for experts.
No one pays BIG dollars now.
Companies have TOO HIGH expectations
(because of how much they pay….)
Clients don’t want to spend money on digital forensics
(because they don’t understand it)

6. I REALLY WANT TO WORK IN
DIGITAL FORENSICS….
Great!
Just know that you’re going to have some hurdles….
Know that you are (probably) going to have to make up a role/position for
yourself.
Know that NO ONE ELSE really understands what you’re talking about.
Know that if you’re successful, you will be great.

7. STILL, I REALLY WANT TO BE
HERE….
Network like a lunatic
IMPORTANT NOTE:
Networking is NOT collecting business cards!!
Networking is meeting people and helping them first with
the understanding that someday… 6 weeks, 6 months, or 6
years from now, they MAY be in a position to help you.
TIP: After every networking event, ask yourself: “Who did I help today?”

8. WHAT ELSE CAN I DO?
Volunteer.
At current position, discuss digital forensics as part of the over-all data security solution.
Meet police chief at the local (small) town you live in. NOTE: PD’s in most major cities DO NOT NEED
your volunteer services and will not hire you. Go to the small towns, explain what you can do, why it could
be helpful and offer support if they ever need it.
Start a blog.
Post interesting articles, thoughts, or ideas.
Improve your skills in public speaking and analysis
(the 2 most important skills in digital forensics).

9. ANYTHING ELSE I CAN DO?
Update your LinkedIn profile. All the time.
Remember: This is not Facebook. FB is for friends. LinkedIn is for money.
Do NOT confuse them.
Be willing to work part-time, on contract, project only, and more for
opportunities.
There are opportunities in:
Law Firms, Accounting Firms, PI Firms, HR Firms, Law Enforcement, eDiscovery
Firms, Consulting Firms, Data Security Firms and more.

10. THAT’S IT?!?
Yep.
You need to be creative, be persistent, work hard, and be patient.
(No one will hire you if you’re too pushy. No one will hire you if you’re not assertive.)
Review your resume, update LinkedIn, start networking.
(No, you aren’t a good networker. How do I know? You don’t have the job you want.)
Write down your ideas for integrating DiFo into your existing role. Write out a draft letter
to your boss. Schedule a meeting with “the boss” to discuss. Use the letter as a guide.
DON’T give “the boss” the letter, have a discussion instead.
Call the local PD. Ask to meet with the Chief. Explain that you’d like to come in and help
out. You are looking to trade your time and skills for experience.
