Reported Speech

“I have lost my umbrella”
INDIRECTLY
She said (that) she had lost her umbrella
The first one is placed between inverted
commas and can be found in conversations in
books, plays or quotations.
Reported Speech
DIRECTLY
“I have lost my umbrella”
INDIRECTLY
She said (that) she had lost her umbrella
In the second one we explain what the speaker has
said, not repeating his / her exact words.
(THAT) can be ommited and we use some verbs as
SAY, TELL, EXPLAIN…to introduce our sentence
• She said, “My birthday party is tonight”
• She said that her birthday party was that night
Appart from verbs, 1st and 2nd pronouns and
possessive adjectives normally change
I ( HE / SHE ) “ I live in Paris” - She said that she lived in Paris
ME ( HIM/ HER)
MY( HIS/ HER)
MINE( HIS/ HER)
WE ( THEY …)
“ He loves me” - She said that he loved her

“ It is mine” - She said that is was his
“ We live in Paris” - They said that they lived in

• She said, “My birthday party is tonight”

possessive adjectives, expression times usually
change
TODAY (THAT DAY )

DAY
TOMORROW ( THE
PREVIOUS DAY)
YESTERDAY ( THE

THE PREVIOUS DAY
“she left YESTERDAY” - She said that she had left THE
NEXT DAY
“ I’m leaving NOW” - She said that she was leaving THEN
“ I love THIS book” - They said that she loved THAT book

You will use this structure in
• ORDERS / REQUEST

STATEMENTS
• When you repeat statements in an indirect way
you usually introduce your sentence with verbs
such as TOLD / SAY and the word THAT
(although it is optional)
• There are some rules you must understand
• You don’t usually repeat the situation in that
moment, you will repeat it in the future, so you
will talk about the past.
We are going to make a game.
Last week I gave you some papers with some
information about me
Now, you are going to tell everybody what did
I tell you
But be careful, you received the paper last
week so you can’t not use present or future
tenses
Let’s play … WHAT DID RACHEL
TELL YOU LAST WEEK ?
• Whatever you tell someone in a direct way
using the present tense is going to be told in
the past
• These are all present tenses (simple, perfect
or continuous but present tenses)
• Just think about the first tense you find….
– I LIVE in Paris
– She IS working hard today
– They HAVE bought a new house

• If they are in the present, change them into the
past tense ( SHE SAID that …)
– she LIVED in Paris
– She WAS working hard that day
– They HAD bought a new house
– She DIN’T LIKE that film
– They WERE not studying French then
DON’T FORGET
YOU MUST
CHANGE SOME
PRONOUNS AND
SOME TIME
EXPRESSIONS
• Whatever you tell someone in a direct way
using the past tense is going to be told in the
past participle form ( had + participle)

• Just think about the first tense you find….
– I LIVED in Paris last year
