Expert’s View regarding students’ engagement

The concept of student engagement is based on the constructivist
assumption that learning is influenced by how an individual participates
in educationally purposeful activities. Learning is seen as a ‘joint
proposition’… however, which also depends on institutions and staff
providing students with the conditions, opportunities and expectations
to become involved. However, individual learners are ultimately the
agents in discussions of engagement.

• Engagement to improve learning
Students – as individuals, and collectively summarised by Kuh
(2009a, 698):
• ...engagement increases the odds that any student –
educational and social background notwithstanding – will
attain his or her educational and personal objectives, acquire
the skills and competencies demanded by the challenges of
the twenty-first century, and enjoy the intellectual and
monetary advantages associated with the completion of the
baccalaureate degree.

Engagement Task
Engagement is active. It requires that
students be attentive as well as in
attendance; it requires the student to
be committed to the task and find
some inherent value in what he or she
is being asked to do. The engaged
student not only does the task
assigned but also does it with
enthusiasm and diligence.
The student performs the task
because he or she perceives the task
to be associated with a near-term end
that he or she values. (2001, 64)

• Australasian Survey of Student Engagement (AUSSE), which defines student
engagement as “students’ involvement with activities and conditions likely to
generate high-quality learning” (Coates, 2009), measured along six engagement
scales:
• —— academic challenge (extent to which expectations and assessments challenge
students to learn);
• —— active learning (students’ efforts to actively construct their knowledge);
• —— student and staff interactions (level and nature of students’ contact with
• teaching staff);
• —— enriching educational experiences (participation in broadening educational
activities);
• —— supportive learning environment (feelings of legitimating within the school
community);
• —— work-integrated learning (integration work experience into study).

Preparation
Preparing classes that actively engage students requires a lot of
planning
• Here are five steps teachers should follow:
• Thoroughly learn/understand the curriculum.
• Identify teaching objectives and strategies that engage students
and build understanding.
• Ask yourself these planning questions:
– What is the goal?
– What order does the teaching need to follow?
– What do the students already know?
– What do I want them to learn?

• Prepare the lecture or instruction of the concepts and skills,
based on your goals.

• Develop good habits (Classroom ideal rules)
• Strong positive relationship with students
• Parent involvement (personalize learning)
• Grades as good incentive
• Rewards and incentives(Should be used carefully)

• Intellectual engagement: Activity that appeals to students i.e.
assignment projects or Student may choose a relevant topic
or help students by the way students wish to present i.e.
paper, audio, video, ppt.
• Emotional engagement: Inquiring about student academic
and non-academic issues, giving him/her advice, and taking
an interest in her out-of-school life, personal passions, future
aspirations, and distinct learning challenges and needs.

• Behavioural engagement: Variation, novelty, and physical
activity can stimulate and improve learning i.e. clap three
times to raise hand, or class may break into small chunks or
move their seats in circle
• Physical engagement: “kinaesthetic learning” refers to the
use of physical motions and activities during the learning
process.

• Social engagement: Activity such as paired or grouped to
work collaboratively on projects, academic contests , as
debate teams, robotics clubs, and science fairs, learning
about societal problems, or participating actively in social
causes
• Cultural engagement: Activity such as Multicultural songs,
dances, and performances, while posters, flags, reduce the
feelings of confusion, alienation, disconnection, or exclusion
among different culture and weave into a thread of global
citizen.

Krause (2005, 12-14 ) ‘working principles’ to enhance student
engagement
Acknowledge the challenges: Let students know that we are
aware about some of the pressures they face.
Listen to students’ expectations:- Be responsive where
appropriate. (Do not be driven by unrealistic expectations.)
Make it a priority to get to know your students, their needs,
aspirations and motivations.

Krause (2005, 12-14 )
Assessment: Use assessment to shape the student experience
and encourage engagement
1. Use assessment in creative ways to bring peers together both
in and out of the classroom
2. Engage students in self-assessment and peer assessment so
that the focus is increasingly on their responsibility for
becoming and remaining engaged in the learning process.

We can conclude that engagement learning approach focuses on
(1) an emphasis on collaborative efforts,
(2) project-based assignments,
(3) non-academic focus.
It is suggested that these three methods result in learning that is
creative, meaningful, and authentic. we mean that all student
activities involve active cognitive processes such as creating,
problem-solving, reasoning, decision-making, and evaluation.
In addition, students are intrinsically motivated to learn due
to the meaningful nature of the learning environment and
