4. USE OF GOLD IN ANCIENT TIMES

5. PROGRESS
● In 19th century, a mixture of GOLD CHLORIDE &
SADIUM CHLORIDE,`Muriate of Gold & Soda`, Na[AuCl
4] was used to treat SYPHILLS.
● In 20th century, the GERMAN Bacteriologist ROBERT
KOCH, discovered that GOLD CYANIDE, K[Au(CN)2]
was bacteriostatic towards the tubercle bacillus.
● The element GOLD appears to slow the degradation of
Collagen and stimulate the growth of skin cells, making it
an ideal anti aging treatment.

 Gold is also highly resistant to Bacteria and can
be used to prevent the growth in dangerous
infections. So it can be used as artificial implants.

compounds, i.e Organogold compounds

►GOLD SODIUM THIOMALATE - injection, used to treat
active RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS, can cause serious
(sometimes fatal) side effects, including blood cell problems
(e.g., ANEMIA, low white blood cells/platelets), kidney
problems, RASH, ITCHING, or mouth sores/irritation (
stomatitis )

has further broadened the
potential of gold in biomedical
applications and it is exciting
to see the outcome of this
clinical trial, which suggests
that gold can act as an effective
and safe drug delivery system.

An anti-cancer drug,
loosely attached to gold
nanoparticles , starts
accumulating deep inside
tumors within minutes
of injection and can
be activated for an effective
treatment within two hours
whereas the same drug
Injected alone takes two days & it has no toxic effects
as after delivering the drug, the nano particles passes
through the Kidneys and clear the body within a week.

►The metaphorical gold
standard of medical
treatment might one
day turn out to be a
literal gold treatment.
By attaching the drug
to gold nanoparticles,
researchers hoped to
improve the drug's
binding power to HIV.
