HTML is a language for describing web pages.
HTML stands
for Hyper Text Markup Language
HTML is a markup language
A markup language is a set of markup tags
The tags describe document content

HTML markup tags are usually called HTML
tags
HTML tags are keywords (tag names)
surrounded by angle brackets like <html>
HTML tags normally come in pairs like <b>
and </b>
The first tag in a pair is the start tag, the
second tag is the end tag
The end tag is written like the start tag, with
a forward slash before the tag name
Start and end tags are also called opening
tags and closing tags

Tags can be written using upper or lowercase
letters.
We can assign specific attributes to each HTML
tag to customize its behavior, like
<P align=‘left’>.
HTML document are plain-text documents, so it
can use any text- editor to write HTML code.

HTML can be edited by using a professional
HTML editor like:
Adobe Dreamweaver
Microsoft Expression Web
CoffeeCuP HTML Editor
However, for learning HTML we recommend
a text editor like Notepad (PC) or
TextEdit(Mac). We believe using a simple
text editor is a good way to learn HTML.

HTML elements can have attributes
Attributes provide additional
information about an element
Attributes are always specified in the start
tag
Attributes come in name/value pairs
like: name="value"

tag. The align attribute is used to align the
paragraph.

right-click in the page and select
"View Source" (IE) or "View Page Source"
(Firefox), or similar for other browsers.
This will open a window containing the
HTML code of the page.
