  2. 2. Welcome to NaFFAA Region 8 Jose Pecho – Regional Chair Lorna Dietz - Regional Vice-Chair Jenab-I Pareja – Regional Youth Chair

Ninoy Aquino Movement <ul><li>Sponsored the 25th anniversary commemoration of Ninoy's assassination at the Veterans Memorial Building attended by more than 350 people. </li></ul><ul><li>- Held candlelight vigil and march in front of San Francisco’s City Hall </li></ul><ul><li>- Held a mass at St. Andrew's Church </li></ul><ul><li>- Raised $15,000 for a Ninoy Aquino –Gawad Kalinga Village in Concepcion, Tarlac </li></ul>
  4. 5. <ul><li>NAM is partnering with ABS-CBN, the Foundation for Worldwide People Power, Pinoy Today, Filipinas Magazine, San Francisco-Manila Sister City Committee (SFMSCC), Young Filipino Professional Association (YFPA), the Philippine Consulate, NaFFAA Region 8, Philippine American Press Club, USA, Fil-Am Council of San Francisco, and special guests. We hope you will join us in this momentous event. What: Candle Light VIGIL and MARCH with Documentary to follow Where: Gathering at the City Hall Steps (Civic Center Plaza) AND Veterans War Memorial Building (400 Van Ness Avenue) When: AUGUST 21 (Thursday) </li></ul><ul><li>Schedule: </li></ul><ul><li>6pm sharp! - Meet at the City Hall and prepare to march 6:30pm - 7pm - Outdoor Reception on the Balcony of the Green Room 7pm - 9:30pm - Official Program and Commemoration (Documentary &quot;Beyond the Conspiracy: 25 Years After the Aquino Assassination&quot; included) The Event is FREE and will be televised by ABS-CBN. Please wear something YELLOW at this event. (Tee shirts and pins celebrating Ninoy's life will also be on sale.) </li></ul>
  5. 6. Fighting for our Filipino American Veterans <ul><li>Rodel Rodis personally met with Sen. Feinstein in Washington DC in February 2008 and Speaker Pelosi in March 2008 to discuss Filipino Veterans Equity issue. </li></ul><ul><li>Rudy Asercion and Rodel Rodis went to Speaker Nancy Pelosi's Office in May 2008 to urge her to introduce S.1315 in the House. </li></ul><ul><li>Lobbied for &quot;unequivocal support&quot; for S.1315 </li></ul>

Desperate Housewives <ul><li>Organized community meetings at the Philippine Consulate to discuss the Desperate Housewives issue attended by 75 people including 12 Fil-Am doctors </li></ul><ul><li>Organized a picket of the Disney Store that had more than 50 people and was well covered by the mainstream and community media. </li></ul><ul><li>Participated in a national conference of Fil-Am doctors and concerned community groups in Las Vegas to address the DH issue and to form FALCON - the Filipino American Leadership Conference </li></ul>

Heroism (Kabayanihan) at the Local Level. <ul><li>Answering the Need to Honor and Inspire Community Kabayanihan. </li></ul><ul><li>For their heroism, individuals have been honored by the community. But there has been no vehicle for honoring entire groups or community organizations. </li></ul><ul><li>This is the need that we propose to meet with the Annual NaFFAA Kabayanihan Awards for Community Service. </li></ul>
  12. 15. <ul><li>The Kabayanihan Awards will honor community organizations – whether or not affiliated with NaFFAA – that have rendered outstanding and meaningful service to the community in the following fields or benefiting the following sectors: </li></ul><ul><li>Education </li></ul><ul><li>Youth </li></ul><ul><li>Senior Citizens </li></ul><ul><li>Women </li></ul><ul><li>Health </li></ul><ul><li>Immigration & Human Rights </li></ul><ul><li>Entrepreneurship </li></ul><ul><li>Arts & Culture </li></ul><ul><li>Aid to the Philippines </li></ul><ul><li>Civic Involvement </li></ul>

Kabayanihan Awards for Community Service <ul><li>An 11 th category, the Alex Esclamado Award for Advocacy, is for any organization that has advocated in a sustained and outstanding manner a cause or causes that have had a profound impact on the FilAm community or the American mainstream. </li></ul><ul><li>It is named after Alex Esclamado, the founder of NaFFAA and one of the most ardent advocates of the rights and interests of Filipino Americans and of the Philippines. For this, he was conferred the Legion of Honor by President Corazon Aquino and the Ellis Island Award on the occasion of the 250 th year of the founding of the United States. </li></ul>
