• How does the environment affect people?
• How do people affect the environment?
Modify – people change the environment
Ex. Flatten/cut through land to build roads
Adapt – people adjust to the environment
Ex. Climate affects clothing and housing
Depend – people need things from the environment
Ex. Fishing, farming, hunting
5. •Examples of how humans and the
environment affect each other:
• We depend on it: People depend on the Nile
River for water and transportation.
•We modify it: People modify our
environment by heating and cooling
buildings for comfort.
•We adapt to it: We adapt to the
environment by wearing clothing suitable
for summer (shorts) and winter (coats),
rain and shine.

•Look at the pictures that show different
examples of HEI.
•Rotate the pictures among the table groups.
•Complete the chart on the handout for each
picture.
Select which category the picture belongs in,
either depend, adapt or modify. Then explain
why you chose that category.

Human Environment Interaction
Human Environment Interaction is how the environment affects people and how people affect the
environment. It shows how people adapt to, modify, and depend on the environment.
Study the examples of Human Environment Interaction. Then, fill in the information on your chart.
8. Extension Task:
• Students look in the newspaper/magazines to find
examples of HEI. The class reviews the criteria for
acceptance as an example of human-environment
interactions - and which category does it fit in.
• Students now label three construction papers - with one
labeled ”Depend,” "Modify,” ”Adapt" Students then start
collecting and gluing examples to each of the categories.
• Enrichment
Have the students find examples of the other themes of
geography from the newspaper.
Students go to their neighborhood and draw examples they find
in their local areas.

•How to humans depend, adapt
and modify the environment?
Include both positive and
negative examples.
