BRITISH INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL - HANOI
NEWSLETTER
From Mr Anthony Rowlands - Principal of BIS Hanoi
The end of the school year, which is fast
approaching us, is often a time of great
celebration with regards to our fantastic
achievements throughout the year.
However, it is also a time tinged with
sadness as we say goodbye to some key
staff members.
This year, we are saying farewell to a small, but very
valued, number of staff and I would like to take this
opportunity to pay tribute to their great dedication to the
school.
Mrs. Karen Hanratty
Mrs. Hanratty joined us as Head of Primary in August 2012
when the school opened. She has led the Primary School
with passion and expertise. I worked with Mrs. Hanratty
whilst we were together at Harrow International School,
Bangkok and knew she would be a great leader for our
Primary school - I certainly have not been disappointed.
Mrs. Hanratty is returning to live in Italy for the foreseeable
future with her husband Peter.
Mr. Nick Bury
Mr. Bury also joined us in August 2012 when the school
opened and has been a very valued member of staff. He
spent the first two years teaching in Year 3 where he
proved to be very popular with the students. This year, he
has been teaching ICT throughout the Primary School and
has really relished this opportunity to teach each year
group. This was the first time that Mr. Bury has taught
children in Year 1 and Year 2 and he has enjoyed this new
challenge throughout the year! He will be returning to live
in the UK with his girlfriend, Liz.
Ms Katrina Marsden
Ms Marsden joined us in August 2013 and BIS Hanoi was
her first experience of teaching overseas. She has done a
wonderful job teaching English for us. In addition, she has
also contributed greatly to developing our support for
Community and Charity projects, both in Hanoi and in
more outlying districts. Ms Marsden is returning to the UK
with her fiancé, Peter, and she has already secured a
teaching position there.
Ms Carol Hawkins
Ms Hawkins joined us in January 2015 on a short-term
contract until we appointed a new Music teacher for
2015/16. Ms Hawkins has done a marvellous job in a very
short period of time and has added so much to the
development of the Music Department. We are very
grateful for the contribution made by Ms Hawkins and she
definitely leaves the Music department on a stronger
footing. Ms Hawkins will be returning to live in the UK
and France.
On behalf of the school community I would like convey
our best wishes to all our departing staff and good luck for
the future.
I do hope that you all have a most enjoyable weekend.

Mrs. Karen Hanratty Mr. Nick Bury Ms Katrina Marsden Ms Carol Hawkins
I don’t think there is ever a lull in a high
achieving international school but we have
had some more ‘ordinary’ activities over
the last few weeks as we have finished
IGCSE and A Level examinations and the
internal assessments. We have made up for
this in the last three weeks with a variety of
activities supplementing the great learning taking place in the
classroom.
Year 11 had a short expedition in and around Hanoi to
celebrate the finishing of their public examinations and
had a very enjoyable time on a number of activities. This
week is also Green Week and Secondary have joined
From Mr Christopher Short - Head of Secondary
Issue 34 3
Primary in a number of events to promote sustainable
living. It is important that all our focus weeks are not seen
as one week of action and then back to our old behaviour.
Sustainable living like Road Safety and the other foci
through the year is something we must live every day to
make a difference. Thank you to Ms Phillips for
organising the activities to fit in with our existing lessons
in Secondary.
Year 12 also finished their examinations this week so they
re-join us for the last two weeks of term to start their Year
13 studies and continue their university application
process. As mentioned last week, they sit their IELTS tests
on Saturday; we wish them well with this.
Over the past week the secondary students have
been learning about significant issues that affect
our planet. Green Week is an important
opportunity to evaluate our impact on the
environment and how we can improve our
habits. The students have participated in a range
of activities, for example KS3 life skills was focused on plastic
pollution and the effects that this has on the environment, Science
club students made paper and within KS3 Science lessons the
students were finding creative solutions to reducing waste. In
addition the students of the Community and Charity ECA were
visited by a fair trade ambassador who informed and inspired the
students about fair trade and its benefits to local communities in
Vietnam. Secondary Green Week concluded with an assembly
presented by a range of secondary subject ambassadors and the
students and staff were treated to some inspirational speeches from
Year 9 English literature students. Remember to Reduce, Reuse and
Recycle!

Science Teacher
GREEN WEEK IN SECONDARY
This week has been a very important week
in school. We have been busy with ‘Green
Week’, considering issues around the
environment and sustainability that are of
global importance. We have talked a great
deal about the 3 R’s – ‘Reduce, Reuse and
Recycle’. There has been a particular
focus in Primary on the use of paper, but children have talked
about and considered wider issues as well. You will read
more about the events of the week later in this newsletter. It
is interesting talking to the children, they already have a good
understanding of some of the issues and what we should do
– use both sides of a piece of paper, turn off lights and A/C
when leaving a room, turn off the tap while brushing your
teeth, etc. However, the challenge for them and for all of us –
and I include myself here – is to consistently put these things
into action. It is one thing to know what we should do,
another to make sure we do it!
Today parents of children in Primary will receive their
child/ren’s end of year report. These are detailed reports
which cover all aspects of the curriculum as well as a child’s
personal and social development. A lot of thought and work
goes into producing the reports and we hope you find them
helpful and insightful. Written reports can only ever give
parents a part of the picture, however. The teachers know
your child very well indeed, and could write a book about
each one and the progress they have made in their learning.
This of course, is not feasible! In order for you to get the
fullest picture possible of your child’s progress this year I
would urge you to take the opportunity to attend the parent
teacher consultations that are taking place next week. When
sitting talking face to face with your child’s teachers you will
From Ms Karen Hanratty - Head of Primary
Issue 34 4
find that the colour is added to the black and white picture
that the reports paint. Please contact the Primary office to
make an appointment if you have not already done so.
Please also make a note in your diary for the Primary
Summer Music Concert taking place next Friday, 19th
June,
at 11.30 am. I shall look forward to meeting you all next
week.
This is an apt saying for this article. Just one week out of an incredibly busy school
year, BIS holds Green Week – a chance to study and explore environmental issues,
and a chance to put into practice what we have learned.
This year our theme was ‘The 3 R’s – Reduce, Reuse and Recycle’. The Primary
School Council discussed this theme and chose a different focus for each year group
to study. Year 6 looked at, ‘How the 3 R’s can save the Earth’, Year 5 ‘Paper and
Pollution’, Year 4 ‘Creative Reusing’, Year 3, ‘The problems with plastic’, Year 2
‘Why trees are so important’, Year 1, ‘Why and how we should save trees’, with F1,
2 & 3 being led by their teacher to understand a bit more about what reduce, reuse
and recycle means. We also had a challenge to reduce the amount of paper we use in
school. There was a wealth of knowledge and understanding being developed, as
well as a lot of practice through the Primary School this past week.
But only for one week? Our hope is that the children in BIS will take on board these lessons, remember the things they
see and hear, think carefully about their actions every week of the year, and in time they will be the ones who cause
positive headlines about climate change to be in the news. Theirs could be the generation who turn environmental
concerns into environmental success stories. And in BIS it started with just one week out of the year – GREEN WEEK.

  • 2. From Mr Anthony Rowlands - Principal of BIS Hanoi The end of the school year, which is fast approaching us, is often a time of great celebration with regards to our fantastic achievements throughout the year. However, it is also a time tinged with sadness as we say goodbye to some key staff members. This year, we are saying farewell to a small, but very valued, number of staff and I would like to take this opportunity to pay tribute to their great dedication to the school. Mrs. Karen Hanratty Mrs. Hanratty joined us as Head of Primary in August 2012 when the school opened. She has led the Primary School with passion and expertise. I worked with Mrs. Hanratty whilst we were together at Harrow International School, Bangkok and knew she would be a great leader for our Primary school - I certainly have not been disappointed. Mrs. Hanratty is returning to live in Italy for the foreseeable future with her husband Peter. Mr. Nick Bury Mr. Bury also joined us in August 2012 when the school opened and has been a very valued member of staff. He spent the first two years teaching in Year 3 where he proved to be very popular with the students. This year, he has been teaching ICT throughout the Primary School and has really relished this opportunity to teach each year group. This was the first time that Mr. Bury has taught children in Year 1 and Year 2 and he has enjoyed this new challenge throughout the year! He will be returning to live in the UK with his girlfriend, Liz. Ms Katrina Marsden Ms Marsden joined us in August 2013 and BIS Hanoi was her first experience of teaching overseas. She has done a wonderful job teaching English for us. In addition, she has also contributed greatly to developing our support for Community and Charity projects, both in Hanoi and in more outlying districts. Ms Marsden is returning to the UK with her fiancé, Peter, and she has already secured a teaching position there. Ms Carol Hawkins Ms Hawkins joined us in January 2015 on a short-term contract until we appointed a new Music teacher for 2015/16. Ms Hawkins has done a marvellous job in a very short period of time and has added so much to the development of the Music Department. We are very grateful for the contribution made by Ms Hawkins and she definitely leaves the Music department on a stronger footing. Ms Hawkins will be returning to live in the UK and France. On behalf of the school community I would like convey our best wishes to all our departing staff and good luck for the future. I do hope that you all have a most enjoyable weekend. • 3. I don’t think there is ever a lull in a high achieving international school but we have had some more ‘ordinary’ activities over the last few weeks as we have finished IGCSE and A Level examinations and the internal assessments. We have made up for this in the last three weeks with a variety of activities supplementing the great learning taking place in the classroom. Year 11 had a short expedition in and around Hanoi to celebrate the finishing of their public examinations and had a very enjoyable time on a number of activities. This week is also Green Week and Secondary have joined From Mr Christopher Short - Head of Secondary Issue 34 3 Primary in a number of events to promote sustainable living. It is important that all our focus weeks are not seen as one week of action and then back to our old behaviour. Sustainable living like Road Safety and the other foci through the year is something we must live every day to make a difference. Thank you to Ms Phillips for organising the activities to fit in with our existing lessons in Secondary. Year 12 also finished their examinations this week so they re-join us for the last two weeks of term to start their Year 13 studies and continue their university application process. As mentioned last week, they sit their IELTS tests on Saturday; we wish them well with this. Over the past week the secondary students have been learning about significant issues that affect our planet. Green Week is an important opportunity to evaluate our impact on the environment and how we can improve our habits. The students have participated in a range of activities, for example KS3 life skills was focused on plastic pollution and the effects that this has on the environment, Science club students made paper and within KS3 Science lessons the students were finding creative solutions to reducing waste. In addition the students of the Community and Charity ECA were visited by a fair trade ambassador who informed and inspired the students about fair trade and its benefits to local communities in Vietnam. Secondary Green Week concluded with an assembly presented by a range of secondary subject ambassadors and the students and staff were treated to some inspirational speeches from Year 9 English literature students. Remember to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle! Ms Kate Phillips Science Teacher GREEN WEEK IN SECONDARY
  • 4. This week has been a very important week in school. We have been busy with ‘Green Week’, considering issues around the environment and sustainability that are of global importance. We have talked a great deal about the 3 R’s – ‘Reduce, Reuse and Recycle’. There has been a particular focus in Primary on the use of paper, but children have talked about and considered wider issues as well. You will read more about the events of the week later in this newsletter. It is interesting talking to the children, they already have a good understanding of some of the issues and what we should do – use both sides of a piece of paper, turn off lights and A/C when leaving a room, turn off the tap while brushing your teeth, etc. However, the challenge for them and for all of us – and I include myself here – is to consistently put these things into action. It is one thing to know what we should do, another to make sure we do it! Today parents of children in Primary will receive their child/ren’s end of year report. These are detailed reports which cover all aspects of the curriculum as well as a child’s personal and social development. A lot of thought and work goes into producing the reports and we hope you find them helpful and insightful. Written reports can only ever give parents a part of the picture, however. The teachers know your child very well indeed, and could write a book about each one and the progress they have made in their learning. This of course, is not feasible! In order for you to get the fullest picture possible of your child’s progress this year I would urge you to take the opportunity to attend the parent teacher consultations that are taking place next week. When sitting talking face to face with your child’s teachers you will From Ms Karen Hanratty - Head of Primary Issue 34 4 find that the colour is added to the black and white picture that the reports paint. Please contact the Primary office to make an appointment if you have not already done so. Please also make a note in your diary for the Primary Summer Music Concert taking place next Friday, 19th June, at 11.30 am. I shall look forward to meeting you all next week.
  • 5. This is an apt saying for this article. Just one week out of an incredibly busy school year, BIS holds Green Week – a chance to study and explore environmental issues, and a chance to put into practice what we have learned. This year our theme was ‘The 3 R’s – Reduce, Reuse and Recycle’. The Primary School Council discussed this theme and chose a different focus for each year group to study. Year 6 looked at, ‘How the 3 R’s can save the Earth’, Year 5 ‘Paper and Pollution’, Year 4 ‘Creative Reusing’, Year 3, ‘The problems with plastic’, Year 2 ‘Why trees are so important’, Year 1, ‘Why and how we should save trees’, with F1, 2 & 3 being led by their teacher to understand a bit more about what reduce, reuse and recycle means. We also had a challenge to reduce the amount of paper we use in school. There was a wealth of knowledge and understanding being developed, as well as a lot of practice through the Primary School this past week. But only for one week? Our hope is that the children in BIS will take on board these lessons, remember the things they see and hear, think carefully about their actions every week of the year, and in time they will be the ones who cause positive headlines about climate change to be in the news. Theirs could be the generation who turn environmental concerns into environmental success stories. And in BIS it started with just one week out of the year – GREEN WEEK.
