HYUNDAI

                          http://www.hyundaiusa.com/
The Hyundai Motor Company is one if not the most dynamic automobile
producer in any developing country. This is remarkable considering that the
company is closing in on 40 years of existence. To outline its history one must
also look into the life and times of its founder Chung Ju-Yung. It cannot be told
without the outlining the founders rise from the rice fields of Korea to the
circumstances that let him to acquire the knowledge and determination that led
to the creation of one of the fastest growing family owned businesses into a
global competitor. His creation of numerous companies eventually let to the
establishment of the Hyundai Group. The Hyundai Motor Company was one of
these. He created it and transformed it from a mere assembler of Ford models to
a designer and exporter of its own cars and engines in less than four decades. It
has already become a major global player with plants and dealerships that span
six continents. The company is one of the largest and most diversified business
organizations with 45 affiliated domestic companies and 254 overseas
companies in nearly 200 countries. The Hyundai Motor Company is but one
which the Group is active in such as shipbuilding, steel, petrochemicals, heavy
machinery, aerospace, electronics and financial services. These pages therefore
outlines not only the rich and unique History of the Hyundai Motor Company but
also the remarkable years beforehand that led to its creation, the eventual
breakup of the Group and its continuous development into a top ten global
automaker.

SSANG YONG

                        http://www.ssangyonggb.co.uk/
Yet another automobile manufacturer to come out of South Korea, SsangYong
was one of the later players to join the game when compared to other
companies that started back in 30s and 40s. The original name for SsangYong
Motor Company was Ha Dong-hwan it started out back in 1954 by building jeeps
for the American army.
In 1966 the company started exporting buses to Brunei, then in 1967 to
Vietnam. Apart from buses, they also started making hard and soft top jeeps, as
well as a variety of special purpose vehicles.

GM Daewoo Auto & Technology (GM Daewoo or GMDAT) was first established as
National Motor in 1937 in Bupyeong-gu, Incheon, South Korea. After changing
its name to Saenara Motor in 1962, Saenara Motor was bought by Shinjin
Industrial in 1965, which changed its name to Shinjin Motor after establishing
collaborations with Toyota. After Toyota's withdrawal in 1972, Shinjin Motor
started a joint venture with General Motors under the name General Motors
Korea, but was renamed again in 1976 to Saehan Motor.

Brief History of Honda It all began some 58 years ago. Soichiro Honda, whose
dream was to bring reliable and low cost motor cycles to the masses started to
build motor cycles to solve transport issues of the locals. This marked the
beginning of the world’s most successful motorcycle manufacturing venture.
Today Honda is the world’s largest manufacturer of Honda Motor cycle and the
3rd larges car manufacturer in the world. The Honda Company which once
started off as a small venture of manufacturing small motorcycles have now
grown into a giant manufacturing corporation with diversified products.
Products of the Honda Company include motorcycles, cars, power tools and

MAZDA

                            http://www.mazda.com/
Rei Yoshimara, a world-renowned corporate image-creator, designed the Mazda
logo. The 'V' represents wings outstretched.
The rotary engine was invented by a German named Felix Wankel in 1957.
About 40 years before its invention, 17-year-old Wankel had an improbable
dream in the summer of 1919 which led to the idea of the rotary engine. In the
dream, he went to a concert in his own handmade car. He even remembers
boasting to his friends in the dream; "my car has a new type of engine: a
half-turbine half-reciprocated engine. I invented it!" When he woke up in the
morning, he was convinced that the dream was a premonition of the birth of a
new type of gasoline engine. At the time, he had no fundamental knowledge
about internal combustion engines, but he intuitively believed that an engine
could achieve four strokes--intake,compression, combustion, and
exhaust--while rotating. This intuition actually triggered the birth of the rotary
engine, which had been attempted countless times by people all over the world
since the 16th century. The rotary engine, which converts rotary motion directly
into driving force, has an almost perfectly smooth operation; it also meets the
most stringent technical standards. This dream and intuition went on to steer
his entire life.

TOYOTA

                            http://www.toyota.com/

The Toyota logo is comprised of three ellipses, representing the heart of the
customer, the heart of the product, and the ever expanding technological
advancements and opportunities that lie ahead. Another interpretation is that it
represents the three interlocking aspects of the culture of the company -

                                       7
Car logos and brief introduce www.autodvdgps.com
freedom, team spirit, and progress. Also, in Japanese 'Toyo' means an
abundance of, and 'ta' is rice. In some Asian cultures, those blessed with an
abundance of rice are believe to be blessed with great wealth.

The official Toyota history is, like that of most companies, fairly glossy and
bare-bones. An article by Konrad Schreier, printed in the Complete Book of
Toyota (a bit of a misnomer since the book is mainly a bunch of reprints of
gushing, “no criticism allowed” car reviews), brings up a large number of
missing pieces - as does The Standard Catalog of Imported Cars.

SUZUKI

                            http://www.suzuki.com/
Suzuki Motor Co. Ltd., now one of the big four, started over sixty years ago in
Japan making spinning looms. Branching out into the motorcycle market, they
have again branched out into cars, vans, trucks, outboard motors and many
other types of manufacturing.
But it is motorcycles that Suzuki is best known for, and their arrival on the
motorcycle market started in June 1952, with a little machine, called the "Power
Free", a 36cc single-cylinder two-stroke. It had an unprecedented feature which
was the double-sprocket gear system, which enabled the rider to pedal with the
engine assisting, pedal without engine assist, or disconnect the pedals and run
with engine power alone. The system was so ingenious, the Patent Office
granted Suzuki a financial subsidy to continue research into motorcycle
engineering.

was one of the few Mazdas to be given a name. It is known just as the MX-5 in
Oceania and Europe and the Eunos Roadster or simply Roadster in Japan. It was
initially unveiled at the Chicago Auto Show on 10 February 1989. The Miata is
the world's best-selling sports car, with 720,407 cars produced and sold
between February 1989 and March 31, 2005. Beginning with the
third-generation 2006 model, Mazda consolidated worldwide marketing using
the MX-5 name, though enthusiasts in the U.S.A. steadfastly refer to it as a
Miata, a name that means "reward" in Old High German.

ISUZU

                              http://www.isuzu.com/
As one of the oldest companies in the Japanese automotive industry, Isuzu
traces its beginnings to 1916, the year Tokyo Ishikawajima Shipbuilding and
Engineering Co. and Tokyo Gas and Electric Industrial Co. initiated plans for
automobile production. In 1922, Japan's first domestically produced truck, a
Wolseley model A-9, was completed. In 1934, after meeting Ministry of Trade
and Industry standards, vehicles were renamed 'Isuzu' after the Isuzu River in
the Ise Shrine area. This is the origin of the company name, which was changed
to today's 'Isuzu Motors Limited' in 1949.
After World War II, development and production of trucks occurred at a feverish
pace.
Isuzu trucks were needed to carry all kinds of products and foodstuffs, and they
played a major role in reconstruction after the war. Isuzu's passion for trucks is
firmly rooted in this period. Since that time, an endless variety of models from
light-duty to heavy-duty trucks and buses have rolled off the Isuzu production
lines, with each vehicle being put to hard use in support of economic growth.

MITSUBISHI

                   http://www.mitsubishi.com/e/index.html
Some believe that the Mitsubishi logo represents a ship's propellers (Mitsuibishi
was involved in shipbuilding early in the company's existence). However, a
more commonly accepted explanation is that the logo is formed by the joining of
two family emblems and does not represent any part of a ship. Alistair Forsyth
emailed me with further information regarding the Mitsuibishi logo. He was told
by a Japanese-born woman that it simply means 'three diamonds'. He adds,
mitsu is baby talk for three and hishi is diamond. Like some other languages,
Japanese has rules about how words sound. In this case mitsuHishi sounds too
weak so it changes to Mitsubishi.
Mitsubishi Motors automotive tradition goes back to 1917 when the Mitsubishi
Model A, Japans first series-production automobile, was introduced. Over the
next two decades the company established themselves as an innovator,
developing, amongst others, Japans first diesel engine, its first large-sized bus
(the start of the world famous Fuso commercial vehicle series), its first
four-wheel drive passenger car prototype, and its first diesel-powered truck.

NISSAN

                            http://www.nissan.com/
Nissan is made up of a richly diverse group of people, as reflected in the
company's leadership team and the numerous corporate outreach programs in
which they participate in the community. If number-crunching is what is needed,
they've got that kind of behind-the-scenes information, too. Together, they have

what it takes to build cars and trucks with the power to change both the way you
view the world and the way you move in it.

INFINITI

                             http://www.infiniti.com
The Infiniti logo is derived from the symbol for infinity, not surprisingly. The
concept of the open road and traveling toward infinity was one the company
wanted the customer to feel. The logo also suggest Mt. Fuji.
Infiniti cars is the luxury car division of Nissan. The division was launched in
November 1989 and has changed the world of luxury cars since then. Initially,
the Infinity car was introduced only to the American public. Today, however, it is
sold in countless countries across the world and is a hot pick amidst various car
lovers.

ACURA

                            http://www.acura.com/
1986 was a watershed year for the automobile industry. This was when Honda,
one of the world's leading automobile manufacturers, introduced a division that
would exclusively manufacture luxury cars. This enterprise, the result of ten
years of research, was named Acura. Automobile luxury has never been the
same ever since. This was the first ever luxury automobile from Japan. Through
its introductory models, the Legend and the Integra that were sold and serviced
through 60 dealerships spread across North America and 18 states in the US,
Acura brand had heralded the arrival of a pioneering brand. Acura's history

makes interesting reading, because it is a history of success and innovation.

LEXUS

                            http://www.lexus.com/
Established in the early 1980s and launched in 1989, the Lexus marque soon
became associated with quality, luxury and superior customer satisfaction. The
brand reputation grew quickly until, barely a dozen years after its founding,
Lexus became America's best-selling line of luxury motor vehicles.
Lexus belongs to the global Toyota family, whose members together constitute
the world's third-leading automaker.

TOMMY KAIRA

                          http://www.tommykaira.com
Tommy Kaira began its true activity in the automotive world in 1987 when it
unveiled a tuned Mercedes-Benz 190E which was conveniently renamed as
"Tommy Kaira M19". Coincidentally, the first ever tuned cars by Tommy Kaira
were not manufactured by a Japanese company but rather by a European one:
this led to the birth of the aforementioned M19 and the M30E (based on the
Mercedes-Benz 300E). Nevertheless, from 1988 onwards Tommy Kaira began to
exclusively work on automobiles made in Japan, establishing along past years
successful contracts with giant manufacturers Nissan and Subaru. Historically,
Tommy Kaira has focused its efforts in providing extensive mechanical and
visual improvements to mainly four cars: Nissan Skyline, Nissan March, Subaru
Impreza and Subaru Legacy. In 1988, the company tuned for the first time a
Nissan Skyline R31 (rebranded as Tommy Kaira M30), in 1993 the turn was for

the Subaru Impreza (M20b) and the Nissan March (m13) and, finally, in 1994
the first Subaru Legacy Wagon (M20tb) received attention from the
Kyoto-based company.

HINO

                              http://www.hino.com
The company's complete history goes back to 1920 when Tokyo Gas Industry
Co., Ltd. established. Three years later, its name changes to Tokyo Gas and
Electric Industry Co., Ltd. and in 1918, mass production of motor vehicles starts
in Japan. In 1937, the Automobile Division of Tokyo Gas and Electric Industry
Co., Ltd., Automobile Industry Co., Ltd. and Kyodo Kokusan K.K. are
consolidated into Tokyo Automobile Industry Co., Ltd. In 1941, the name
changes to Diesel Motor Industry Co., Ltd.
The first the Hino name surfaced was in 1942 when a plant separated from
Diesel Motor Industry Co., Ltd. to become Hino Heavy Industry Co., Ltd. The
same year, the production of military track-laying vehicles started.
One year later, the production and marketing of heavy-duty trailer-trucks,
buses and diesel engines commenced and the name was changed to Hino
Industry Co., Ltd.

SUBARU

                            http://www.subaru.com/
"SUBARU" is a Japanese word meaning "unite," as well as a term identifying a
cluster of six stars which the Greeks called the Pleiades -- part of the Taurus

                                       13

constellation. According to Greek mythology, Atlas' daughters turned into this
group of stars.
Subaru started out as "The Aircraft Research Laboratory" in 1917 by Chikuhei
Nakajima. Then in 1931, the company was reorganized as "Nakajima Aircraft
Co., Ltd", designer of the infamous Zero fighter. The new corporation adopted
the "Subaru" cluster of stars as its official logo for its line of automobiles.

CROWN

                            http://www.crown.com/
From its humble beginnings in 1947, Crown International has grown to become
one of the world's largest and most respected manufacturers of power
amplifiers and microphones for professional audio markets.
Crown’s history traces back to 1947 and an Elkhart, Indiana minister named
Clarence C. Moore (1904-1979). Moore, a longtime radio enthusiast, had spent
the early part of the ’40s in Quito, Ecuador working for HCJB, a non-profit
Christian broadcasting and engineering group.
Following his return to the United States, he felt the desire to supply Christian
broadcasters like HCJB with quality electronic products. As a result, Moore
founded International Radio and Electronics Corporation (IREC) in 1947 and
converted a former chicken coop into the budding manufacturer’s first
production facility.
The company’s early reputation was built on a family of rugged and compact
open-reel tape recorders designed to operate reliably when used by
missionaries in remote, often-primitive regions of the world. After modifying
and distributing several existing models (Magnecord, Recordio, Pentron and
Crestwood) for the first couple of years, Moore obtained a patent in 1949 for a
groundbreaking invention: the world’s first tape recorder with a built-in power
amplifier (15 watts).

DAIHATSU

                           http://www.daihatsu.com/
Although its roots can be traced back to 1907, the Daihatsu brand name was not
used until 1951. After producing three-wheelers, Daihatsu built its first four
wheelers in 1958. Even from the start, the company, now part of Toyota, has
specialized in small-capacity passengers cars and four-wheel-drive off-roaders.
In 1966 the Compagno had the distinction of being the first Japanese car to be
imported, very briefly, into the UK.

ALFA ROMEO

                            http://www.alfaromeo.com
The Alfa Romeo logo represents the coat of arms of the city of Milan and are
related to the crusades, hence the cross. On the right, a snake is eating a figure,
either a child or a Saracen (depends on who you ask).
The Alfa Romeo story really begins in 1906, when the 'Societa Italiana
Automobili Darracq' - a car company founded by Alexandre Darracq (a
Frenchman and noted pioneer of automobile construction) decides to build a car
factory in southern Italy to produce low cost, affordable cars. Despite such
noble intentions the Darracq company’s fortunes soon flounder - chiefly as a
result of the once buoyant early 20th century car market slowing down. It
doesn’t help matters, that Darracq’s vehicles are also universally regarded as
being much too fragile and underpowered ...and thus never likely to prove
popular with Italian drivers! So in 1910, the Darracq factory, built in the
industrial suburb of Portello near Milan, is sold to a group of local car enthusiasts
and investors who call themselves the 'Anonima Lomarda Fabbrica
Automobili' …or ALFA for short.

                              http://www.ferrari.com
Enzo Ferrari was born in Modena Italy on February 18 1898. He came from a
well to do family that owned a metal foundry making railroad parts, they were
the first in his town to own a car. When WWI came Enzo’s father and brother
(Dino) were drafted into the Italian army, whom both died from influenza in
1916. Enzo was forced to leave school to run the foundry, when the business
collapsed he started work as a metalworker at the Modena Fire Brigade
workshop in order to support his widowed mother. Enzo himself was later
drafted into the Italian army where he worked shoeing mules for the mountain
artillery, after a few months he becomming seriously ill and was released from
the military. Not interested in going back to shcool and against his mothers will,
he found work as a test driver in Turin in late 1918. Enzo then moved to Milan to
work at CMN (Costruzioni Maccaniche Nazionali) as a racing car driver. His first
real race came in the 1919, the Parma-Berceto, he then entered the Targa Florio
that same year.

Carlo, their first son, was born in 1881, Bindo in 1883 and Alfieri in 1885. At just
a few months old, Alfieri sadly passed away and his parents decided to name
their next son, born in 1887, after him. They were to have three more children:
in 1890 Mario was born, followed by Ettore in 1894 and Ernesto in 1898.
All of the Maseratis were involved in the engineering, design, and construction
of cars, except for Mario, who was a painter and is presumed to have invented
the company trademark, the trident, borrowed from the statue of Neptune in
the square of the same name in Bologna.
The first of the brothers to become involved with engines was Carlo, who worked
in a bicycle factory in Affori, near Milan. He designed a single-cylinder engine for
a velocipede, which was later manufactured by the Marquis Carcano di Anzano
del Parco. Carlo Maserati also raced on Carcano bikes equipped with the engine
he had designed, winning a few races and setting a speed record of 50 km/h (31
mph) in 1900.

LANCIA

                             http://www.lancia.com
The origin of the Lancia logo is uncertain. If you know anything about it, please
email us!
Lancia & Co. was established in the year 1906 in Turin, Italy.
Vincenzo Lancia founded his firm in cooperation with his friend and colleague
Claudio Fogolin. Vincenzo Lancia and Claudio Fogolin both worked as
technicians and racing car (test) driver at the Fiat motor company.
The first Lancia prototype was damaged completely by a fire in the factory so
the first Lancia automobile was presented a year later; in 1908.
The first Lancia was the "tipo 51" which was named Alpha (The "A" in the Greek
alphabet). In the following decades Lancia would be naming lots of cars with
capitals out of the Greek alphabet. The Lancia Alpha was fitted with a cleverly
constructed small four cylinder engine with a capacity of 58 bhp. Those days an
enormous capacity!

BERTONE

                             http://www.bertone.it/
Marcello Gandini was born in 1938. His father was an orchestra conductor. He
began as an independent interior and exterior designer and then replaced
Giugiaro at Bertone in 1965. He served the the "maestro" for 15 years. The
Lamborghini Miura, Espada and Countach were all his design (and as a
free-lancer, the Diablo too). The Miura was the first work of Gandini at Bertone.
Since the McLaren F1 was introduced we're now accustomed to the sight of
road-going racecars but back in the '60s it was quite unique.
Lamborghini was a young sportscar maker: their first model was completed in
1963. They were very daring when proposed a V-12 mid-engined
super-sportscar. But the Miura, thanks to its sensational look and clever
solutions became one of the classics. It was premiered at the 1966 Geneva
Autoshow the: monocoque frame, doors swinging up front and rear, V-12
middle-engine, pumping out 325 bhp and ultra-low body. There was one
problem: Lamborghini haven't counted on the runaway success! It took a few
months to fully gear up the Miura production.

BUGATTI

Ettore Bugatti was born into an artist's family, in Milan, Italy, on September 15th,
1881. His father, Carlo Bugatti, was a famous sculptor and respected artistic
carpenter in his own right. His furniture creations, which were marked by Arabic
influences, were prized well beyond the borders of Italy.
After finishing school, and a short stay at the Academy of Art, in Milan, Ettore
Bugatti began his training at the bicycle manufacturer Prinetti and Stucchi.

Young Bugatti was especially fascinated by the technology and mechanics of the
automobile, which had only been recently invented. At age 17, Ettore equipped
a tricycle with a motor, and soon thereafter followed it with another tricycle
driven by twin DeDion motors. Just prior to the end of the century, Ettore
Bugatti took part in a race with his first vehicle.
In 1901, Ettore Bugatti presented his first self-made automobile at the
international exhibition in Milan. He built the vehicle with the help of the Gulinelli
brothers, and was awarded the 'T2' prize by the French Automobile Club for its
construction. Following some initial difficulties, the license for the production
rights of the vehicle to the de Dietrich company, located in Niederbronn in the
Alsace region. Because Ettore had not yet reached the legal age of 21, his father
had to sign the contract with de Dietrich. In the following years, Ettore Bugatti
developed five further vehicle models for the Deutz company in Cologne.
The de Dietrich company was not satisfied with the amount of time Ettore spent
developing and constructing racing cars, while, inthe company's opinion,
neglecting series production. His contract with de Dietrich was therefore
terminated. Ettore Bugatti went to work for Emil Mathis, and designed a new
automobile with a four-cylinder engine.

FIAT

In 1982, the Uno was the first Fiat to wear the new five-bar logo. Legend has it
that Fiat design lead Mario Maioli was driving past the factory at night during a
power outage, and saw the giant Fiat logo against the fading sky. He sketched
what he saw; the spaces between the letters represents the light he could see
between the letters of the sign.
Fiat has held a leading role in the automotive industry since its inception in 1899,
at the dawn of Italian industrialization. From the moment they first appeared on
the market, Fiat products, today ranging well beyond automobiles, have been
extensively developed and recognized worldwide. Its logo has become a great
status symbol due to a history of the superior cars the Company produces and
the prestige of its history and tradition.

founded "Abarth & C." company, based at 9, via Don Minzoni, Bologna. The
company's emblem was chosen to be the scorpion, Carlo's zodiac sign. On the

On the 10th April 1950 Tazio Nuvolari won the "Palermo-Monte Pellegrino"

Scorpion in the world of motor-racing. Carlo, however, as a good entrepreneur,
knew the importance of car production: in 1950 he sold over 1000 exhaust

CHEROKEE

Much in the same way that American automakers had downsized many of their
cars in the previous decade, Jeep downsized one of its nameplates, the
Cherokee, for 1984.
Prior to this year, the Cherokee moniker was attached to what amounted to a
sportier version of Jeep's Wagoneer. Mostly unchanged since its debut in the
early 1960s, the Wagoneer was a large, truck-based, four-door wagon with
four-wheel drive.
The former Cherokee, introduced as a 1974, shared most everything with the
Wagoneer, including dimensions and engine selections.

JEEP-EAGLE

                              http://www.jeep.com
Failing automakers Hudson and Nash merged their fortunes to become
American Motors Corporation, hoping that they could reap some economies of
scale. Eventually, due to slow sales for their overweight cars, they were bought
by Renault, partly to increase Renault's sales in the US. Renault's attempt failed,
and Chrysler, under "buy and sell" Iaccoca, bought AMC.
Iaccoca, for unknown reasons, dropped the AMC name, replacing it with Eagle -
after a heavy 4x4 compact car - in 1988; the brand was dropped in 1998.
Chrysler was contractually obligated to sell Renaults after buying AMC, leading
to the AMC Premier (renamed Eagle Premier in mid-1988). Built in Bramalea
(Ontario), it was the roomiest car in its class and quite aerodynamic. Its 3 liter,
European, MPI V-6 and four-speed automatic were reportedly quite nice to drive,
with 150 hp @ 5,000 rpm and 171 lb-ft of torque at 3,600 rpm.
Sales were slow, partly because Eagle dealers were selling odds and ends:
leftover AMCs, the Renault/AMC hybrid, the odd Mitsubishi, an LH (each

CHEVROLET

Popular legend has it that the Chevrolet logo was inspired by wallpaper in a
French hotel where William C. Durant was staying (the legend says he saw the
pattern marching off into infinity as a design on the wallpaper and tore a piece
of it off to keep to show to friends and later turn into the company logo).
However, his wife says that the bowtie emblem was first seen by her husband in
a Virginia newspaper on a vacation around 1912, upon which he told her that
the thought it'd be a very good emblem for the Chevrolet (per Chevrolet Pro
Management Magazine, October 1986).

company's image suffered. To fight this, GM launched a new brand of cars,

the one that carried the astronauts to the moon in the 60s.

An interesting fact is represented by the number who started out this company:
99 people from all backgrounds: design, production, marketing etc. known from
that day on as “the 99”. OK, they started out as 100, but one of them dropped

the Japanese ones in order to put up a fight on the American market. Such
strategies included better quality control which translated into better reliability
of the finished product and more control for the workers in the plant.

in the summer of 1947. This was followed by a further 48 examples that were
built for trials and appraisal. The Land Rover was launched in April 1948 at the
Amsterdam motor show, it was originally designed as a short term project to
keep the Rover car company busy until the depressed post - war car market
started to pick up.
In common with the Land Rover's that followed, the Series I had a box section
steel chassis, and aluminium bodywork. This was due to the rationing of steel,
and the abundance of aircraft aluminium. Many thousands of the Series I's can
still be seen on the roads today. Some are still in original condition, many have
undergone restoration, and others can be seen heavily modified at off - road
events.

AUSTIN

                             http://www.mini.co.uk/
In 1913 Herbert Austin decided to start making trucks. The first example being
in the 2-3 ton range. This venture was short lived; having produced about 2,000
in total, Austin decided to concentrate on cars.
At the end of the First World War all Government contracts were cancelled,
leaving Austin with 20,000 employees and little work. The factory returned
mainly back to producing cars, with the Austin 20 been the first vehicle to be put
into production.

LEYLAND

                        http://www.ashokleyland.com/

A new company, the Lancashire Steam Motor Company was formed with rented
premises in Herbert Street, sufficient to accommodate the workforce of around
twenty. By the end of 1896 the first steam vehicle was produced, and by 1899
the first passenger carrying vehicles were offered for sale. The first Leyland bus
is believed to have been delivered to the Dundee Motor Omnibus Co in 1900.In
1902, with sales of buses rising and the workforce numbering in excess of 150,

the Company moved to larger premises in Hough Lane.By 1906 the Company
had built its own engine and began to market it. It has been suggested that the
close collaboration with Crossley Motors resulted in the improvements
necessary. The first recorded demonstration bus was also built in this year.
Bodied by Milnes-Voss it seated 40 and had a forward spiralling staircase that
extended over the engine.

MOGAN

                       http://www.morgan-motor.co.uk/
The Morgan is a motor industry phenomenon. In a small town in Malvern,
Worcester, England, there is a factory run by Peter Morgan and his son, Charles,
where the Morgan 4/4, +8 and +4 are still built. They, and the workforce of just
under 100, lovingly produce about ten of the hand-built, ash-framed cars per
week while the waiting list continues to grow. At last count it was four years long
or more.
Peter took over from his father, HFS Morgan, who built a three-wheeled car, with
the world's first independent front suspension, in 1909. Friends and
acquaintances all wanted one, and in 1912 the Morgan Motor Company was
founded.

                           GERMANY
BMW

                             http://www.bmw.com

BMW stands for Bayerische Motoren Werke or Bavarian Motor Company. The
company was established in 1913 and based in Munich, Germany. It started out
as an aero engine manufacturer, hence the company logo. The logo comprised
of four quadrants of alternating white and blue color. It is a stylized
representation of an airplane propeller spinning against the clear blue sky. The
logo represents a white propeller blade against a blue sky. It reflects the origins
of BMW as a maker of military aircraft engines during WWI. Also, white and blue
are the traditional colors of Bavaria.
BMW AG originated with three other manufacturing companies, Rapp
Motorenwerke and Bayerische Flugzeugwerke (BFw) in Bavaria, and
Fahrzeugfabrik Eisenach in Thuringia. Aircraft engine manufacturer Rapp
Motorenwerke became Bayerische Motorenwerke in 1916 when the board of
directors fired founder Karl Rapp and changed the company name. The engine
manufacturer, which built proprietary industrial engines after World War I, was
then bought by the owner of BFw who then merged BFw into BMW and moved
the engine works onto BFw's premises. BFw's motorcycle sideline was improved
upon by BMW and became an integral part of their business.
BMW became an automobile manufacturer in 1929 when it purchased
Fahrzeugfabrik Eisenach, which, at the time, built Austin Sevens under licence
under the Dixi marque. BMW's team of engineers progressively developed their
cars from small Seven-based cars into six-cylinder luxury cars and, in 1936,
began production of the BMW 328 sports car.

VOLKSWAGEN

                                http://www.vw.com

The Volkswagen logo is simple, but the name has an interesting meaning - in
German, it translates as the "Peoples' Car"
In September 1998, VOLKSWAGEN AG established a humanitarian fund on
behalf of the forced labourers compelled to work at Volkswagen during the
Second World War. By the end of 2001 more than 2,050 people in 26 countries
had received humanitarian aid from the fund. Furthermore, a Memorial in
remembrance of the forced labour employed at the Volkswagenwerk plant is
currently being established at Wolfsburg, involving contributions from
present-day Volkswagen apprentices.

PORSCHE

                            http://www.porsche.com/
The Porsche badge is the coat of arms of the city of Stuttgart (where the cars
are built). The city was built on the site of a stud farm, which explains the horse
in the coat of arms; the antlers and red and black stripes are part of the arms of
the Kingdom of Wurttemberg.
Ferdinand Porsche designs the legendary Mercedes Compressor Sports Car, in
1923. The following year, the 2-litre racecar developed under his aegis wins the
Targa Florio. The Mercedes-Benz S-Type models dominate international
motorsport from 1927.
For years of hard work, in 1948, the 356 is the first sports car to bear the
Porsche name. ‘No. 1’ is roadcertified in June. Only one month later, the
lightweight mid-engine roadster wins its first class victory at the Innsbruck
Stadtrennen.

AUDI

                             http://www.audi.com/
The four rings in the Audi logo represent the four companies of the Auto-Union
consortium of 1932 - DKW, Horch, Wanderer, and Audi. The Audi name (latin for
"Hear!") disappeared after WWII, but was revived in1965.
The Audi history begins with a man called August Horch, who founded the
Company HORCH & CO in 1899.He invented his first car 1901 with the help of 15
fellow workers. The car had a max. speed of 32 km/h. In 1909 Mr. Horch had to
leave his company due to major problems with the commercial management
and founded another company called Audi. " Audi" is the Latin translation for
"Horch" and he took that name because he wanted to build cars under his own
name. So the brand "AUDI Automobilwerke GmbH" was registered in 1910.

MERCEDES-BENZ

                             http://www.mbusa.com/
The Mercedes-Benz logo is one of the most famous brands in the world. The
Benz logo is a simplistic three-pointed star that represents its domination of the
land, the sea, and the air. The famous three-pointed star was designed by
Gottlieb Daimler to show the ability of his motors for land, air and sea-usage. It
was first seen on a Daimler in 1909, and was combined with the Benz laurel
wreath in 1926 to signify the union of the two firms. Mercedes-Benz is the
world's oldestautomobile manufacturer. The first Mercedes-Benz car is 770
Grosser, made in 1930-1937.

DAIMLER

                           http://www.daimler.com

Gottlieb Daimler was born in Schorndorf/Wurttemberg on the 17th March 1834.
His name has become ever associated with the invention of the car engine. In
1887, Daimler purchased a small factory so he could produce and sell the engine.
This two-cylinder V-engine had an output of 1.5KW (2hp) Gottlieb Daimler died
on 6th March 1900.
Fredrick Simms an Englishman born in Hamburg, was on the lookout for a power
source to use in his 'Aerial Flights' (overhead railcar) and befriended Daimler,
who at that time was using his new engine in motorboats. Simms saw the
potential for marketing this engine in Britain. He took up the patent rights and
formed a company in 1893 called 'The Daimler Motor Syndicate Ltd'.

OPEL

                             http://www.opel.com/
The Opel automobile family traces its roots to 1838 in the town of Rüsselsheim,
Germany and the birth of Adam Opel. As a young adult, Adam Opel toured
Europe extensively and learned to make sewing machines while in Paris.
Fascinated by these machines, Adam Opel, then only 25 years old, opened a
factory in Rüsselsheim for volume production of sewing machines.
In 1868, Adam Opel married Sophie Marie Scheller and began a family which
would include five sons: Carl, Wilhelm, Heinrich, Friedrich and Ludwig, all of
whom would be involved in the family business. In 1885, Adam Opel expanded
production to sell fully assembled bicycles in Germany.

When Adam Opel died in 1895, the company was making 2,000 bicycles a year
and was leading Europe in sewing machine sales. With the encouragement of
their mother, the Opel brothers decided to move into the fledgling automobile
industry and would produce their first motorcars in 1899.

CITROEN

                          http://www.citroen.com/
The Citroen car company was founded by Andre Citroen, who got started in the
industry by building gear wheels. The two chevrons of their logo is meant to
represent gear teeth.
In 1919, Citroen started building motor cars at his Javel works. He employed
hitherto unknown (in Europe) mass production techniques borrowed from
Henry Ford in the USA and within a year was manufacturing 100 cars per day.

RENAULT

                           http://www.renault.com/
The Renault diamond logo was first used in 1924 (it was previously circular),
and had a very functional purpose originally - the center of the badge was cut
out to allow sound from the horn, positioned directly behind, to escape. Louis
Renault and his brothers founded their company in 1898. They quickly made a
name for themselves in motor racing notching up a string of wins with their
voiturettes. The Renault factories adopted mass production techniques in 1905
and Taylorism in 1913. During the first world war, the company turned out
trucks, stretchers, ambulances, shells and even the famous FT17 tanks that
made a decisive contribution to the final victory.

PEUGEOT

                            http://www.peugeot.com
One of the earliest Peugeot models was built in the city of Belfort, whose
emblem was the lion. The car was thus known as a Lion-Peugeot, and adopted
the Belfort city emblem.
Peugeot has been manufacturing cars since 1889. The Peugeot company was
officially founded in 1810 when the Peugeot family bought a cereal mill at Sous
Cratet and set about capitalising on the Industrial Revolution by converting it
into a steel factory.

The very first Venturi, the brainchild of Claude Poiraud and Gérard Godfroy’s
combined genius, was unveiled at the Paris Motor Show. The goal was to present
the only “Grand Tourisme” French car, while retaining it’s light weight of 850kg
for a cylinder capacity of two litres. The headquarters of the company were
located in the Pays de Loire in Coueron (44) where almost 700 cars were
produced in 20 years.

The 'V' represents wings outstretched. The rotary engine was invented by a German named Felix Wankel in 1957. About 40 years before its invention, 17-year-old Wankel had an improbable dream in the summer of 1919 which led to the idea of the rotary engine. In the dream, he went to a concert in his own handmade car. He even remembers boasting to his friends in the dream; "my car has a new type of engine: a half-turbine half-reciprocated engine. I invented it!" When he woke up in the morning, he was convinced that the dream was a premonition of the birth of a new type of gasoline engine. At the time, he had no fundamental knowledge about internal combustion engines, but he intuitively believed that an engine could achieve four strokes--intake,compression, combustion, and exhaust--while rotating. This intuition actually triggered the birth of the rotary engine, which had been attempted countless times by people all over the world since the 16th century. The rotary engine, which converts rotary motion directly into driving force, has an almost perfectly smooth operation; it also meets the most stringent technical standards. This dream and intuition went on to steer his entire life. It had an unprecedented feature which was the double-sprocket gear system, which enabled the rider to pedal with the engine assisting, pedal without engine assist, or disconnect the pedals and run with engine power alone. The system was so ingenious, the Patent Office granted Suzuki a financial subsidy to continue research into motorcycle engineering. ISUZU http://www.isuzu.com/ As one of the oldest companies in the Japanese automotive industry, Isuzu traces its beginnings to 1916, the year Tokyo Ishikawajima Shipbuilding and Engineering Co. and Tokyo Gas and Electric Industrial Co. initiated plans for automobile production. In 1922, Japan's first domestically produced truck, a Wolseley model A-9, was completed. In 1934, after meeting Ministry of Trade and Industry standards, vehicles were renamed 'Isuzu' after the Isuzu River in the Ise Shrine area. This is the origin of the company name, which was changed to today's 'Isuzu Motors Limited' in 1949. After World War II, development and production of trucks occurred at a feverish pace. Isuzu trucks were needed to carry all kinds of products and foodstuffs, and they played a major role in reconstruction after the war. Isuzu's passion for trucks is firmly rooted in this period. Since that time, an endless variety of models from light-duty to heavy-duty trucks and buses have rolled off the Isuzu production lines, with each vehicle being put to hard use in support of economic growth. 9

He adds, mitsu is baby talk for three and hishi is diamond. Like some other languages, Japanese has rules about how words sound. In this case mitsuHishi sounds too weak so it changes to Mitsubishi. CROWN http://www.crown.com/ From its humble beginnings in 1947, Crown International has grown to become one of the world's largest and most respected manufacturers of power amplifiers and microphones for professional audio markets. Moore, a longtime radio enthusiast, had spent the early part of the ’40s in Quito, Ecuador working for HCJB, a non-profit Christian broadcasting and engineering group. Following his return to the United States, he felt the desire to supply Christian broadcasters like HCJB with quality electronic products. As a result, Moore founded International Radio and Electronics Corporation (IREC) in 1947 and converted a former chicken coop into the budding manufacturer’s first production facility. Despite such noble intentions the Darracq company’s fortunes soon flounder - chiefly as a result of the once buoyant early 20th century car market slowing down.
