  1. Take a break… HALF WAY
  2. So how many of you have barred access in your organization to these kinds of sites? Facebook? You Tube? Twitter?
  3. Well, this is very fresh data, and nearly half of companies are concerned about staff usage of social sites from work, mostly with time wasting, but in the case of YouTube with bandwidth, and inappropriate material, and general misuse.
  4. So, the title of this presentation is “Collaboration and Enterprise 2.0 - work-meets-play or the future of business?“ and here we would seem to have the answer already - on slide 12! In fact, some would say “It already has“
  5. And yes, 60% find things easier to find on the web than on their internal systems, but actually, people aren’t really expecting to use the same tools for work as they do at home, and email isn’t really about to be taken over by social media messaging (despite what Gartner say, although they were talking about 2014!) , and most people are very wary of exposing their personal details. Apologies for some of the double negatives here….
  6. Definitely depends on what age group you ask.And most people think there is a risk to confidentiality, of over-investment of time, poor separation between social and work, and time-wasting during working hours. Now I’m not trying to say this stuff isn’t going to become more and more important. What I’m showing is that there is a big resistance to change, and that some of the issues on personal social networking have created a negative effect as regards persuading people about business social networking. There is a very wide separation out there right now, as we move from the evangelist phase to the early adopters. This is something we have particularly seen in our surveys over the last 3 years.
  7. So I think we need to be clearer when we are talking about External social networking and Web 2.0, which are largely about marketing and market communication, and Internal Enterprise 2.0 which is much more about sharing knowledge and collaborating, and also communication between staff, and between management and staff. And also between your immediate partners, suppliers and existing customers.
  8. For most executives, social media is scary. But so was email when it first came out Especially as most executives are a bit older, and they see what their children are doing on Facebook and Twitter and they go Woahh! Why would I want to be doing that inside my business?
  9. Having made that differentiation, many companies in our survey consider both to be quite important to their business.
  10. All of these are potential uses of external social media. As I’ve said, most are about Marketing, in it’s widest sense of both communicating to the customer base and listening to it. But as a knowledge resource its important – even things like Trip Advisor have value to travelling staff. Now just to say in passing that there are also some great applications that put otherwise labour-intensive business processes out there on the web. Making use of crowd-sourcing and ideas-sourcing, customer self-service portals, and customer-provided support forums and FAQs. There are lots of people out there in the world who’ll do work for you for very little reward as an alternative to watching daytime TV.
  11. This is an application I got from AndrewGilboy of Oracle. Explain: the Guardian newspaper forced the government to release scanned images of all of the expense claims of UK Members of Parliament under Freedom of Information rules. The Guardian knew that there was some really bad stuff going on, but there were nearly half a million of these forms. So they asked readers to go take a look at the forms for their local MP, and they uncovered some really whacky claims, and enough truly corrupt ones to put 3 MPs into court.
  12. Now the primary concept of Web 2.0 is “user contributed content” and when we bring that inside the organization, what we’re trying to achieve is better shared knowledge, team collaboration, and project coordination using websites as repositories for project documents and comments. We also see the idea of an electronic version of the company notice board, and some of the traditional functions of the printed staff newsletter. But all of these other things have useful possibilities ………….
  13. So, lets dig a little deeper into Collaboration. I rather like this quote from George Bernard Shaw, the author.
  14. Now here’s an interesting thing. If you open SAP or GreatPlains or Oracle Apps these days, you’re likely to be looking at a collaboration interface before you dig into the transactional stuff This is a GreatPlains mash-up with SharePoint. But where’s that going to put all the documents and stuff?....
  15. If you take nothing else away from this presentation, go back to your base and create an acceptable staff use policy for Facebook, U-Tube and Twitter. As a minimum it needs to say “Staff contributions to non-official sites are their personal responsibility and do not reflect corporate views or attitudes”
  16. So yesterday we launched AIIM 2.0, and the first application in the new beefed up Buyer’s Guide – with star rating style user feedback – is Enterprise 2.0.
