To understand what a map shows, one must examine the title, compass rose, and map scale. Maps can use absolute locations like addresses and coordinates, or relative locations describing one place in relation to another familiar place. Geographers use different types of maps for various jobs and purposes, such as climate maps showing average weather patterns, population density maps showing people per area, political maps delineating country borders, and physical maps depicting natural landscapes. Religious and language maps help geographers study the spread and effects of culture.
