Description
IN CONFLICT: IRAQ WAR VETERANS SPEAK OUT ON DUTY, LOSS, AND THE FIGHT TO STAY ALIVE is a
bold collection of personal stories from more than two dozen Iraq War veterans from different military branches
who candidly share their experiences of the war and how it has forever changed them. Yvonne Latty, a reporter
for The Philadelphia Daily News, listened to the stories of extraordinary sacrifice as she interviewed the veterans
at their homes, bases, and veterans’ hospitals. Their gripping stories take readers directly to the center of the
Iraq war and then back home to America where the veterans deal with the war’s aftermath in their lives.
IN CONFLICT includes first-person accounts from foot soldiers, sergeants, helicopter pilots, medics, reservists,

and an army Chaplin assistant, providing one of the most unique and broad perspectives on the war today. The
veterans come from all over the country and are of differing ages, races, and economic backgrounds, illustrating
the mosaic of the military and how no community or ethnic group has been left untouched by this war. We learn
about the intimate details of the veterans’ lives, their reasons for being in service ranging from harsh financial
need to pure patriotism, their personal struggles including facing racism and being gay in the military, and their
often changing views on the war. Each story is brought to life with individual snapshots of the veterans while they
were in Iraq, adding a very personal and intimate feeling to the book.
Following the success of the author’s first book, WE WERE THERE: VOICES OF AFRICAN AMERICAN
VETERANS, FROM WORLD WAR II to The WAR IN IRAQ, IN CONFLICT provides honest, gut-wrenching
voices while educating people about what is truly happening in Iraq. The book offers a rare glimpse into the lives
and hearts of the veterans who truly know the toll this war has taken on themselves, their families, friends,
communities, and the Iraqi people.
