The difference between Dermatitis and Tinea?
Dear Yahoo Answers Community,

My name is Ellenor. Just recently I was admitted to hospital, and while I was there, I was
sharing a bathroom with a variety of other patients. And then all of a sudden one day, my feet
became really itchy.

Although there are no signs of swelling, it is just the tips of my feet and hands are constantly
begging to be scratched/picked/bitten and even chopped using my nail clippers. My nails are
reasonably short too.

What I would like to know, is what is the difference between the two?
And if possible, then would you mind providing some feedback on treatment?
It is very irritating and I would appreciate any responses, thanks.

Thank you, Ellenor Colenso.

admin answers:

Dermatitis is a skin condition that causes inflammation to the skin and it’s not contagious.
A dermatitis is not caused by a virus or fungus that’s why it can’t spread from person to
person.
Allergies can cause dermatitis. Other examples of auto immune dermatitis : Psoriasis, eczema.

Only a doctor after proper examination and maybe a biopsy if needed can tell if it’s a dermatitis
or fungus ( athlete’s feet ).

If it’s Tinea ( fungal infection ) it’s contagious and you could have got it from the bathroom you
were sharing with other people.

Treatments for dermatitis are topical corticosteroid creams.

                                                                                              5/9
Treatments for fungus can vary depending the severity of it. Most cases are mild and can be
treated at home with antifungal medication or home made remedies. It will take time and
patience though, fungus is hard to eliminate.
If you have a more severe infection your dermatologist may prescribe a stronger antifungal
medicine which will usually be in tablet form.

Self care :

Wash your feet regularly and throughly using soap and water.
Dry your feet completely as soon as you get out of the shower. Wet areas are a great
environment for fungus to grow.
Wear clean cotton socks.
Change your socks and shoes regularly to help keep your feet dry.
Do not share towels and wash your towels often.

Get some 100% Tea Tree Oil and apply it with a cotton bud in clean feet 1-2 times a day. It’s
antifungal and antibacterial and can treat mild cases of Athlete’s feet. Be patient it will take
time.
Sugar is what feeds the fungus, so the less sugar you eat every day the better the results of
clearing the fungus.
