Check In-Sharing on Success, Challenges and the National Problem Gambling
Conference
Mary Anne Dearborn- Championing more integration of prevention services and
started a committee that pulled together the alcohol drug coordinator, SPF,
problem Gambling prevention and the tobacco prevention person. This is working
well in terms of sharing information. This is the starting phase, but an overall
integrated approach is on the horizon.
Jessica Jacks-Deschutes, Crook County and Deschutes county had a successful
environmental scan of the retail environment (alcohol, tobacco, gambling), we are
just reviewing the results and will share with them on the next meeting.
Alex Bitz- Starting to work on gambling with our partners and the environmental
scan.
Ramon Zalaya- Working with the committee that is working on school protocol
toolkits-in development, a list of resources for schools for youth who are at risk
and need supports, utilizing a restorative Justice model in the schools. Working to
ensure Problem gambling is present in that process. Also working on social norms
group, ensuring that problem gambling is involved. Went to the conference and
had a great time and excellent presentation.
Danette Killinger- Hiring a new person for the problem gambling recently
completed an environmental scan. Would like to work with Deschutes to see

2. lessons learned which could be applied to their process.
Jennifer, Marion County-sitting in for Lisa Miller, she said the newer strategy is
based on an idea shared from Linn County we developed a survey for local
retailers on recognizing signs etc..
Kelly Locey -Environmental scan assessment piece is sweeping everyone-we are
working more with the TPEP coordinator, hired an intern to work on that for us.
Did environmental scan for alcohol, tobacco, lottery etc. Good news is the lottery
machines are in sight of employees. Working on presentation that integrates
tobacco, alcohol and gambling.
Jennifer Versteeg- Finished a move into an integration of health promotion unit.
Promotion prevention team is all together. Conducting a community assessment.
Jerry O’Sullivan-Working on a healthy corner store project with the youth
prevention team to do surveys about what they sell, what they advertise and what
the profits are. We are working on sharing with the retailers alternatives to bad
products.
Becca Hueser- We have lots going on with us here. We did the environmental scan
of all retailers in our county who sell lottery, alcohol and tobacco and worked
closely with the TPEP coordinator. It was a good marriage and the surveys are just
wrapping up. We did compliance checks with OLCC and had a 78% compliance
rate. Consistently apply compliance checks. Doing some data mapping and the
environmental scans and corner story assessments. Working to increase the number
of prepared problem gambling treatment on the youth side so we will have two
more and be able to provide culturally competent services for problem gambling.
Will be working on alternatives to suspension.
Julie Hynes- Completed an environmental scan and gambling did not come up as
an issue in the assessment. Coming up with other. We are facing this problem that
people do not see that problem gambling is an issue. CCO are making lots of
changes and trying to get the tracking of the integration. Does anyone have any
ideas on what we are able to evaluate with our progress. We talk about problem
gambling with assessment and mental health first aid. We look at our assessment
but problem gambling we have not set up tools or questions for addressing this
issue. With the CCO we are dealing with the SBIRT and we need to get problem
gambling questions into this assessment.
Deanne Mansveld-Great experience at the National Conference, I was a little
disappointed with the prevention stuff. Overall, it was a great experience and was a
lot of fun and working on integration.

3. Shawn Martinez-echoing the sentiments from the Deanne. The prevention has
really improved. It was not quite what I was looking for so it was good.

AMH Prevention Update
Advertising/lottery
Responsible gambling
The Department of Justice Ruling that the Oregon Lottery may not spend their
administrative dollars on advertisements targeted to people needing problem
gambling treatment. I would like to make sure everyone understands that this
issue has no impact on our problem gambling prevention and treatment funding
to providers and counties. Those dollars are intact and other solutions are being
pursued to ensure that these crucial advertisements can be at some point
restored.
Debbie Utley-Is there anything we can do to help move that forward with the
budget. If there is any talking points that would be supportive. What are the
facts how many – we could update the 2011-2012 facts to reflect current
thinking.
