Persuasive Essay : Why School Uniforms?
Today, many schools around the world require students to wear uniforms. Many people feel that
uniforms reduce competition among students and bring a sense of unity within the school. People
who are against school uniforms think that they prevent students from expressing themselves by
obstructing individuality. Many students dislike school uniforms because uniforms can be seen as a
reversal of their rights, while others agree with uniforms because it relieves the stress of choosing
what to wear to school. As a consequence of the limitations to self–expression, school uniforms
create a sense of equality among students. I believe that students should wear uniforms because
school uniforms can reduce bullying in schools. Should students of public schools be allowed to
weigh in on decisions regarding clothing or should all students be required to wear a uniform? School
uniforms are the better option for many reasons. School uniform makes students and parents happier
because it can make students' lives simpler, they make them feel equal and can also help distinguish
students from other people and Finally, it can reduce bullying in schools. First of the primary
benefits of school uniforms is that they would help students have easier lives. In today's society,
students forget about the main reason for going to school which is to learn, and instead, they find
themselves concentrating on their outward appearance and reputation. Students that wear uniforms

The Benefits of School Uniforms
Just imagine an intruder is in your school and the police are trying to find him but he's blended in
with the crowd. Now imagine a intruder in your school and everybody is wearing a school
uniform except for the intruder. This will allow police to effortlessly pick him out of the crowd and
capture him. Unfortunately, all across the world, this fantasy is a reality. For years, there has been a
huge controversy going on about school uniforms and how they affect students performances socially
and academically. The opposition states that school uniforms are costly and takes away the freedom
to express oneself as an individual, yet school uniforms insure student safety and help students stay
focussed during school. Although some opponents express the idea that school uniforms are costly
and take away the students freedom to express themselves, they fail to recognize that school
uniforms insure the safety of students, helps them stay focussed and are cost effective.
Some people think that school uniforms are costly and that they take away the freedom to express
oneself as an individual. In the article, "The Pros and Cons of School Uniforms," Johne stated, "The
most recently released survey by the Ontario Student Trustees' Association found that a majority of
students––close to 65 per cent–– didn't think uniforms would enhance the school environment." This
number is coming from a variety of students from which more than half of them were opposed to
the idea of school uniforms due to various reasons. If most of the students think that school uniforms
wouldn't enhance the school environment, isn't there an obvious solution? To back this up, in the
same article, the principal at Blyth Academy in London, Ont. explains "For teenagers, this stage of
development is all about deciding their individuality, we find that not having uniforms creates an
environment where they're comfortable in their own skin." Just imagine that you have a favorite
pair of clothes and you do your best work in that pair of clothes. Now your school is making you
wear a school uniform that affects your learning academically because you don't feel comfortable
and cannot concentrate on the task at hand.

Persuasive Essay On Uniforms
Uniforms, a very controversial subject in many schools between the student body and
administrators. As a student who does have to wear uniforms, I'm well too familiar with the topic.
Many of my peers complain about it very often when they don't see all the positive things that come
with it. Personally, I prefer uniforms because they come with a much easier lifestyle and not what I
would have if I could wear my own clothes. I think all students should learn to appreciate what
uniforms do for them. That may seem odd since that's not typical for a student to prefer them but,
they're less money throughout the school year, time–saving while getting ready for school, prevent
outcasting, and cause creativity. Everyone knows that a new school...show more content...
Students being outcast or bullied is one of the main reasons I think uniforms are something many
high schools should actually look into. As a high school student, I know what it is like to feel
pressured to be the coolest and look the best. With uniforms, everyone wears the same thing so
nobody is really outcast on what they wear or how expensive their clothes are. Many students
families may not have the money to afford nice and cool clothes and some are but, with having to
wear uniforms to school you can never tell so students who may not be able to afford certain
things don't have to feel bad about it. Which is why it should be more heavily used in high school
than in elementary like it is today. Yes, I cannot deny that uniforms are very plain and boring but
there is an upside to that. Since you do have to wear a uniform you get the chance to get your
creative juices flowing. You have to find ways to show your personality through your appearance in
other ways such as shoes, accessories, jackets or cardigans, etc. Students get to determine how
people see them in other ways which lets them add their own unique twist to their look. In my
opinion, that forces you to find yourself and all your likes and dislikes when it comes to you as a
person. That may be something minor but the older you get it becomes something you value.
Uniforms are not something that you as students should complain about and try to find out all the
negative things about them. But,

Persuasive Essay Against School Uniforms
Uniforms have swept through the world, taking over schools, and restraining students in outfit
choices. Though many people are for uniforms, many, however, are not. With a constant debate on
whether uniforms are needed, I stand objectified against the use of uniforms, because research
proves uniforms have a negative impact. Not only are the students negatively affected by uniforms,
but so are the parents. So why do administrators put such a restraint on the clothing students wear?
The short answer; they want to eliminate many of the problems that come along without the use of
uniforms. Instead, more problems were created in its place, yet school boards are still blind to the
cries of those against it. With a world so against change, open mindedness, and lack of freedom, I
plan to examine the 'side effects' of wearing uniforms. Research has shown uniforms are very
costly, does not allow freedom of expression, and does not help in the long run to further a
student's learning. School uniforms have proved to be very costly. Statistics have shown the
average person spends 230 dollars annually on uniforms. A total of 1,300,000,000 dollars is spent
in the United States every year on uniforms. Also, this has shown that third class citizens are
"breaking the bank," for their child's uniform costs. The Guardian warns that a rising number of
academies and free schools are piling on extra pressure as clothing grants are axed. As more state
schools demand costly branded uniforms, poorer families begin to struggle. Many families also
spend money on uniforms as well as their child's everyday clothing. This is a sign to show how
uniforms affect your bank account negativity. Publilius Syrus once said, "a small debt produces a
debtor; a large one an enemy." Hi–Line Online speaks of how administrators and parents believe
uniforms eliminates bullying, but in its place there is a concern that students cannot find their own
sense of style. In this case this can hinder how a student feels outside of uniforms. They begin to be
used to 'fitting in' with everyone else around them, so when they try to explore outside of uniforms,
it can be very difficult. The society we live in today allows this freedom, wearing whatever

Americans spend large amounts of money every year on clothes, when their children return to
school. Students want name brand clothing that comes with a high price tag, and not all parents can
afford these expensive brands; due to this, it leaves their children to be ridiculed by the students who
parents can. The mocking from peers affects students emotionally. Another issue with students being
able to decide for themselves what to wear is their choice to wear inappropriate attire. There is much
controversy within schools when determining what clothing is considered appropriate or
inappropriate. The argument has been made that by requiring students to wear uniforms it takes
away their individuality. This encourages the students to focus on their outward appearance more
than their inner characteristics. In the past attitudes toward school uniforms has been negative, but
according to West, Tidwell, Bomba, and Elmore, "This practice is changing as more U.S. public
school administrators have become interested in the use of school uniforms" (pg.92). Students
should be required to wear uniforms to school because it reduces the cost of school clothes, makes
everyone equal, and removes the issue of inappropriate attire.
Every year parents spend large amounts of money on clothes for their children in preparation for the
beginning of a new school year. This price increases with the desire to purchase expensive name
brand clothes to fit in with other students. School uniforms can

On a hot summer day in the middle of August, a loud ring is heard in the courtyard of a public
schools where thousands of children wearing the same collared shirt, khaki pants, or pleated skirt
with an upside–down smile as they pour into the lengthy school hallways. They leave behind their
bathing suits, athletic shorts, and tank tops for the dark colored apparel that the school cherishes
so much. These frowns are not because of the learning the children are about to endure but
instead because of the attire they are forced to wear. According to a survey of Nevada students,
90% of youth said that they didn't like having to wear a uniform at school. Let's rewind a minute
and think back to all our own first days of schools. The best part about going back was getting to
go shopping beforehand in order pick up a unique first day of school outfit that no one else would
have. By requiring students to wear specific attire it takes away the excitement of the first day of
school. The problem of requiring public school students to wear school uniforms not only restricts
student's freedom of expression but also promotes conformity as well as undermines the promise of
a free education, which is why the best solution in this situation would be to banned uniforms in
public school systems.
No two children are exactly alike, and each child is raised to have their own ideas, and opinions.
Many students express their thoughts through the clothing choices they choose to wear. By requiring
children to wear school uniforms, it minimizes their freedom of expression.
"Clothing is also a popular means of expressing support for various social causes and compulsory
uniforms largely remove that option." By not allowing children to embrace their different clothing
styles, it takes away their rights to have opinions on various matters. Some would say that the lack of
support on various social causes in school lessens distraction in the learning community however
students still find ways to express their opinions through other avenues. Therefore, requiring school
uniforms is not the solution for controlling opinions.
Growing up, parents teach their children not to be a follower but instead a leader. However, that

Over many years there have been many issues at schools. Many controversial subjects have been
talked about, however there is one subject that we should focus on as a community. That Subject
is on school uniforms. School uniforms have been around for years and years, and are most
likely going to be around for more years to come. School uniforms have been implemented into
many schools, and in those schools, students and others have their freedom of expression
repressed and taken away. Many believe that uniforms stops bullying however there is no evidence
supporting that fact, and students still get bullied. However some people believe that Uniforms
reduce crime and increases student safety. School uniforms, in general are not a helpful thing for
students. School uniforms decrease ways for children to express themselves and their individuality.
Uniforms also go against the first amendment of the constitution of the United states, which states
/guarantees individuals their freedom of expression. In a supreme court hearing Tinker v. Des
Moines it states "It can hardly be argued that either students or teachers shed their constitutional
rights to freedom of expression at the schoolhouse gate", meaning students shouldn't have to give
up their rights at school. Clothing to students, is a way of self expression and individuality, it
gives them a chance to show off how they feel, who they are, etc. Students can also use their self
chosen clothes for bigger purposes such as creating awareness for breast cancer by wearing pink
or promoting awareness for other diseases. All in all, as long as the school uniform system is being
implemented, students as a community will not be able to express themselves to their fullest
potential, and will be forced to conform to how society wants them. Schools that enforce uniforms
are forcing kids conform instead of being unique in their own way. When students are forced to
wear uniforms, it may send a contradictory message, because schools teach about non conformity
and yet they are forcing kids to conform and wear the same thing everyone else is? The same thing
goes with how they teach other things, some schools are teaching kids ways to think, they are
making students think alike now

School Uniforms Favored by private schools and institutions, school uniforms are the mandatory
clothing an individual must wear when going to school, but in public schools it is becoming
more common in high poverty areas. When having uniforms, it is said to allow an even playing
field among students and lowers social anxieties, and encourages kids to focus on their studies in
comparison to their clothes within the United States. Yet others say, school uniforms attack the
student's rights to express their individuality, have little to no positive effect on how children act,
their academic standpoint, and emphasizes the social anxieties that individuals are trying to hide
such as fear of not fitting in.. We treat kids as if they are going to do harm in the world, but it is
said that school uniforms limit gangs and violence among children, therefore we should have
uniforms. But not all kids are harmful to others, when we apply uniforms it has the chance to
limit these problems, yet for the kids who were raised correctly, it just limits their freedom to
express themselves. Also, gang and violence can be solved in other ways without limiting
individuality, such as having stricter rules on campus and or having tighter security. When
children enter school for the first day the first thing that goes into their head is not that they will
focus on school work, but actually what they are going to wear so that they can impress others
and make friends. With school uniforms, it puts the focus more on school on those days since
everyone has to wear the same thing, but in comparison it also takes away how children socialize
using what they wear and take away most of the creativity in what they wear. Also, when wearing
uniforms it mostly gender specific so for girls they wear skirts and white button up and guys
black slacks and white button up. This way of dressing can make it incredibly uncomfortable for
girls who do not like to wear skirts because they can show off too much skin and other parts and
for guys it can make a hot day into a sweaty day for them, showing off sweat stains making them
very uncomfortable. Wearing school uniforms creates an even playing field for everyone, by not
making one person seems above

It is a belief that school uniforms teach students to respect their learning environment and behave
themselves, and, therefore improving discipline. However, that assumption isn't entirely correct.
Researchers have actually found that school uniforms don't make students better behaved. According
to a study of more than 4,500 students, those who wore a school uniform did not have fewer behavior
problems or better attendance. Forcing students to wear uniforms lead to more problems and
misbehavior instead of encouraging discipline. Students could get into trouble if they did not wear
their uniforms correctly. Many kids in today's society cannot stand the thought of someone telling
them what to do, especially what to wear. Instead of encouraging respect, uniforms may cause
rebellions. For example, in 2009, a group of students at John A. Ferguson Senior High School
rebelled against their school uniforms. Instead of following their school uniform requirements, the
students wore what they thought would be a better school uniform to school. Not only uniforms
don't earn schools the respect from its students, but it may also lead to more problems. Some critics
say that school uniforms increase the amount of clothing that parents have to buy for their children,
meaning that they would have to spend more money. Students wouldn't wear their uniforms outside
of school, so parents would have to buy casual clothing for their child to wear outside of school.

As a society we value the individual choices that we are able to decide upon in our everyday life.
School uniforms have a negative effect on students, due to the lack of individuality and self–image
that they are able to express. Therefore passing student policies requiring school uniforms is
misleading as it creates more issues than it solves. Students should feel they are different from
everyone else and have to freedom to act the way they want and wear what they want. Enforcing
school uniforms does not affect academic situations in any way for uniforms to be mandatory.
Schools need to re–think their decision on school uniform policies for the mental and physical
well–being of their students. In society we are able to express ourselves by what we wear, but that
is not true for students who have school uniform policies. Students have freedom of expression, let
them use it. Schools are too strict on kids, and are creating more problems for themselves than they
can handle. In an article from greatschools.org, a student was suspended for violating a school
uniform policy; however, he was protected from the courts. The student wore an "anti–Bush political
statement shirt", and suspended from school for violating the school dress code. However, the courts
disagreed with the school acquisition. The student's shirt depicted Bush surrounded by drugs and
alcohol, causing the school to suspend him. The student should not have been suspended for
freedom of expression. The shirt was

Although some critics may argue that it should be mandatory for students to wear uniforms, they
have evidently been misled. Uniforms kill individuality and creativity, are too expensive for some,
and can lower both self–esteem and performance of students in school. Many critics are bringing to

Having to pay for an expensive $600 school uniform would do nothing but hinder their education as
well as their chances for a brighter future. According to expert statistics provided by the U.S.
Census Bureau in 2015, 14.5% of American families were living below the poverty line. That's over
45 million Americans that cannot spare money for school uniforms. Furthermore, these families
might be ones who have recently immigrated to the United States looking for a new start or are
struggling to support their loved ones. Trivial things such as school uniforms should not be the
reason why students cannot attend school or are ostracised by their peers.
Above all, uniforms can severely lower both self–esteem and performance in students.
According to a study done by Karen Pine, a professor and researcher in psychology, "[When wearing
heroic clothing] not only did it make [people] more confident, but it also made them actually think
they were physically stronger... the students rated themselves as more likeable and superior to other
students." Essentially, Pine is attempting to convey that a person's attire affects their confidence and
how they perform. It is the mentality of the person that affects their overall performance during the
day. School uniforms are proven to have lowered the confidence and overall achievement. Pine
further goes on to state that "[when] women were ask to do a maths test in a swimsuit

The thought of school uniforms seems like an old–fashioned thing for many of us. Unless a student
goes to a private school, it is usually not a topic brought within families. Yet throughout different
countries, having school uniforms is normal. Students in schools that are required to have school

school.
In recent times, debates have grown stronger with in schools and parents over whether or not school

Healthguide.org also states that it's true that children at school that are in uniform will feel like
putting more work than if they weren't to have uniforms, that they would take their education as a
joke. School uniforms show that having them actually help students to have a safer and positive
environment and creates a good learning environment.
School Uniforms encourage students to become more aware of their learning skills. Students will
sometimes feel as though they are not getting the most out of going to a public school. I learned about
this opinion that people had this year when I got the chance to meet other students that were coming
from both a public and private environment. I never noticed how opinionated students were until I
asked one of the students I met "Did you learn more in a public school without uniforms or in a
private a school with uniforms?" .
A way that school uniforms create good learning environments is by not having to worry about what
they wear on a daily basis. Healthguidance.org states that it's true that children at school that are in

School uniforms are starting to be enforced more and more in schools as time goes on. Uniforms
might limit self expression in their clothes but it does not limit their learning which is the whole
purpose of going to school after all. School uniforms in both private and public schools can be
beneficial to students in regards of their social and academic skills. School uniforms can help
prevent bullying and will make it easier on some students and parents as well. This debate
whether school uniforms should be enforced or not has been a debate that has been going on for
years and having uniforms has more of a positive impact than a negative Enforcing school
uniforms can decrease the rate in bullying. Considering that one of the main reasons kids get
bullied are for their clothing, having them all wear the same thing will alleviate that problem.
Also the children that come from a low income family won't feel left out and like they don't fit in
because they can't wear the newest "trends". Uniforms can make the campus of any school more
friendlier and have less problems with bullying. School uniforms will make everyone look the
same and they all will be wearing the same brand so no student can feel embarrassed on where
they got their clothes from or which brand it is. School uniforms can make life also easier for the
parents. Some parents might struggle with money and with having uniforms it can make it easier
on the parents because they don't need to buy as much clothes, they can just keep washing them
and reusing them. Majority of all private schools have school uniforms and it would be a good
idea to just make all schools that way. Another pro to school uniforms is if there was an intruder
or someone that does not belong to that school you will be able to tell easily. The common
argument against uniforms is that they limit self expression but there are other ways you can
express yourself. Not only can you express yourself in your personality but you can join other clubs
to be involved and express yourself in them. With uniforms there is different options on what style

Everybody that attended school either was freely able to wear what they want, or they wore a
school uniform. School uniforms is a highly debated topic among parents, teachers, and students
throughout the world. It has even been to the court. Everyone has either been in a school, went to
school, or knows what goes on in school, therefore, it relates to all. While it may be argued that
school uniforms shouldn't be worn in school, they should be worn in school, because they decrease
bullying in schools, and make schools much safer.
Having students wear uniforms in school will decrease the amount of bullying that occurs in schools
today. Currently in todays time, uniforms have been known to diminish the amount of bullying that
occurs in school. One study reveals that "Two–thirds of parents say wearing a school uniform puts
students on a level playing field and makes their life easier, according to the survey of 1,318
teachers, parents and pupils. Seven in 10 respondents believe uniforms reduce the pressure on
young people to wear the latest fashion, a factor in bullying" (Dunne). By supplying uniforms in
schools, bullying is cut down by a great deal. Students today want to wear the latest and coolest
fashion to look stylish in school. However, many parents can't afford it, so students are projected to

School Uniform And Individuality Essay
Us as students often like to express ourselves through clothing, and having the school board or
county to take away that one simple right and giving students uniforms would take away their
right to express themselves freely and individually. If schools want students to not feel
imprisoned in anyway or feel obligated to something they don't have any interest in, they should
NOT have mandatory uniforms. School uniforms limit individuality in some ways that certain
humans take seriously. Schools without uniforms are filled with various colors of people's
choice and having this sometimes helps the students and even staff get the overall mood of the
school environment. With uniforms, the school would be one or two colors, creating a boring
and almost depressing mood. Also, there is the fact or opinion, some people call it, that school
uniforms can be ugly and people having to deal with this everyday could make people angry,
setting a bad tone each day. Feeling free is considered very important key to school students,
especially teenagers. While the students are already held back by certain rules and restrictions, they
still feel as if they should have freedom by simply choosing their own clothes and even shoes, which
some school uniforms require them to have certain ones. With school uniforms, this would take

Dividing students by the way the look and their finical stability leads to bullying. Those who are
more fashion forward may target other students who are not fashion forward, resulting in long–term
problems caused by bullying. Caitlin Kelly, a young girl entering a new high school in Toronto wrote
about how bullying "scarred" her. She says, "I was fourteen and also new to a public school, having
attended only private and mainly single–sex schools in grades four to nine. Boys were alien species.
I had no idea how to dress fashionably..." (Kelly "PressReader"). This girl's lack of fashion sense
resulted in her being picked on and taunted by boys and girls every day. Nobody should have to go
through this kind of pain, and she surely did not deserve the cruelty she received for so long. The
bullying students experience due to a lack of fashion sense in schools is absurd, and this can be
eliminated with school uniforms. Second, school uniforms will increase student's academic success
significantly. With school uniforms, it is guaranteed that they will not be a distraction to students. In
schools where no uniforms are implemented, students may focus a considerably large amount on

The uniform ensures a certain cohesion within a group, and offers a feeling of belonging, in this
case, to a school institution. Rangers, firemen, policemen, flight attendants, nurses, soldiers,
hoteliers, some priests wear a uniformity which allows to quickly identify their functions, and which
offers a certain prestige to the profession. When a student wears a school uniform, we can quickly
identify the school from which this pupil comes. In addition, wearing a school uniform can be
considered as a rite that would allow the student to feel integrated into the larger school group or less
quickly.
Most students adhere more easily to the "codes" of THEIR school thanks to a uniform or a dress code
that sometimes consists of some students rhetoric to print a sweatshirt with the name of the school.
Wearing polo's and khakis in private schools has long been customary almost universally because it
symbolized the equality for all students, without religious and social distractions. If all schools
required informs it would help put everyone back into retrospective making no child different from
the next. The argument that school uniforms stifles student's individuality and creativity, but in fact
school uniforms helps fight against all forms of discrimination that may arise between students
because of race, gender, religions and social classes. School uniform gives students a sense of unity,

By mandating uniforms in school young people are less distracted and are more focused on
learning, uniforms simply help young people avoid the everyday hassle of always having to be
fashionable because of today's social media and society in a whole. Uniforms help eradicate social
differences, it lessens commotion and lessen teasing about inequalities of what other are wearing.
Many parents and students believe that wearing uniforms lessens student's individuality and by

Beneficial Clothing for Schools
Around the world many schools require their students to wear school uniforms. Many students do
not adore this idea, but do they really know how it benefits them. Some wonder if these uniforms
really improve their learning and experiences in school. Many questions do arise when schools
consider this idea. The debate today is growing as schools try to figure out how they can enhance
their school. There are many improvements in school systems when they make this decision to add
school uniforms. Youngstown State University found that school uniform policies promote the rate
of attendance, graduation suspension (Occupy Theory Staff). School uniforms can benefit not only
the atmosphere where the student is learning, but also their focus on education to help them succeed
in the future.
An advantage of having school uniforms is it maintains students focus on education. Students are
more likely to be centralized on the information taught by teachers. They will not be concerned about
others clothing because everyone is wearing the same outfit. School uniforms improve the learning
environment because it decreases the amount of bullying. Therefore, students get a better education
because they are relaxed and can concentrate to their best. School uniforms prepare students for the

Have you ever had to wear a school uniform? Did you you love it, or hate it? I'm here today to
explain my stance on school uniforms. I believe that having a school uniform would be a good
thing for multiple reasons. The first being how it would completely and utterly eradicate the issue
of dress code. The next reason is how it would be able to create a more focused learning
environment by eliminating clothing distractions. The most important reason in my mind however,
is how it could drastically increase student safety at school. Now I will go a bit more in depth as I
explain these reasons...
As aforementioned, uniforms are very beneficial for a multitude of reasons. The first being how
dress code issues are completely eliminated through uniforms. I mean, even here uniforms and
dress code issues have been brought up a ton! I was in honors civics last trimester and we had to
do an issue project about problems at this school, and how we could fix it. We had to present these
things in front of Mr.Farley and a couple school administrators. Something that was majorly
brought up was dress code, and how unfair it is between the genders. Think about that! Even here
dress code is a big problem, and if it's an issue here, then imagine how bad it must be at some other
schools.
Another big benefit to having a school uniform is the increase of student safety in multiple things.
The first, is the reduction of bullying. This happens at schools with mandatory uniforms because it
gives bullies less ammunition. Bullies have less ammunition because social status and wealth are not
visible to other students because everyone is wearing the same thing. Another thing more broad than
bullying is physical student safety. For example, at a K–8 school system in Long Beach,CA enforced
a two year mandatory uniform policy and the results were staggering. Assault reports dropped by
34%. Sex offences got cut by a whopping 74%! Fighting incidents decreased by 51%, and
vandalism dropped by 18%. It is crazy to me how much things can improve in just two short years
by having kids wear uniforms. One more thing, is that it makes it a lot easier to identify trespassers.
I mean think of all the school shootings that have

Why Is School Uniforms Persuasive Essay
It's no misconception that uniforms are mandatory in most Catholic schools (57% of them,
actually), right? Well, even though you should know that, how about we dig deeper, and find out
if they're truly a good thing? Well, this essay will be on the topic of school uniforms. I believe that
uniforms themselves are completely fine. They make life easier for students and parents alike, as
they don't have to pick and choose what they want to wear. Uniforms are also worn to represent the
fact that everyone is equal . Uniforms can also improve safety at school, and school related
expeditions. Although the uniforms themselves may be limiting, it doesn't mean that students all
have to wear shirts and pants. These are the main points I'd like to discuss...show more content...
At first glance, it may not seem like they do much in regards of a students safety, but when a
school goes on a field trip, remember: Since they all look the same, it means that they are easily
identifiable compared to other schools. This means for teachers it is much easier to get the students
together, which saves lots of time and trouble for everyone.
Continuing from the last paragraph, I discussed the safety on school expeditions, but now I will
remind you of how it affects school grounds too. Though this is not as prominent, I believe that
uniforms reduce the bullying rates that involve children. The reason why I'm saying this, is because
that some kids are bullied due to their interests, and clothes could easily express what they like,
gathering attention. It also seems like it could encourage people to realize that bullying someone just
for their interests isn't a reasonable thing.
My final statement about my feelings towards uniforms, about how although they're all the same
style, uniforms can still be diverse like other clothing. They can still be made out of different
materials, there are multiple kinds of types that students could wear; skirts, cardigans, dress pants,
etc. Since the only policy in elementary is just the colours, students can still embrace their favourite
kinds of clothing when it comes to

Persuasive Essay On Uniforms

  • 1. Persuasive Essay : Why School Uniforms? Today, many schools around the world require students to wear uniforms. Many people feel that uniforms reduce competition among students and bring a sense of unity within the school. People who are against school uniforms think that they prevent students from expressing themselves by obstructing individuality. Many students dislike school uniforms because uniforms can be seen as a reversal of their rights, while others agree with uniforms because it relieves the stress of choosing what to wear to school. As a consequence of the limitations to self–expression, school uniforms create a sense of equality among students. I believe that students should wear uniforms because school uniforms can reduce bullying in schools. Should students of public schools be allowed to weigh in on decisions regarding clothing or should all students be required to wear a uniform? School uniforms are the better option for many reasons. School uniform makes students and parents happier because it can make students' lives simpler, they make them feel equal and can also help distinguish students from other people and Finally, it can reduce bullying in schools. First of the primary benefits of school uniforms is that they would help students have easier lives. In today's society, students forget about the main reason for going to school which is to learn, and instead, they find themselves concentrating on their outward appearance and reputation. Students that wear uniforms do not have Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. The Benefits of School Uniforms Just imagine an intruder is in your school and the police are trying to find him but he's blended in with the crowd. Now imagine a intruder in your school and everybody is wearing a school uniform except for the intruder. This will allow police to effortlessly pick him out of the crowd and capture him. Unfortunately, all across the world, this fantasy is a reality. For years, there has been a huge controversy going on about school uniforms and how they affect students performances socially and academically. The opposition states that school uniforms are costly and takes away the freedom to express oneself as an individual, yet school uniforms insure student safety and help students stay focussed during school. Although some opponents express the idea that school uniforms are costly and take away the students freedom to express themselves, they fail to recognize that school uniforms insure the safety of students, helps them stay focussed and are cost effective. Some people think that school uniforms are costly and that they take away the freedom to express oneself as an individual. In the article, "The Pros and Cons of School Uniforms," Johne stated, "The most recently released survey by the Ontario Student Trustees' Association found that a majority of students––close to 65 per cent–– didn't think uniforms would enhance the school environment." This number is coming from a variety of students from which more than half of them were opposed to the idea of school uniforms due to various reasons. If most of the students think that school uniforms wouldn't enhance the school environment, isn't there an obvious solution? To back this up, in the same article, the principal at Blyth Academy in London, Ont. explains "For teenagers, this stage of development is all about deciding their individuality, we find that not having uniforms creates an environment where they're comfortable in their own skin." Just imagine that you have a favorite pair of clothes and you do your best work in that pair of clothes. Now your school is making you wear a school uniform that affects your learning academically because you don't feel comfortable and cannot concentrate on the task at hand. • 3. Persuasive Essay On Uniforms Uniforms, a very controversial subject in many schools between the student body and administrators. As a student who does have to wear uniforms, I'm well too familiar with the topic. Many of my peers complain about it very often when they don't see all the positive things that come with it. Personally, I prefer uniforms because they come with a much easier lifestyle and not what I would have if I could wear my own clothes. I think all students should learn to appreciate what uniforms do for them. That may seem odd since that's not typical for a student to prefer them but, they're less money throughout the school year, time–saving while getting ready for school, prevent outcasting, and cause creativity. Everyone knows that a new school...show more content... Students being outcast or bullied is one of the main reasons I think uniforms are something many high schools should actually look into. As a high school student, I know what it is like to feel pressured to be the coolest and look the best. With uniforms, everyone wears the same thing so nobody is really outcast on what they wear or how expensive their clothes are. Many students families may not have the money to afford nice and cool clothes and some are but, with having to wear uniforms to school you can never tell so students who may not be able to afford certain things don't have to feel bad about it. Which is why it should be more heavily used in high school than in elementary like it is today. Yes, I cannot deny that uniforms are very plain and boring but there is an upside to that. Since you do have to wear a uniform you get the chance to get your creative juices flowing. You have to find ways to show your personality through your appearance in other ways such as shoes, accessories, jackets or cardigans, etc. Students get to determine how people see them in other ways which lets them add their own unique twist to their look. In my opinion, that forces you to find yourself and all your likes and dislikes when it comes to you as a person. That may be something minor but the older you get it becomes something you value. Uniforms are not something that you as students should complain about and try to find out all the negative things about them. But, Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Persuasive Essay Against School Uniforms Uniforms have swept through the world, taking over schools, and restraining students in outfit choices. Though many people are for uniforms, many, however, are not. With a constant debate on whether uniforms are needed, I stand objectified against the use of uniforms, because research proves uniforms have a negative impact. Not only are the students negatively affected by uniforms, but so are the parents. So why do administrators put such a restraint on the clothing students wear? The short answer; they want to eliminate many of the problems that come along without the use of uniforms. Instead, more problems were created in its place, yet school boards are still blind to the cries of those against it. With a world so against change, open mindedness, and lack of freedom, I plan to examine the 'side effects' of wearing uniforms. Research has shown uniforms are very costly, does not allow freedom of expression, and does not help in the long run to further a student's learning. School uniforms have proved to be very costly. Statistics have shown the average person spends 230 dollars annually on uniforms. A total of 1,300,000,000 dollars is spent in the United States every year on uniforms. Also, this has shown that third class citizens are "breaking the bank," for their child's uniform costs. The Guardian warns that a rising number of academies and free schools are piling on extra pressure as clothing grants are axed. As more state schools demand costly branded uniforms, poorer families begin to struggle. Many families also spend money on uniforms as well as their child's everyday clothing. This is a sign to show how uniforms affect your bank account negativity. Publilius Syrus once said, "a small debt produces a debtor; a large one an enemy." Hi–Line Online speaks of how administrators and parents believe uniforms eliminates bullying, but in its place there is a concern that students cannot find their own sense of style. In this case this can hinder how a student feels outside of uniforms. They begin to be used to 'fitting in' with everyone else around them, so when they try to explore outside of uniforms, it can be very difficult. The society we live in today allows this freedom, wearing whatever Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Persuasive Essay On School Uniforms Americans spend large amounts of money every year on clothes, when their children return to school. Students want name brand clothing that comes with a high price tag, and not all parents can afford these expensive brands; due to this, it leaves their children to be ridiculed by the students who parents can. The mocking from peers affects students emotionally. Another issue with students being able to decide for themselves what to wear is their choice to wear inappropriate attire. There is much controversy within schools when determining what clothing is considered appropriate or inappropriate. The argument has been made that by requiring students to wear uniforms it takes away their individuality. This encourages the students to focus on their outward appearance more than their inner characteristics. In the past attitudes toward school uniforms has been negative, but according to West, Tidwell, Bomba, and Elmore, "This practice is changing as more U.S. public school administrators have become interested in the use of school uniforms" (pg.92). Students should be required to wear uniforms to school because it reduces the cost of school clothes, makes everyone equal, and removes the issue of inappropriate attire. Every year parents spend large amounts of money on clothes for their children in preparation for the beginning of a new school year. This price increases with the desire to purchase expensive name brand clothes to fit in with other students. School uniforms can Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Persuasive Essay On School Uniforms In School School Uniforms On a hot summer day in the middle of August, a loud ring is heard in the courtyard of a public schools where thousands of children wearing the same collared shirt, khaki pants, or pleated skirt with an upside–down smile as they pour into the lengthy school hallways. They leave behind their bathing suits, athletic shorts, and tank tops for the dark colored apparel that the school cherishes so much. These frowns are not because of the learning the children are about to endure but instead because of the attire they are forced to wear. According to a survey of Nevada students, 90% of youth said that they didn't like having to wear a uniform at school. Let's rewind a minute and think back to all our own first days of schools. The best part about going back was getting to go shopping beforehand in order pick up a unique first day of school outfit that no one else would have. By requiring students to wear specific attire it takes away the excitement of the first day of school. The problem of requiring public school students to wear school uniforms not only restricts student's freedom of expression but also promotes conformity as well as undermines the promise of a free education, which is why the best solution in this situation would be to banned uniforms in public school systems. No two children are exactly alike, and each child is raised to have their own ideas, and opinions. Many students express their thoughts through the clothing choices they choose to wear. By requiring children to wear school uniforms, it minimizes their freedom of expression. "Clothing is also a popular means of expressing support for various social causes and compulsory uniforms largely remove that option." By not allowing children to embrace their different clothing styles, it takes away their rights to have opinions on various matters. Some would say that the lack of support on various social causes in school lessens distraction in the learning community however students still find ways to express their opinions through other avenues. Therefore, requiring school uniforms is not the solution for controlling opinions. Growing up, parents teach their children not to be a follower but instead a leader. However, that Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Persuasive Essay On School Uniforms Over many years there have been many issues at schools. Many controversial subjects have been talked about, however there is one subject that we should focus on as a community. That Subject is on school uniforms. School uniforms have been around for years and years, and are most likely going to be around for more years to come. School uniforms have been implemented into many schools, and in those schools, students and others have their freedom of expression repressed and taken away. Many believe that uniforms stops bullying however there is no evidence supporting that fact, and students still get bullied. However some people believe that Uniforms reduce crime and increases student safety. School uniforms, in general are not a helpful thing for students. School uniforms decrease ways for children to express themselves and their individuality. Uniforms also go against the first amendment of the constitution of the United states, which states /guarantees individuals their freedom of expression. In a supreme court hearing Tinker v. Des Moines it states "It can hardly be argued that either students or teachers shed their constitutional rights to freedom of expression at the schoolhouse gate", meaning students shouldn't have to give up their rights at school. Clothing to students, is a way of self expression and individuality, it gives them a chance to show off how they feel, who they are, etc. Students can also use their self chosen clothes for bigger purposes such as creating awareness for breast cancer by wearing pink or promoting awareness for other diseases. All in all, as long as the school uniform system is being implemented, students as a community will not be able to express themselves to their fullest potential, and will be forced to conform to how society wants them. Schools that enforce uniforms are forcing kids conform instead of being unique in their own way. When students are forced to wear uniforms, it may send a contradictory message, because schools teach about non conformity and yet they are forcing kids to conform and wear the same thing everyone else is? The same thing goes with how they teach other things, some schools are teaching kids ways to think, they are making students think alike now Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. Persuasive Essay On School Uniforms School Uniforms Favored by private schools and institutions, school uniforms are the mandatory clothing an individual must wear when going to school, but in public schools it is becoming more common in high poverty areas. When having uniforms, it is said to allow an even playing field among students and lowers social anxieties, and encourages kids to focus on their studies in comparison to their clothes within the United States. Yet others say, school uniforms attack the student's rights to express their individuality, have little to no positive effect on how children act, their academic standpoint, and emphasizes the social anxieties that individuals are trying to hide such as fear of not fitting in.. We treat kids as if they are going to do harm in the world, but it is said that school uniforms limit gangs and violence among children, therefore we should have uniforms. But not all kids are harmful to others, when we apply uniforms it has the chance to limit these problems, yet for the kids who were raised correctly, it just limits their freedom to express themselves. Also, gang and violence can be solved in other ways without limiting individuality, such as having stricter rules on campus and or having tighter security. When children enter school for the first day the first thing that goes into their head is not that they will focus on school work, but actually what they are going to wear so that they can impress others and make friends. With school uniforms, it puts the focus more on school on those days since everyone has to wear the same thing, but in comparison it also takes away how children socialize using what they wear and take away most of the creativity in what they wear. Also, when wearing uniforms it mostly gender specific so for girls they wear skirts and white button up and guys black slacks and white button up. This way of dressing can make it incredibly uncomfortable for girls who do not like to wear skirts because they can show off too much skin and other parts and for guys it can make a hot day into a sweaty day for them, showing off sweat stains making them very uncomfortable. Wearing school uniforms creates an even playing field for everyone, by not making one person seems above Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. School Uniforms Persuasive Essay Today, many schools around the world enforce uniforms, requiring students to wear specific clothing. School uniforms, which was first established in 16th century England, are a topic of much debate in the public school system of the United States. Many people feel that uniforms reduce competition among students and bring a sense of unity in school. People who are against school uniforms think that they prevent students from expressing themselves and inhibits creativity. Many students dislike school uniforms because uniforms can be viewed as a violation of their rights, while others benefit from uniforms because it relieves the stress of picking what to wear to school. Although school uniforms do have its benefits, they also limit...show more content... It is a belief that school uniforms teach students to respect their learning environment and behave themselves, and, therefore improving discipline. However, that assumption isn't entirely correct. Researchers have actually found that school uniforms don't make students better behaved. According to a study of more than 4,500 students, those who wore a school uniform did not have fewer behavior problems or better attendance. Forcing students to wear uniforms lead to more problems and misbehavior instead of encouraging discipline. Students could get into trouble if they did not wear their uniforms correctly. Many kids in today's society cannot stand the thought of someone telling them what to do, especially what to wear. Instead of encouraging respect, uniforms may cause rebellions. For example, in 2009, a group of students at John A. Ferguson Senior High School rebelled against their school uniforms. Instead of following their school uniform requirements, the students wore what they thought would be a better school uniform to school. Not only uniforms don't earn schools the respect from its students, but it may also lead to more problems. Some critics say that school uniforms increase the amount of clothing that parents have to buy for their children, meaning that they would have to spend more money. Students wouldn't wear their uniforms outside of school, so parents would have to buy casual clothing for their child to wear outside of school. Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 10. Persuasive Essay On School Uniforms As a society we value the individual choices that we are able to decide upon in our everyday life. School uniforms have a negative effect on students, due to the lack of individuality and self–image that they are able to express. Therefore passing student policies requiring school uniforms is misleading as it creates more issues than it solves. Students should feel they are different from everyone else and have to freedom to act the way they want and wear what they want. Enforcing school uniforms does not affect academic situations in any way for uniforms to be mandatory. Schools need to re–think their decision on school uniform policies for the mental and physical well–being of their students. In society we are able to express ourselves by what we wear, but that is not true for students who have school uniform policies. Students have freedom of expression, let them use it. Schools are too strict on kids, and are creating more problems for themselves than they can handle. In an article from greatschools.org, a student was suspended for violating a school uniform policy; however, he was protected from the courts. The student wore an "anti–Bush political statement shirt", and suspended from school for violating the school dress code. However, the courts disagreed with the school acquisition. The student's shirt depicted Bush surrounded by drugs and alcohol, causing the school to suspend him. The student should not have been suspended for freedom of expression. The shirt was Get more content on HelpWriting.net

According to a study done by Karen Pine, a professor and researcher in psychology, "[When wearing heroic clothing] not only did it make [people] more confident, but it also made them actually think they were physically stronger... the students rated themselves as more likeable and superior to other students." Essentially, Pine is attempting to convey that a person's attire affects their confidence and how they perform. It is the mentality of the person that affects their overall performance during the day. School uniforms are proven to have lowered the confidence and overall achievement. I never noticed how opinionated students were until I asked one of the students I met "Did you learn more in a public school without uniforms or in a private a school with uniforms?" . A way that school uniforms create good learning environments is by not having to worry about what they wear on a daily basis. School uniforms in both private and public schools can be beneficial to students in regards of their social and academic skills. Considering that one of the main reasons kids get bullied are for their clothing, having them all wear the same thing will alleviate that problem. School uniforms will make everyone look the same and they all will be wearing the same brand so no student can feel embarrassed on where they got their clothes from or which brand it is. • 15. School Uniform And Individuality Essay Us as students often like to express ourselves through clothing, and having the school board or county to take away that one simple right and giving students uniforms would take away their right to express themselves freely and individually. If schools want students to not feel imprisoned in anyway or feel obligated to something they don't have any interest in, they should NOT have mandatory uniforms. School uniforms limit individuality in some ways that certain humans take seriously. Schools without uniforms are filled with various colors of people's choice and having this sometimes helps the students and even staff get the overall mood of the school environment. With uniforms, the school would be one or two colors, creating a boring and almost depressing mood. Also, there is the fact or opinion, some people call it, that school uniforms can be ugly and people having to deal with this everyday could make people angry, setting a bad tone each day. Feeling free is considered very important key to school students, especially teenagers. While the students are already held back by certain rules and restrictions, they still feel as if they should have freedom by simply choosing their own clothes and even shoes, which some school uniforms require them to have certain ones. With school uniforms, this would take away that sense or feeling of freedom. Without this freedom, this could cause major issues. One issue would be kids acting out. I found it easier to attend and focus on school when wearing the same clothes as everyone else. Today, tiny southern towns even to the nation's largest cities, public school uniforms have become so common this year that in many areas, they are no longer the exception, but the rule (Lewin "Dress for Success: Public School Uniforms"). Imagine a parent's comfort in knowing their child was being treated as an equal at school each and every day. No judgment or hassle on picking out an outfit to impress anyone. Dividing students by the way the look and their finical stability leads to bullying. Those who are more fashion forward may target other students who are not fashion forward, resulting in long–term problems caused by bullying. Caitlin Kelly, a young girl entering a new high school in Toronto wrote about how bullying "scarred" her. She says, "I was fourteen and also new to a public school, having attended only private and mainly single–sex schools in grades four to nine. Boys were alien species. I had no idea how to dress fashionably..." (Kelly "PressReader"). This girl's lack of fashion sense resulted in her being picked on and taunted by boys and girls every day. Nobody should have to go through this kind of pain, and she surely did not deserve the cruelty she received for so long. The bullying students experience due to a lack of fashion sense in schools is absurd, and this can be eliminated with school uniforms. Second, school uniforms will increase student's academic success significantly. With school uniforms, it is guaranteed that they will not be a distraction to students. In schools where no uniforms are implemented, students may focus a considerably large amount on what other students are wearing, instead of focusing on the learning. I now attend a public university, where students are free to wear and look however they please. I tend to notice what certain students are wearing when Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 17. Persuasive Essay On School Uniform The uniform ensures a certain cohesion within a group, and offers a feeling of belonging, in this case, to a school institution. Rangers, firemen, policemen, flight attendants, nurses, soldiers, hoteliers, some priests wear a uniformity which allows to quickly identify their functions, and which offers a certain prestige to the profession. When a student wears a school uniform, we can quickly identify the school from which this pupil comes. In addition, wearing a school uniform can be considered as a rite that would allow the student to feel integrated into the larger school group or less quickly. Most students adhere more easily to the "codes" of THEIR school thanks to a uniform or a dress code that sometimes consists of some students rhetoric to print a sweatshirt with the name of the school. Wearing polo's and khakis in private schools has long been customary almost universally because it symbolized the equality for all students, without religious and social distractions. If all schools required informs it would help put everyone back into retrospective making no child different from the next. The argument that school uniforms stifles student's individuality and creativity, but in fact school uniforms helps fight against all forms of discrimination that may arise between students because of race, gender, religions and social classes. • 19. Persuasive Speech On School Uniforms Have you ever had to wear a school uniform? Did you you love it, or hate it? I'm here today to explain my stance on school uniforms. I believe that having a school uniform would be a good thing for multiple reasons. The first being how it would completely and utterly eradicate the issue of dress code. The next reason is how it would be able to create a more focused learning environment by eliminating clothing distractions. The most important reason in my mind however, is how it could drastically increase student safety at school. Now I will go a bit more in depth as I explain these reasons... As aforementioned, uniforms are very beneficial for a multitude of reasons. The first being how dress code issues are completely eliminated through uniforms. I mean, even here uniforms and dress code issues have been brought up a ton! I was in honors civics last trimester and we had to do an issue project about problems at this school, and how we could fix it. We had to present these things in front of Mr.Farley and a couple school administrators. Something that was majorly brought up was dress code, and how unfair it is between the genders. Think about that! Even here dress code is a big problem, and if it's an issue here, then imagine how bad it must be at some other schools. Another big benefit to having a school uniform is the increase of student safety in multiple things. The first, is the reduction of bullying. This happens at schools with mandatory uniforms because it gives bullies less ammunition. Bullies have less ammunition because social status and wealth are not visible to other students because everyone is wearing the same thing. Another thing more broad than bullying is physical student safety. For example, at a K–8 school system in Long Beach,CA enforced a two year mandatory uniform policy and the results were staggering. Assault reports dropped by 34%. Sex offences got cut by a whopping 74%! Fighting incidents decreased by 51%, and vandalism dropped by 18%. It is crazy to me how much things can improve in just two short years by having kids wear uniforms. One more thing, is that it makes it a lot easier to identify trespassers. I mean think of all the school shootings that have Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 20. Why Is School Uniforms Persuasive Essay It's no misconception that uniforms are mandatory in most Catholic schools (57% of them, actually), right? Well, even though you should know that, how about we dig deeper, and find out if they're truly a good thing? Well, this essay will be on the topic of school uniforms. I believe that uniforms themselves are completely fine. They make life easier for students and parents alike, as they don't have to pick and choose what they want to wear. Uniforms are also worn to represent the fact that everyone is equal . Uniforms can also improve safety at school, and school related expeditions. Although the uniforms themselves may be limiting, it doesn't mean that students all have to wear shirts and pants. These are the main points I'd like to discuss...show more content... At first glance, it may not seem like they do much in regards of a students safety, but when a school goes on a field trip, remember: Since they all look the same, it means that they are easily identifiable compared to other schools. This means for teachers it is much easier to get the students together, which saves lots of time and trouble for everyone. Continuing from the last paragraph, I discussed the safety on school expeditions, but now I will remind you of how it affects school grounds too. Though this is not as prominent, I believe that uniforms reduce the bullying rates that involve children. The reason why I'm saying this, is because that some kids are bullied due to their interests, and clothes could easily express what they like, gathering attention. It also seems like it could encourage people to realize that bullying someone just for their interests isn't a reasonable thing. My final statement about my feelings towards uniforms, about how although they're all the same style, uniforms can still be diverse like other clothing. They can still be made out of different materials, there are multiple kinds of types that students could wear; skirts, cardigans, dress pants, etc. Since the only policy in elementary is just the colours, students can still embrace their favourite kinds of clothing when it comes to Get more content on HelpWriting.net
