1. Becoming A Better Writer Analysis
Becoming A Better Writer I believe it is important for any student who wants to succeed in class to
take a step back and self–evaluate themselves in their work. To be the best, a learner should be able
to determine how he or she is progressing and in what steps that person can take to improve his or her
writing skills. Every writer encounters setbacks in their work, when this happens the student
should know which resources are available for their assistance. I have used these methods and
have discovered that I have matured quite a bit in my writing, in just a matter of a few weeks.
Coming into my first day of English Composition class in college, I remembered very little
information from English classes in the past. I learned quickly that some of the ideas that I was
taught, were acceptable in high school, are no longer correct in college. In previous English courses
I had been taught to never begin a sentence with the word "because." In college it is okay to begin a
sentence with because. In college we are told to not use contractions, while in middle school we were
taught these in order to shorten a students...show more content...
There are websites online where I can turn or type my paper into and the computer will proof read it
for me. The websites are able to find mistakes and help me to correct the errors. I do not have to
leave home for someone to double check my work, which can be convenient for a busy schedule.
But the computer is not always able to find every single error. Something I have been having
problems with are sentence fragments. Since the computer does not catch every error, it can be
nice to have a person who is strong with this subject to help correct it. I am able to go to the
school and have someone sit and help me with correcting my paper. It would also be nice to hear in
person what I am doing wrong. With extra support and help, I am sure to succeed and become a better

2. Why I Want To Be A Writer
I want to be a writer when I grow up. Being a writer is hard. The success of your job is dependent
not only on whether you have done it well but also on whether other people think you have done
well. I would like to be a writer. I don't know if I can do it. It's like any other job; you never know
until you try. But few other jobs are as dependent on the opinions of others and on something that
has no basis in fact or logic. One word out of place can tear a whole work apart, and yet a few black
and white words arranged just so can unleash a world of color and feeling. A spark of inspiration
can create a new world from nothing, metaphorically speaking. It is the gift of God. He gives some
people a story to tell and the ability to tell it. Like any gift from God, it is something to be used to
His glory and not taken lightly. To use any gift takes work....show more content...
In college you can major in Creative Writing but many authors recommend that you do not.
Instead, they advise that you study Literature instead, the great works of authors past and present.
If you don't know what is good, how can you write something good yourself? Or you can do this
outside of college and simply read the great works of literature on your own, studying what makes
these writers great, what writing tricks and techniques make up their style. The purpose is not to
copy them; the purpose is to be inspired. To be awriter you must write. This is the most important
piece of advice. Write anything, even if it's as flat as the floor. The more you use words, the more
they become willing to be used by you. The more you write, the more you have something to write.
Writing is both a skill and a gift. It is both acquired and

How I Have Improved as a Writer Ever since I started attending Mrs.Kigar's 1st hour Senior Comp.
class, my writing skills have expanded into a new level. I learned a lot about writing for example;
before this class I had never heard of parallelism and didn't know the impact it had on writing.
Another part of my stylistic learning was learning about transitions, semicolons, commas, and
apostrophes. I also wrote almost every different style of paper too which really helps in improving
the ability to write. One thing I have improved on is using sophisticated vocabulary in my papers.
For example, from my compare and contrast paper I wrote I said, 'The boxer engine also gives the
exhaust a much better sound, which is more dulcet to the ear."(Consolla, 1) This is a prime
example of sophisticated vocabulary use in my papers. Dashes have come to be very confusing for

Writing journals helps with flow and consistency. Before this class I could never write about a
topic for 300 words. Whenever I had to write a paper, I would always draw to a blank and never
get anything done. Thanks to writing journals I have improved on my flow and consistency to
write stuff down. Some people didn't like the movie we watched earlier in the semester, The
Words; but I thought it was a excellent movie. I thought it was the perfect movie to write a movie
review on. I really like movies and enjoy watching them and criticizing them, but I had never known
the write way to do it. The movie review essay really helped to improve my writing ability. The
writing ability of me, Jack Consolla, has improved quite well throughout the semester. I have
written almost every single type of essay and have gone into detail about them and have also gone
into detailed stylistic learning about grammar uses. I feel as if I'm more ready for college and can't

A semester has passed since I started college and my journey of becoming a better writer. It has
been a very important semester for my future college career, and I would not be here without the
things I have accomplished. The composition program has really helped me to prepare for what
college writing is all about. Now standing here and looking back I could not imagine how it would
be without that class. I believe my English, and my writing is better than it has ever been, and all
thanks to the composition program. As an international student and going to school in Sweden I haft
to admit that it has not been easy. We have a totally different education system and it has therefore

I wrote about my journey and how it affected my view of life. In this writing project I learned to
write a story with a purpose and show my readers a learning movement. By using different kinds
of writing tools I could give my readers a more complex story. I learned how to write by showing
and using details (the senses) to really give my readers a deeper understanding and emotions. I also
learned in how you prepare for writing an essay. The importance of building your idea (pre–write),
write, revision, and finally editing the paper. The last writing project I did was an
Argumentative. I choose to write and argue about the television and its effects on children. What
the consequences are on playing violent/aggressive video games in young ages. Using credible
sources and prove by evidence I could convince my reader about my opinion. In this paper I had
to be fare and show both sides of the subject to give the reader a reliable opinion. The most
important thing I learned was how to use all the sources and present them in the text. Using MLA
format was something new and different for me. I realized the importance of presenting the sources
in the correct format to keep the high credibility in my paper. I also understood that the MLA–format
is very useful for paraphrasing, summarizing and quoting in my text. What I believe has helped me
through this year, and made me to a much better writer than I once

Thanks to Comp, my therapist refused to keep seeing me (Just kidding... she stopped seeing me in
9th grade). While that statement is a logical fallacy because correlation does not imply causation,
Comp has helped me improve as a writer and as a person. In the one hundred thirty–three days that I
have been a Comp student, my writing has improved quite a bit since junior year. Not only have I
learned to write faster and better, I have grown as a student, reader, writer, and thinker. Thanks to
Comp, while I do not see my therapist anymore, Comp is essentially my therapy. As I am leaning
a little more towards going to Indiana University Southeast this fall, I know that my writing skills
learned in Comp have prepared me well for when I go to IUS in the fall. Even though I work 5 days

off from work and if I push myself a little bit harder, the quality of my writing would have improved
a bit. Going along with this, if I could go back and rewrite an essay with a more qualitative style, I
would have to rewrite the college essay. It was way too redundant and predictable and it is not
the kind of writing I want to be known for, I wish to write more engaging pieces. Also, despite
wanting to rewrite the college essay, I feel like the best piece of writing was the rhetorical analysis I
did about pastors refusing to wed same–sex couples. It is the best one I have written because while I

How can I become a better writer? Throughout my writing experiences, I have learned I have many
weaknesses along with strengths. My experiences with writing has not always been the best, but
over time, with lots of practice and instructions from my instructors, I can proudly say that I have
gained a better understanding on the layout of essays and papers. As well as understanding how to
write correctly my goal as a writer is to learn how to overcome my weaknesses and use my
strengths to my highest ability. I have many strengths, weaknesses and goals that I plan to achieve
and overcome in my college career. As a recenthigh school graduate I may seem to have many more
weaknesses than strengths. But, when brainstorming for ideas to write about I noticed that I had
many more strengths than weaknesses, the complete opposite. My strengths allow me to stand out
and allow my audience to experience my writing in a positive way. I am very persuasive and can
demonstrate to others the way I believe and how I feel about a topic so they can recognize the way

may not have the same opinions as I do and it may make the reader mad or discouraged. Overall, I

Every good writer needs a solid foundation to be successful. This is true for both professional and
informal communication. Your level of education is reflected in your writing style. If it contains
many grammatical errors and lacks structure it can be perceived that you are not a very good
writer. For years, I thought I didn't need any formal education. That was a big mistake that is now
in the process of being corrected. This course has started to help me communicate more efficiently
as a business professional and be more effective in my academic studies. Knowing the writing

In the past I would just write without using a rough draft or any prewriting process. I have
benefited greatly by employing the freewriting process in my assignments. A method that I find
especially helpful came from a handout for UNC Chapel hill. Here is how the process of
freewriting was described; When you free write, you can set a time limit and just write until you
reach that goal. You might do this on the computer or on paper, and you can even try it with your
eyes shut or the monitor off, which encourages speed and freedom of thought. The crucial point
is that you keep on writing even if you believe you are saying nothing. Word must follow word, no
matter the relevance. (The writing center) The key is take the extra time to plan and review your
writing. This has helped me to focus on using proper comma placement and eliminate
grammatical errors. Whether I am posting something on social media or writing on the discussion
board I have a better understanding of what my sentences should look like. Writing can be
difficult at times but when you use the right methods and processes it enhances the overall
experience. I had to write a resume for a job posting the other day and I immediately thought back
to this course as I edited and revised my essay. Using proper sentence stress and writing with
meaningful words was key to my resume. It is the simple forms of writing that can be

9. How To Become A Writer Summary
In "How to Become a Writer" by Lorrie Moore, I found the narration to be interesting. The
narrators dialogue allowed me to not just read the sentences but made me at times feel that I was
actually there observing. This story is totally different from that of the other stories that I have
read. While I did enjoy the structure of the dialogue with each encounter being a miniature story
or experience of its own, the story does not have a traditional plot. The series of short choppy
sentences was distracting at times. At times, I wondered what point Moore was trying to get
across. The text is detailing the difficult journey that Francie is going through to become a writer.
The story begins with Moore stating, "First, try to be something, anything else, A movie star
/ astronaut. A movie star / missionary". I believe that Moore is stating that it is difficult to become
a good writer. "Show it to your Mom....She'll look briefly at your writing, the back up at you with a

In other stories that I have come across heavily full of small talk and banter it has come across as
forced and faked. The feel of Francie's struggles through college with her changing her major and
being met with criticism about her writing is real and raw. Her reader's response to her writing is
harsh and not constructive nor helpful. Why should we care about this character?" "You have no
sense of plot." "Where is the story here?" Francie continues to be chastised for the lack of
traditional plots in her stories. "The assignment this week in creative writing is to narrate a violent
happening. Turn in a story about driving with your Uncle Gordon and another one about two old
people who are accidentally electrocuted when they go to turn on a badly wired desk lamp. The
teacher will hand them back to you with comments: ''Much of your writing is smooth and energetic.

Before, when an essay is assigned, I usually begin by free writing. Free writing is a technique in

Throughout my thirteen years in school, I have considered myself a decent writer. This idea came
from me always getting good grades without ever having to put in much effort. In order for me to
become what I consider a "good" writer, I need to learn how to show why I am right and cause
others to agree with the points I make or cause others to contemplate what was written. Good writing
allows readers to understand what is going through the writer's head. Through hard work and learning
how to strengthen my weaknesses, I can become what I consider a "good" writer. Honestly, I do

that I constantly used passive voice in my papers. This was my first time ever hearing about the
passive voice, and seeing how prominent it was in my writing, I was surprised that nobody brought
this to my attention. Another problem that was brought to my attention was that my papers were
lacking detail. I thought that all that I was supposed to do in a paper was point out the main ideas of
the topics that I was writing about. I did not know that I was supposed to explain the main ideas
deeper than just the surface level. When learning about having to write with detail, I learned that it

However, as I improved in critical thinking and note taking skills, I also improved in coming up
with more ideas, evidence, and being able to determine the importance of my ideas and arguments. I

moment, I already knew exactly what to say and how to say it. For example, I took notes on the
TED Talk about technology and also the TED Talk about The American Dream, which helped me
create an outline for Assignment 3 and 4. As I used critical thinking and note taking skills, I
realized why the topic many be important, decide what I am aiming for, and make a decision

information, I also aimed to find the best reasoning for the importance of a topic. This skill was

Upon entering Columbia College, writing was one of my weaker areas. It was very important
that I gained the necessary knowledge and confidence to become a better writer. I didn't know
how to express myself and felt as though my writing was not my interest. As a result of taking
English 101, I have gained a better understanding on how to properly research and build a
satisfactory paper. Every paper that was assigned seemed like a struggle to complete. Before
entering this class, I did not know the meaning of a thesis or why it was important, however, I
obtained this skill quickly. I noticed that every paper has an argument and the thesis helps clarify
the rebuttal. Now, I have a new outlook on writing. It's a way to express my thoughts and allow
others to see things through my eyes. There is no doubt that I still have a long way to go, but I
know if I continue to write, I will get better. Just as I developed more skills in class, the various
papers assigned helped to better structure the writer in me. In addition, the subject areas were not
only interesting, but very informative and made it much easier to write about my experiences. This
portfolio demonstrates the strongest and the weakest of my writing as a first year college student
and as a rising professional of psychology major. As psychology students, we think beyond the norm

After this semester of English 102, at Bristol Community College I feel that I have gained the
skill to articulate what I want to convey to the reader in many ways. I don't just look at
grammatical error, but instead I look for ways to make my sentences more effective and concise.
Nevertheless, I hope that this strategy will continue to help me improve my writing even further
on in the future. My strong points as a reader have also definitely improved after reading the
poems and stories we experienced this semester. Writing has been an important form of
expression for me. I find myself to be very soft spoken and speaking verbally is usually difficult
for me because I can't always seem to find the right words to say. I feel that I am more expressive
and have more control over what I want to say. While this semester progressed toward its end, I
have learned new writing skills and gradually learned how to engage with audiences. This skill
was very useful in meeting my course goals in English 102. I believe that I have grown at
organization and careful stream my thoughts as well. Before I would just begin writing my papers
without any plans or organization, along with no definite idea of where I would be going with the
assignments, but throughout this course I've learned that you should base your paper around your
thesis statement. Another skill I took from this class was to value my classmate's responses, from

Everyone on the planet has a goal set in life, but only a handful attempt to improve to obtain their

essays of different styles that were new to me. The essay assignments helped me grow as a better
writer that gave me the self–confidence and skills to take on the world on my own. During the
