This was the first training session I did for using Mendeley as a Reference Management software after being inducted into the Mendeley Advisors' Group. The target group for this presentation was Master's students with no prior experience of doing research or using reference management software. These students had applied for competitive grants to the Research Capacity Building Program being run by the India Research Initiative on Peri-Urban Human-Animal-Environment Health (which employs me at the time of uploading this presentation). In addition to providing them with seed funding to support their Master's theses, the Capacity Building Program also provided multiple opportunities for learning, networking and skill building, including a workshop on the Basics of EcoHealth Research Methods, in course of which this presentation was made.
2. What is Mendeley?
• Crowdsourced database
– For that paper that eluded you forever
• Open Science!
– Free!
• Reference Manager
– Manage, read, cite papers
• Academic collaboration
network
– Think Facebook, but with
no fake news!
2
6. Connect with me… and each other!
• Find me here:
https://www.mendeley.com/profiles/pranab-
chatterjee2/
• WHY?
– Research networking
– Sharing articles
– Groups for common research topics
– Troubleshoot!
6
9. Installing Mendeley
• Navigate to “Downloads” or the location where your
downloaded file was just saved
• You will see a file like:
– Mendeley-Desktop-1.17-win32
• Double click, follow instructions, install!
9
17. But…
• You can do all these only when you have added some
documents to Mendeley
• So, how do we add documents to Mendeley?
– Through the desktop, directly
– Via the Web Importer
• But first, go to this link:
17
22. You have to remember to sync the Desktop App
with the online library!
22
23. Adding Articles: Uploading them to the Online
Mendeley Library
• Download this paper
– https://goo.gl/yN5WB8
• Go to your Mendeley
Online Library
• Click +Add
• Find and upload the
paper we just
downloaded
23
25. A third way of adding files to your library: From
the Mendeley Desktop App
• Download this file:
• Save it to the desktop or
downloads folder
25
29. Exercise 1: Finders Keepers
• Find a study by Ramanan Laxminarayan on the
trends of antibiotic consumption in livestock and
other food animals
• Add it to your online library in Mendeley
29
30. Exercise 2: Manually Editing the Entries
• Mendeley may not always correctly identify the
bibliographic information in a file or on a web page
• In such cases you may have to manually edit the
document entry
• download the following paper and edit its entry to
correctly reflect the paper using the online Mendeley
library

31. Organizing Your Library
• Now that you can add and edit entries, you may
need to organise the files using folders
• Just like in your computer, putting files in a folder
ensures that it is entered in a particular area
• Helps when you have a long list of research articles
you are working on
31
32. What does my library look like?
• You can create folders using:
– The Mendeley Desktop App
– The Online Mendeley Library
