Hinweis der Redaktion

• http://theshiftedlibrarian.com/presentations/2008/20081016Singapore.pdf Finding new ways to serve our communities and provide them with the tools, resources, learning opportunities, recreational opportunities and community
• I was at a conference recently – a talk on 2.0 – someone said “yeah, yeah – we’ve heard all about blogs & wikis – what’s the next big thing… To me it’s just continuing to do what we’ve been doing – making our resources more available to the customers Being more responsive to their wants & needs Improving the USER EXPERIENCE.
• Includes building widgets to let me take the library out of the library!

• First off What is Web 2.0? Did any of you see this cover a few years ago? USER GENERATED SITES – this is what web 2.0 is all about – users sharing information on the web, creating content, collaborating on information and creating online communities. Sometimes referred to as the READ WRITE WEB Web 20 is what the web was originally envisioned as by Tim Berners Lee Less of a one-way communication – you post it, others read it. But one where we interact with others, share information, take information and reuse it and then share it. One where we meet people online.
• Users creating content and sharing it on the web Geni – genealogy site Flickr – photo sharing and social connections You Tube – create your own videos and share them with the world More than half of all TEENS and YOUNG ADULTS (up to 30) have created some sort of content for the web. VERY popular.
• Some examples Communication A web page from a library about Harry Potter – with comments from the readers of that page Reviews on an amazon page – shows that this isn’t all new
• People of all ages are using the web to connect with other people who share similar interests. Many sites are fun sites like this Club Penguin is a popular AND SAFE site for younger kids. Some are professional – like this Library 2.0 network – encourage you to join! This is a board member for the Albany Public library who joined to learn more about Library 2.0 And what about this one – Library Thing!! I’ve met some wonderful people online, people who I now email, talk to on the phone, and some who I’ve met in person. Some are even in this room now!!!
• Web 2.0 tools get better the more people use them and contribute to them. Craigslist – works because there are so many people using it Librarything – enough people contributing to make it an interesting place Amazon – book reviews Ebay – worlds largest garage sale. You’re sure to find something you don’t need! Library catalogs – think what they could be if real people added content (think library thing) http://www.flickr.com/photos/max_westby/420339061/in/set-103171/

• http://flickr.com/photos/stabilo-boss/93136022/ Important – we need to be agile to keep up and need to be able to move on to new tools
• Concerns with privacy, reliablity.
