2. Art. 26 Constitución Política de Colombia 1991: “
Toda persona es libre de escoger profesión u
oficio. La ley podrá exigir titulos de idoneidad.
Las autoridades competentes inspeccionaraán y
vigilarán el ejercicio de las profesiones. Las
ocupaciones, artes y oficios que no exijan
formación académica son de libre ejercicio,

8. The traditional Silo approach
• Construction flows through General Contractor
• All trades work independently
• Relatively little control by the owner
• Independent systems do not communicate
• Independent systems install their own
communication platform
• Generally proprietary communication
• No systems integration
• Efficiency and energy consumption suffers Traditional – Multiple
systems, multiple proprietary
cabling types
9. The ConvergeIT/Integrated approach
• All systems communicate on a single IP platform
and communication protocol supported by a PoE
powered ConvergeIT zoned topology
• True integration, all systems have equal access
to a single BAS database
• No proprietary communication, physical
connectivity or protocols
• Construction flows through the Integrated Project
Delivery Team
• All members are involved in the decision making,
risk management and incentives ConvergeIT – Multiple
systems, one structured cabling
infrastructure

13. What is remote powering?
• Running power concurrent to
data over structured
telecommunications cabling
• Power can be injected by the
switch (end-span), or
• Power can be injected by a
device inserted into the
telecommunications channel
(mid-span)
• PoE (Power over Ethernet) is
the most commonly recognized
remote powering application
14. Potential for arcing under load conditions
• Plug and jack contacts are carefully
engineered and plated to ensure a reliable,
low resistance mating surface
• Remote powering applications offer some
protection to these critical connection
points by ensuring that dc power is not
applied over the structured cabling plant
until a PD is sensed by the PSE
• “Unmating under load” produces an arc as
the applied current transitions from flowing
through conductive metal to air before
becoming an open circuit
15. Contact integrity when mating/unmating under load
• Contacts are susceptible to damage
when mating and unmating under
remote powering current loads
• IEC 60512-99-001 specifies a test
method (non-normative)
• 100 insertions and removals under
load conditions of 55V dc and 600mA
• Siemon Z-MAX® and TERA® modular
connecting hardware complies with
IEC 60512-99-001 specifications
18. Cable sharing with Siemon TERA®
• Fully-shielded,
quadrant isolated
interface
• 1-pair and 2-pair hybrid
cords can be used to
access specific pairs
• TERA can support two
10/100BASE-T Type 1
(12.95 W to the PD) or
two Type 2 (29.95 W to
the PD) PoE “Plus”
applications as long as
power is delivered

• The green benefits mentioned
previously may be leveraged to
help gain green building credits
under LEED and similar
programs

20. Case study results
• CAPEX
– 24.2% less expensive to install integrated
systems
– 4.5% reduction in construction costs for
the whole building
– Mostly derived from labor savings
• OPEX
– 37% operational cost savings due to
faster maintenance and upgrade
implementations (MAC) work
