This presentation is based on an article Joni Dunlap and I are writing. Web Presence and Search Engine Optimization for Academics: Rethinking scholarship, “impact”, and knowledge dissemination in a “Google World” Have you googled yourself lately? What did you find? What didn’t you find? In this presentation, we argue that the first step of building a web presence is pretty simple—you have to put content on the web. But unfortunately there is more to it than that. You should be thinking about what you are putting on the web, where you are putting it, how you are naming and structuring your content, and finally how you are encouraging others to read, use, link to, apply, and hopefully cite and reference what you put on the web. This second step involves a concept called Search Engine Optimization (SEO). SEO is important and relevant, because the world has changed during the past decade. These days, the Internet is King and Google is the gateway between most people and the Internet. Academics need to begin thinking about how, when, and what shows up when someone uses Google. Like it or not, we find ourselves in a “Google world.” We believe faculty and really academics in general need to begin re-thinking what it means to be an academic and a scholar in a “Google world.” This session will cover various strategies faculty can take to improve their search engine ranking.
