I worked at Regis University for a number of years. During my time there, I developed a M.Ed. In Instructional Technology. Like many other programs, I tried to develop this program to be all things for all students. That is, I wanted to attract students interested in K12, those interested in Higher Education and those interested in working in Corporate Spaces. The core or foundation of all three of these tracks of coursework was the same.
Easily enough, right? My colleagues and I began debating how much graduates of all three of these tracks needed in Web development. More specifically, do graduates with a graduate degree in instructional technology need to know HTML, CSS, and most importantly Dreamweaver? I will reveal my cards, I think graduates do need to have a basic proficiency; this is based on my experience in the field. However, I donât presume that this will always be the case. But in many ways, this inquiry was about confirming (or rejecting) this suspicion in mind. Because fast forward 5 years laterâI find myself getting in this same discussion of whether graduates need to learn Dreamweaver or not.
So to settle the argument, we turned to the standards. But in case you havenât looked at standards, they tend not to be that specific. Rather than clearly state that all graduates with a degree in Instructional Technology are proficient in Adobe CS5 Dreamweaver, they instead say very general things like this: [insert standard example]
To make matters worse, many of these standards were written years ago. Just think what has happened technologically speaking since these standards were written. [give an example or ask for an examples of technological changes since the last update]
To make matters worse, many of these standards were written years ago. Just think what has happened technologically speaking since these standards were written. [give an example or ask for an examples of technological changes since the last update]
But outdated standards isnât the only issue we have. We have a long history or tension about the role of technology in our field. Great media debate might be one example of this. Reeser discusses this some in his book where he⊠[find what he says].
So there arenât any easy answers and unfortunately we donât have any easy answers for each of you. Rather, this is complicated stuff and we (i.e., those of us who coordinate degree programs in Instructional Design and Technology) all have to make tuff decisions along the way.
Ask the crowd about Dreamweaver and Flash? Then explain my background. And touch on students fascination with Flash
