Where are adolescents at in their development? “Who am I and where am I going?” Erikson- Identity Vs. Role Confusion      Freud- Early Genital  Adolescents must establish basic identities or they will be confused about what roles they must play in the future At school and with peers-either conform to what is “cool” or be rejected Hormones  going crazy / Puberty 2 Osborn-Adolescent / Bullying
What is bullying? Types of bullying… Verbal (Threats, Name-calling, Belittling) Physical (Beating, Weapons, Pushing) Indirect (Rumors, Graffiti , Stares) Cyber (E-mail, Facebook, MySpace, Websites, Chat-rooms, Instant-messaging) Cell phones (Voicemail, Text Messages, Phone calls, Picture Texts) 3 Osborn-Adolescent / Bullying
Hatefulness among adolescent females as portrayed by Hollywood in Mean Girls 4 Osborn-Adolescent / Bullying
Effects on Victims Feelings of anger (possibly take it out on someone else?) Being worried/stressed/scared (anxiety) Feeling alone, worthless, disliked, depressed, rejected Feelings of being exposed, used, violated, or dirty Physical pain Long-term emotional effects Suicidal thoughts or  acts Bystander / Bully and Victim  5 Osborn-Adolescent / Bullying
Bullying can result in Death and Suicide  Phoebe Prince committed suicide  January 14 as a result of cyber and traditional bullying. Conclusion: bullying can hinder development and may even lead to suicidal ideation. 6 Osborn-Adolescent / Bullying
New show  called      If You Really Knew Me Reality series that goes into real high schools and tries to breakdown stereotypes and subcultures through exercises and unite students Students usually are more aware of other students feelings and situations by end of program and make a pact not to pick on others and to be more open to all  Viewers are moved and show could possibly instill a shared value among viewers to be responsive to bullying instead of being bystanders, or to not bully 7 Osborn-Adolescent / Bullying Could MTV be spreading awareness ?
