The provision of reference and information services are one of the major activities for academic libraries. Answering questions and providing relevant and timely answers for library users are just one of such services. Questions come in many format: in person, phone, email and even on social media platforms. The type of questions may also differ from simple, directional to complicated ones. One of the challenges for libraries is the capturing and managing of these inquiries. Libraries need to address some of these points: • How the questions will be captured • How the questions will be answered • Who will answer these questions • What is the turn-around time for answering these questions • What kind of statistics to monitor • How are these statistics communicated to internal library staff and other stakeholders This paper describe the initiatives undertaken by KAUST, a brand new Graduate Research Library located in Saudi Arabia. This initiatives include the implementation of LibAnswers to assist the library in capturing and managing all inquiries. We are tracking inquiries coming in via email or widgets (such as online form), converting received questions into FAQ entries, creating and maintaining a public knowledge base for our users. In addition, it will also describe future plans in store to expand reference services for our library users.

A study that investigated first-year undergraduate student use of an Optical Character Recognition (OCR) mobile application designed to help students find resources for course assignments. The app uses textual content from the assignment sheet to suggest relevant library resources which students may not be aware. The study methodology used formative evaluation techniques; data were collected to inform the production level version of the mobile application and to understand student use models and requirements for OCR software in mobile applications.

Libraries, Archives and Museums now have massive digital holdings. There is tremendous potential for library and information science, computer science and computer engineering researchers to partner with cultural heritage institutions and make our digital cultural record more useful and usable. In particular, there is a significant need to bridge basic research in areas such as computer vision, crowdsourcing, natural language processing, multilingual OCR, and machine learning to make this work directly usable in the practices of cultural heritage institutions. In this talk, I discuss a series of exemplar projects, largely funded through the Institute of Museum and Library Services National Digital Platform initiative, that illustrate some key principles for building applied research partnerships with cultural heritage institutions. Building on Ben Schniderman’s The New ABCs of Research: Achieving Breakthrough Collaborations, I focus specifically on why the public purpose and missions of cultural heritage institutions are particularly valuable in establishing new kinds of collaborations that can simultaneously advance basic research and the ability for people of the world to engage with their cultural record.

Web-scale Discovery Services are becoming an integral part of libraries' information gathering arsenal. These services are able to use a single interface to seamlessly integrate results from a wide range of online sources, emulating the experience patrons have come to expect from Internet search engines. But despite their ability to streamline searching, discovery services provide a wide set of challenges for libraries who implement them. My colleague, Jodi Hoover, and I gave this presentation during our first MLS archives course. Our research investigated common reactions to, and perceptions of, archival research, particularly in how various users approach finding aids. In the final portion of our presentation we discussed the problem of "hidden collections" and possible ways to improve patron access to such collections.

The report is the culmination of a one-year multi-strand research project, and examines how users of the museums and libraries at the University of Oxford find the information they need (known as “resource discovery”), current practices among other institutions, and trends and possibilities for resource discovery in the future. Athenaeum21 led the end-user research and needs assessment portion of the project, and then led the synthesis and analysis of the data across all of the research strands, making the recommendations and writing the final report. The report defines the resource discovery strategy for the University for the next 5 years.
