  2. 2. The Chinook inhabited the area around the Columbia River in Washington, and Oregon, and the British Columbia..
  3. 3. Lifestyle <ul><li>The Chinook lived on the west coast, in the parts of what is now Oregon and Washington state. If you've been there, you'll know that it's a rather cold climate, and it rains constantly. However, the Chinook managed to survive. They built and lived in long wooden houses, commonly called 'longhouses'. </li></ul>
  4. 4. Lifestyle (Continued) <ul><li>The Chinook often put totem poles in front of their house to show their social rank, and how many generations were living there. </li></ul>
  5. 5. Lifestyle (Continued) <ul><li>They lived by fishing , but most often hunted deer and elk. Like most Native Americans of their time, they traded with other tribes for things such as furs. </li></ul>
  6. 6. Lifestyle (Continued) <ul><li>Apart from hunting on land and fishing, they also hunted seal and sea otter. </li></ul>
  7. 7. Religion <ul><li>The Chinook had a religion similar to that of surrounding Native Americans. They believed in animal gods, and a god of creation whom they called “Neakanie”. </li></ul><ul><li>Among their animal gods were bears, ravens, and eagles. </li></ul>
  8. 8. Modern Day Situation <ul><li>Most Chinooks in present day work as lumberers and casino owners. </li></ul><ul><li>There are PLENTY of casinos in Washington and Oregon. </li></ul><ul><li>One of the casinos, 7 Cedars, is located in Sequim, Washington. </li></ul>
