Lake Baikal

  2. 2. <ul><li>Lake Baikal is situated almost in the centre of the enormous mainland of Eurasia as a narrow blue half moon. </li></ul>
  3. 3. <ul><li>It is 636 km long and 80 km wide. It is surrounded by high hills and is as large as Belgium with its almost </li></ul><ul><li>10–million population, a number of cities and industrial centres, highways and railroads. </li></ul>
  4. 4. <ul><li>336 permanent rivers and brooks fall into Lake Baikal, the largest among them is the Selenga. </li></ul>
  5. 5. <ul><li>The only river which flows out Lake Baikal is the Angara. </li></ul>
  6. 6. <ul><li>The total area of the lake is 31 470 square kilometres. The maximal depth of the lake is 1637 m, the average depth is 730 m. </li></ul>
  7. 7. <ul><li>If you want to know how large Lake Baikal is you should imagine that 387 years of constant work is needed for the Angara river to dry its bowl. It’s certainly in case not a litre of water gets into or evaropates from the surface. </li></ul>
  8. 8. <ul><li>Lake Baikal is the deepest lake in the world, it’s without a doubt. There are 30 islands on Lake Baikal, the largest one is the island of Olkhon. </li></ul>
  9. 9. <ul><li>According to literary records this lake is 20-25 million years old. But actually we can’t state anything for sure. </li></ul><ul><li>If we consider that the age of Lake Baikal is a few million years, it is the most ancient lake on Earth. </li></ul>

  11. 11. <ul><li>Baikal water is unique and amazing as the lake itself. It’s unusually transparent, clear and rich in oxygen. It was considered to be healthy and healing in old times. It was used to treat for different illnesses. </li></ul>
  12. 12. <ul><li>In the spring the transparency of Baikal water is 40 m. It can be explained by the fact that due to the activity of living organisms dwelling there, the water in the lake is mineral and close to distilled. </li></ul>
  13. 13. <ul><li>The volume of water in Lake Baikal is about 23000 </li></ul><ul><li>that makes 20% of the world and 90% of Russian supplies of fresh water. </li></ul>
  14. 14. <ul><li>There is more water in Lake Baikal than in all five Great American lakes taken together (22725 km3 ). </li></ul>
