Pedro Martinez, CPO at NH Hoteles, presents Sustainability at NH and what has been driving this strategy forward at the Spanish hotel chain, during the Philips 2011 Partner Seminar at the Renaissance Amsterdam Hotel on Sept 22, 2011.
4. 1 What’s Sustainability?
• It’s doing the same (even more)
with less
same product/service with less COMPETIVITY
energy, water, waste, CO2…
• It’s a new way of doing things…
business model must be rethink. How
can we have less waste?, How can
we use our waste?, How can we sell
INNOVATION
our waste we can not use?.
• … that overcomes the business
and involves stakeholders.
to be successful own workers are
IMPLICATION &
essential, but we also need customer
and providers collaboration
MOTIVATION
5. Why Sustainability? Responsibility over Climate Change
Importance of buildings in European Union:
• Buildings are responsible for 40% of energy consumption and
36% of EU CO2 emissions.
• Energy performance of buildings is key to achieve the EU Climate
& Energy objectives, namely the reduction of a 20% of the
Greenhouse gases emissions and a 20% energy savings by
2020.
6. Why Sustainability? Scarcity

‘While many things about the future remain unclear, one thing is certain: more people in
urban areas means an increased demand for new buildings. And unless we change the
incredibly inefficient nature of today's buildings, it means an unprecedented increase in
energy use. It's a ticking time bomb’.
Christian Kornevall, project director for the World Business Council for Sustainable Development's Energy Efficiency in
Buildings Project. April 2011.
