2. OSTER CARE GRADUATE
Austin Foster Care
Graduate Center
Studio project - Spring 2009
This project is designed to be a
place of comfortable acclimation
for recent graduates of the central
Texas foster care system. Located
in park space along a major state
highway and adjacent Lady Bird
After Foster Care Center
Lake in Austin, this facility consists
of various living quarters conceived

actions of inhabitation. Specifically,
the concept of the building’s
programmatic arrangement is
derived from the specific spatial
needs of their occupants. Overall
architectural form is taken from the
language of the nearby highways.
Road-like roof forms initially draw
from this inspiration, ultimately
bending to accept ground circulation
and elevated occupation or decks.

These structures, when integrated
with solar towers and arrays of
glazing, also serve a vital role in

realizing sustainability strategies of
solar and rainwater collection, green
roofing and additionally shading the

6. SOCOmpact Studios
Studio project - Fall 2009
The objective of the project is to confront
under-utilized urban remnant space through
a minimal architectural intervention, while
simultaneously exploring the parametric ability
of building systems and form through Building
Information Modeling (BIM) software. The
site is located in South Austin along South
Congress Avenue in a small lot, which is
used predominately for parking and often
transformed due to the presence of art vendors
and street performers. In an attempt to increase
SOCOmpact Studios
the site’s occasional pedestrian density, the

insertion of a small building containing artist
studios serves to enrich and make permanent
this existing creative community. The structural
organization of the building emanates from
a two story circulatory core running east to
west in its long dimension. Studio spaces
with generous apertures protrude from that
central element to the north, peeking over
adjacent buildings and aligning with views of
the city. A lounge and shared restroom jut
out to the south. A unifying element of the
building, its facade employs a varying polygal
and opaque rigid panel curtain wall system.
The nature of this exterior allows access to
both abundant natural light and areas of solid
wall for interior placement of artwork. Multiple
building iterations were initially derived from an
exploration through BIM which tested various
formal decisions against several parameters
of site. Ultimately the building responds to
its limiting surroundings, a minimization of
building footprint and an acknowledgement
of both the pedestrian and view towards
downtown Austin.

11. Photo Cube
Studio project - Spring 2010
Places and experiences are collected
over a lifetime. They are filed as
memories and tucked on shelves in
corners as souvenirs and memorabilia.
The photo box project addresses the
idea of collecting and understanding

memories through physical objects;
specifically the conveying of experience
in a photograph. A simple wooden body is
cast in translucent wax, smoothing sharp

edges and lending a weighty, hand-worn
quality to the boxes. The heft and tactility
of the photo boxes gives a property of
physical mass to the collections that
they hold. These containers are also
meant as devices to re-contextualize
their contents, allowing new meanings to
arise within the photos’ isolated subjects.
Photos slide into the device through a
thin slot along its top edge. A series of
masks remove image from a conceived
environment, allowing the collection of
memories to considered from an altered
perspective.

13. Reel Studio
Studio project - Spring 2010
After extensive travel and a career as a
documentary film maker, the proposed
client of this project sought additional
studio space in his now overcrowded
south Austin bungalow. The resulting
structure serves as a place for editing
and digitizing, archiving and viewing an

up and around an existing concrete wall.
Controlled and filtered connections from
inside to outside frame an inhabitant’s
experience of surroundings. The
wrapping of the structure is continued as
the studio is enveloped with translucent
material acting both as solar shading
and film screen. The studio becomes
a device through which film is viewed
from within and from the adjacent yard.
Additional formal articulation is derived
by mimicking adjacent rooflines and
impeding tree growth, tying the studio
contextually to the site. Reel Studio is a
manifestation of collection and archive as
well an object through which an occupant
views and examines their surroundings
and the moving image.

16. Component and Shade Structure
Studio project - Fall 2009
This studio project was developed through
the iteration of two exercises; one to create
a modular component and another to apply
that element in mass to a small street-side
Component and Shade Structure
shade structure. The concept behind the
component specifically is one of adjustment

and collapsibility. By studying how a tubular
structure could be adapted to varying lengths,
the concept was further developed into a wall
system that could actively change thickness
and porosity. This variability of the system

allowed the components to be arranged in
numerous configurations, suitable for various
applications. The project culminated in the
design of a shade structure to be sited along
a particularly sunny street side in downtown
Austin, TX. The components that composed
the shade structure were elongated overhead,
to shade from direct sunlight according to
observed sun angles, and shortened and
open along the base to maximize porosity and
ventilation.

19. Austin Urban Raptor Rescue Center
Studio project - Spring 2009
Situated just north of Austin Texas’ Lady Bird
Lake within a park space tucked along and under
Texas Loop 1, this proposed center is designed
to serve injured urban birds of prey. Project
challenges were addressed by encapsulating
an environment of natural rehabilitation while

concrete and lumber buildings interact with the
elevated roadway, protruding horizontally to
collect occupants in entrance and protruding
vertically to serve as solar towers, highway
sound barrier and support for the flight cages.
The challenges of directly engaging a highway,
by constructing under one, ultimately allowed
for the creation of relatively sheltered inter-
building courtyard spaces and an opportunity
to reduce building cooling loads.

21. MoDFilm
Studio project - Spring 2010
The MoD Film project is a museum dedicated
to the viewing, preservation and research
of documentary film. Located in downtown
Austin, the building ties into the cites cultural
traffic as it is within walking distance to the
Austin Museum of Modern Art and the newly
renovated Art House. Central to MoD Film’s
collection are the thousands of raw footage,
stored in protective tins, that are showcased
within a translucent central core. Museum
visitors enter into a minor gallery before moving
through this film core along a set of stairs

ascending to a second floor image gallery.

Multiple screens arranged throughout this area
are projected upon expressing the overlapping
quality of visual information commonly seen in
documentary and the media. Adjacent to this
space a formal screening theater faces the
city’s core, screen visible from the street as
a beacon to the museum. The overall formal
considerations of the design are derived as
image displaying theater spaces wrap the
central core of film reels.
