Development of Mobile Deformable Barrier (MDB) as a car surrogate
Software : HYPERMESH, LS-DYNA,HYPERGRAPH, LSPOST
Operating system : HPUX
Company : GM Tech center, Bangalore
Client : Crash& safety group, GM, North America

Description
Objective of this project is to develop the concept of Mobile Deformable Barrier which acts as a car
surrogate in car to truck compatibility studies. A midsize passenger car which represents the average car
fleet in US is considered for this study and finite element simulations were carried out with car-to-LTV
impacts. An MDB concept is then developed to represent the front end of the car by using honeycomb
blocks with various crush strengths, and compared its effectiveness with real car simulations. MDB is fine
tuned so that its response matches with the car response.

Research paper on the above work has been published in SAE conference April 2007

Client : Crash& safety group, GM, North America

Description
Objective of this project is to evaluate the various structural parameters like HOF (Height of Force), AHOF
(Average Height of force) and CV (Coefficient of variation) for impact of GMT305 LTV on Full width
deformable barrier and to correlate the simulation with the test results.

A full width rigid and deformable barrier (developed by TRL, UK) crash simulations have been carried out
to understand the crush behavior of the vehicle and to calculate HOF and CV which play important role in
improving the structural interaction. Changes are incorporated in the Full Width Deformable Barrier
received from TRL to control the intrusions between the first and second layers of the deformable barrier.
A Secondary Energy Absorbing Structure is added to the lower part of the vehicle front rails of LTV to
have the good structural interaction with the struck vehicle (car) and studied the effect of it.

Finite Element Model Updating for Dynamic Mechanical structutres
Software                   : C, C++, I-DEAS, ICATS, MATLAB
Network OS : Windows NT 4.0
Institute : IIT Delhi

Description:
This project involves finding out the optimum system parameters required in machine tools to
improve dynamic characteristics. It deals with the finite element analysis of machine structure
using developed codes in C, C++ & MATLAB. Experimentation is carried out on the structure
and obtained FRF’s are analysed using Experimental modal analysis techniques. Finite element
model of the structure is updated on the strength of experimental results by using updating
techniques (Direct and Iterative). A software is developed to compare both theoretical and
experimental results and to update the theoretical model of the structure. Two mass modifications
on the structure have been tried by conducting experimentation, and the obtained experimental
results are compared with both FE and Updated models. Finally it has been concluded that
updated model results are closely matching with the experimental results after modification.
