This presentation provides retail sales analysis by industry and province. There is an inclusion of Amazon as way to show how online sales are expanding in 2016.
5. SUMMARY
Province
• Canadian retail sales were flat in August with a slight drop of -0.1% from July, following an earlier -0.1% drop
from June. Year-over-year sales are up by 1.6% since August 2015.
• Ontario sales were down 0.7% on a month-to-month basis, Ontario having been one of the leading provinces
growth-wise in the first half of the year.
• BC remains significantly stronger than the other provinces. On a year-over-year basis, BC is a standout with
growth of 5.1%.
• Year-over-year declines in New Brunswick (-1.9%) and Newfoundland (-0.7%) may be associated with recent
tax changes and messages of restraint as the two provinces wrestle with their budget imbalances but both
provinces did relatively better in August than they did in July.
• Alberta and Saskatchewan both saw small declines (-0.1% and -0.4% respectively) in August. Their year-over-
year numbers (-3.9% and -0.3% respectively), reflect continued resource industry challenges.

6. SUMMARY
Industry
• As with other recent Recent Fast Fact releases, the picture varies significantly depending on whether gasoline sales,
cars and car parts are included in the total. Together, these make up about one-third of total retail sales. The
volatile price of gasoline and the level of car sales can thus have a major impact on the overall picture for retail.
• Broader patterns in retail are considerably more positive. On a year-over-year basis, sales excluding cars and gas
grew 3.0% versus -1.1% growth in cars and gas.
• The strong growth performance year-over-year in building materials (+6.3%) flattened in the month of August (-
0.5%).
• Health and personal care stores continue their sales growth, up +0.7% in August and +7.9% year-over-year.
• Shoe store sales tell a similar story, up +0.6% in August and a whopping +9.3% year-over-year.
• On cross-border shopping, same-day car trips by Canadians to the U.S. were down 1.4% or 30 thousand trips for
August 2016 over August 2015, while inbound trips from U.S. visitors increased by 1.4% or 13 thousand trips,
reflecting the prevailing exchange rate.
