This document provides tips for optimizing a Facebook timeline page. It recommends choosing a beautiful cover photo and clearly branded profile picture. It also suggests pinning important posts, featuring important apps, and using the admin panel to manage the page and view insights. It advises highlighting great historical posts while hiding embarrassing ones. Finally, it notes that previewing the new page design now allows customizing it before an automatic upgrade on March 30, 2012.
19. In summary, here’s a checklist of the most important things to do
with your Timeline
1. Choose a beautiful cover
Cover photo dimensions are 851 x 315 pixels.
Provide a punchy description in the About section
2. Use a clearly branded profile picture
Use a high-quality image that scales from 180 x 180 pixels to 32 x
32 pixels thumbnail image. Your profile picture follows your
business or organization on Facebook as a thumbnail image in news
feed stories, ads, and featured stories.
3. Pin the post you want to drive the most traffic to
Pin an important story to the top of your Page each week. Posts
can stay pinned for up to seven days.

20. 4. Feature your most important apps
Choose the other three views and apps you want to appear by
default on your Page. You can include up to 12 views and
apps.
Adjust the way your custom apps appear on your Page by
going to “Manage” from the admin panel and choose “Edit
Page” in the drop-down menu. Under the “Apps” section, click
“Edit Settings” for the specific app image (111 x 74 pixels)
you’d like to adjust.
Page app width can now be adjusted to be “Narrow” (520px)
or “Wide” (810px) in the Developer App under “Edit App”.

Use the admin panel to view Page Insights, keep track of new
activity and respond to personal messages.
Set your best posts as “Allowed on Timeline”
Make sure that visitors of your Page see your most
important content. Set your favorite posts from others to
“Allowed on Timeline” in the activity log.
Use Page Insights to optimize your Page posts. For
example, find out when people engage most with your
content and post during those hours.

The redesign of how Page apps are displayed could be the primary disadvantage of Timeline for Pages. Apps have been relocated from the left navigation sidebar to the right side of the About section. While they appear with thumbnail photos instead of as text links, they’re overshadowed by the massive cover above. There are four app tiles above the fold, and the first is permanently occupied by Photos. The rest can include Likes, Videos, Events, Map and a Page’s custom apps.
Previously, Pages could set a default landing tab that all non-fans would first see instead of the wall when they visited a Page. This is no longer allowed. Instead, users always see the main Timeline view and have to actively click through to custom apps. This means custom apps for your contests, promotions, games, media, coupons, and signup widgets may receive much less engagement from users who find their way to your Page.
Pages also often used “Like-gates” on their default landing app, requiring users to Like a Page in exchange for the ability to use the app. While Like-gates are still permitted, they’re not nearly as powerful since they won’t be the first thing users see when they visit a page.
To edit which apps you display, click the drop-down icon to the right of the tiles, click the ‘+’ button to import your custom apps, and then hover over them and click the pencil to swap them around. I recommend putting the native or custom apps most crucial to your business above the fold, so coupons for ecommerce brands, contests for consumer packaged good companies, events for promoters, etc. Only display the Likes panel if you have a lot of them and want to peer pressure new visitors into Liking your Page.
With this feature, you can see how many of someone’s friends like your page and how they are interacting with your page. This will help your page with peer recommendation. Pay close attention to what interactions are happening and always be responsive if you found any negative comments.
