Professional Job Roles
Producer: A film producer or movie producer is someone who creates the scenes and conditions for making movies. The producer initiates, co-ordinates, supervises and controls matters such as fund-raising, hiring key personnel and arranging for distributors. The producer is involved throughout all phases of the film-making process from development to completion of a project.
Director: A film director, or filmmaker, is a person who directs the making and/or the production of a film. A film director is a person who visualizes the screenplay, controlling a film's artistic and dramatic aspects, while guiding the technical crew and actors in the fulfillment of his or her vision. Film directors are responsible for overseeing creative aspects of a film. The director works closely with the cast and crew to shape the film. The director also plays a key role in post-production. He/she works with the editor to ensure that the emotions of the scene and the close ups, mid shots and wide or long shots appropriately reflect which character is driving the narrative.
Production Assistant: Also known as a ‘PA’ is a job title used in filmmaking and television for a person responsible for various aspects of a production. Production assistants are usually divided into two categories: quot;
office PAsquot;
or quot;
set PAsquot;
. Office PAs usually spend most hours in the show's production office handling such tasks as phones, deliveries, script copies, lunch pick-ups, and related tasks in coordination with the production manager and production coordinator. Set PAs work on the physical set of the production, whether on location or on a sound stage. Duties include echoing (calling out) quot;
rollsquot;
and quot;
cutsquot;
, locking up (making sure nothing interferes with a take), helping the talent and background, aiding communication between departments.
Cameraperson: The operator is responsible for physically operating the camera and maintaining composition throughout a given scene or shot. In narrative filmmaking, the camera operator will collaborate with the director, director of photography, actors and crew to make technical and creative decisions. In this setting, a camera operator is part of a camera crew consisting of the director of photography and one or more camera assistants. Important camera operator skills include choreographing and framing shots, knowledge of and the ability to select appropriate photographic lenses, and other equipment (dollies, camera cranes, etc.) to portray dramatic scenes. The principles of dramatic story telling and film editing fundamentals are important skills as well. The camera operator is required to communicate clearly and concisely on film sets where time and budget constraints are ever present.
Editor: Film editing is part of the post-production process of filmmaking. It involves the selection and combining of shots, connecting the resulting sequences, and ultimately creating a finished motion picture. It is an art of storytelling. A film editor is a person who practices film editing by assembling the footage. However, the job of an editor isn’t simply to mechanically put pieces of a film together, cut off film slates, or edit dialogue scenes. A film editor must creatively work with the layers of images, story, dialogue, music, pacing, as well as the actors' performances to effectively quot;
redirectquot;
and even rewrite the film to craft a cohesive whole. Editors usually play a dynamic role in the making of a film.
Within our thriller opening sequence ‘Paperchain’, we shared most of the roles between us because there are only three of us.
However to categorize our roles more precisely…
Director- Dunia, Elias, Shanti
Producer- Shanti
Producers Assistant- Ourselves
Cameraperson- Shanti and Dunia (and Elias)
Editor- Elias and Dunia (and Shanti)
Actor- Elias
