1. How Youth Are Represented In
Media
By Panashe Nyamariwata
2. Representation in the news
Youth are usually represented negatively within the media (E.g. As Thugs, yobs,
feral etc.). The only time they are not described negatively, is when they are a
victim of a crime, act of violence or dead. When they are victims of any of these
negative situations, they are described in a positive manner (E.g. As angels, high
achievers etc.). This creates the contrast between hoodies and alter boys, which is
another way of differentiating the good and the bad boys and splitting them up
into these two categories.
3. Hoodies Or Alter Boys
• Hoodies are used to describe the bad boys who engage with negative activities
which effect their regional or national society such as, stealing, violence, gang
activity and anti social behaviors (ASBOS).
• Alter boys are boys who do positive things for society such as voluntary work and
are usually high achievers in school and sporting activities.
Examples:
Hoodies: This image shows a
young male using a gun to
intimidate
Altar boy: He gets bitten by a
spider on a school/college trip
and adapts super powers which
he uses to help society by fighting
crime
