by Ben Quiñones Chairman, CSRSME Asia Will you be the next Social Entrepreneur?
For every baby born each day, there is one Filipino who goes abroad as overseas worker. Our educational system is geared towards molding the youth to opt for secure salaried job rather than the adventure of enterprise creation. The greatest need of our country today are Entrepreneurs. The greatest adventure of a lifetime is the learning journey.
What is an Entrepreneur? An entrepreneur is person who: • creates something new, something different; • changes or transmutes values • drastically upgrades yield from resources • creates new market and new customer by applying management concepts & techniques • is a creator of wealth • is innovative; innovation is the specific instrument of entrepreneurship Reference: Peter Drucker, 1985. Innovation and Entrepreneurship
Class Discussion Statement: “A person cannot be an Entrepreneur unless he is engaged in a profit-taking business”. Do you agree or disagree with this statement? State your reasons why you agree or disagree.
Two types of entrepreneurs according to motivation Profit-centered entrepreneur : An entrepreneur who creates wealth for himself and his immediate family, irregardless of adverse consequences to society and the environment. The Socially Responsible Entrepreneur or Social Entrepreneur : An entrepreneur who helps creates wealth not only for his benefit but also for the benefit of his workers and the community at large, while protecting the environment for future generation .
Why do people normally equate business and entrepreneurship with the profit motive? Mental models Mental Models are deeply ingrained assumptions, generalizations, or even pictures or images that influence how we understand the world and how we take action. Very often, we are not aware of our mental models or the effects they have on our behavior
What do most people become imprisoned by mental models? They are unaware of their own mental models. They have Learning Disabilities .
What is Learning Disability ? A significant difficulty in the acquisition and use of listening, speaking, reading, writing, reasoning or logical abilities/ skills.
Why is it important to learn about the learning disabilities of people in organizations? Learning disabilities lead to skilled incompetence. Overcoming learning disabilities among members/ employees significantly contribute to development of LEARNING ORGANIZATIONS .
Learning Disability (LD) 1 : “I am my position.” You see your responsibilities as being limited to the boundaries of your position or designation . LD2 : “The enemy is out there.” You fail to see how your action extend beyond the boundary of your position/responsibilities. LD3 : The illusion of taking charge . When you cannot solve a problem, or encounter difficulty, you tend to push or work harder. LD 4: The Fixation on Events . You focus on short term events, not about the long-term goal of lifting the burden of the collective whole
LD 5. The parable of the boiled frog . Like the frog, your survival instinct is geared to sudden changes in your environment, You have not learned to see slow, gradual processes. LD6 : The delusion of learning from experience You don’t directly experience the consequence of many of your important decisions. You don’t learn to detect cycles in the things that you do. LD7 : The Myth of the Management Team. You listen to friends who excel in advocating their views. You discourage those who inquire into complex issues
