1. Subtraction of Fraction with Picture

same. Now we will try to subtract five over six and one over six. Let’s look at the
watermelon, cut the watermelon into six pieces. Take away one piece, we are left with
four pieces, so five minus one equals four but look, we really did we? We just subtract
the numerators, so we get the answer of five over six minus one over six equals to four
over six, we reduced to two over three.
2. Subtraction of fraction without picture
For the second example we will do subtraction without picture, we will subtract nine over
thirteen minus seven over thirteen, equals to what? We will do the same with the first
example, we just need to subtract the numerators of nine over thirteen and seven over
thirteen. Nine minus seven equals two, so we get the answer nine over thirteen minus
seven over thirteen is two over thirteen.
3. Subtraction of fraction with different denominators
We will to try to count three over five minus an half. Here we have to find common the
denominators which is the LCM. The LCM of five and two is ten . therefore the
denominator for both of fractions will be ten. Change the first number, three over five.
So that has ten as the denominator. And then change the second number an half. So that
is has ten as the denominators. And the numerators will be six and five, so we subtract
six minus five equals one. Thus, we get the answer three over five minus an half equals
one over ten.
4. Subtraction of fraction with different denominators
For the last example, we will subtract eight over sixteen minus two over eight, the LCM
of sixteen and eight is sixteen. So we get sixteen as our new denominators. Two over
eight will be four over sixteen, thus we get eight over sixteen minus for over sixteen
equals four over sixteen. We can reduce four over sixteen which is a quarter.
