monitor business processes in Opsview.

Introduction
• Business process monitoring enables you to get a complete
picture of the performance of services and systems that are
key to the running of your organisation.
• This blog post will tell you how to create a business process
dashboard – this example demonstrates end-to-end
monitoring of your web site.

Configuration
• Firstly, we need to create the appropriate service checks.

• Below is a list of the service checks we have created to
perform our website monitoring.

Configuration
• Now we have our checks created, we will need to assign these
to a host using a host template:
• Go to: CONFIGURATION > HOST TEMPLATES

• Click ‘MONITORS’, then select the monitors to be added to
your Host Template.

• Once you have created your host template, you can now apply
this to your host (see article on how to apply a host template
for Operating System monitoring).
• A dashboard will need to be created to provide a business
window into your health monitors.
• CONFIGURATION > KEYWORDS

• Click ‘OBJECTS’, then apply the service checks appropriate for
your dashboard.

• Reload Opsview, then go to:
• STATUS > KEYWORD SUMMARY. You will now see your new
dashboard.

• This dashboard provides a window into your complete
business flow – from DNS checks, through to SSL certificate
expiry, to website response times.
• You can set up checks for as many services as needed to get
an overall picture of the health of your systems.

Business Process Maps in Opsview 4.1
• In Opsview 4.1 business processes can be monitored using
‘maps’ – images of network topologies for example can be
uploaded and performance tags can be added to the map.
• Adding a process map in Opsview 4.1 is done via the
“DASHBOARDS” tab; as process maps are a dashlet.

• To add a new process map, users must first choose whether
they want to add to an existing dashboard to create a new
dashboard.
• Once decided/created, click on the left hand menu and drag
the “PROCESS MAP” icon onto the dashboard. This will give
you a screen as below:

• We will now upload the image we wish to use as the
background for our process map (for example a Visio diagram
in .jpg/png format)
• To do this, click on the “gear”/settings icon in the top left of
the process map, and the screen below will appear:

• In the above example, we have browsed to our image, and
then clicked Upload – now all we need to do is click “save”,
and the image is uploaded to our process map, as below. We
can then re-size the process map, so that the image fits
perfectly:

• Now we have the image uploaded, we can begin adding our
health tags/service tags, such as “service status” and
“performance metrics”.
• To do this, right click on the image, and choose the item you
want to add.

• Once you click on each item, a configuration page will appear,
asking you to choose the host/metrics, along with the size,
direction (for arrows), etc. Using process maps, it is possible
to create high level informational diagrams, as below:
