iBeacon, what is it and what can we do with it?
Michel van Velde - One Shoe
The iBeacon was briefly introduced at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference in June 2013, but what is it and what can we expect of it? Michel van Velde, founder of the advertising & digital agency One Shoe, will give an introduction of this new technology.
We will take a look at how it works, look at how bluetooth marketing has evolved and talk about the possibilities of the iBeacon.

Content delivery - iBeacons don't actually send content. They simply broadcast
their UUID, Major, and Minor values. That's it!
Detection awareness - iBeacons just broadcast. There is no data exchanged
between devices which are scanning for beacons and the beacons themselves.
Immediate detections - iBeacons aren't always immediately noticed. There are
a few factors that influence this such as:
- How frequently the beacon broadcasts (varies based on beacon
manufacturer or user settings)
- How often the device scans for a beacon (newer iPhones have improved
support for BLE, so they will probably be more responsive)
Distance accuracy - distance is always an ESTIMATE. More signals in the air
equals more interference!
Only compatible with Apple devices. Any device that supports BLE can detect
and broadcast.
