Visual Imagination
Gestures, as we have seen, are properties of
line and shape. It is clear then, that line and
shape act as communicative devices beyond
mere symbols, such as letters, numbers etc.
The greatest discovery of my generation is that
human beings can alter their lives by altering
their attitude.
William James – Harvard University
How long a person keeps his or her job is another
matter.
Attitudes are the established ways of responding to
people and situations that are learned, and are based
on the beliefs, values and assumptions we hold.
Attitude is manifest through our behavior.
Your body language is a result of your mental
attitude. By choosing your attitude you get in that
mood and send out a message that everyone
understands, consciously or unconsciously.
"Almost always, you have a choice as to what
attitude to adopt. There is nothing in any normal
work situation that dictates you must react one way
or another. If you feel angry about something that
happens, for instance, that's how you choose to
feel. Nothing in the event itself makes it absolutely
necessary for you to feel that way. It is your choice.
And since you do have a choice, most of the time,
you'll be better off if you choose to react in a
positive rather than a negative way."
1000 Things you never learned in Business School. William Yeomans -1985
“We see things , not as they are but as we are.”
Communication is not just about the words you use.
In fact, you communicate more with your gestures
and expressions, your body language. Become
aware of your body language, and that of other
people's and see how much you can learn about
what someone saying just by watching them.
Your attitude is the first thing people pick up on in
face-to-face communication. Just as laughing,
yawning, and crying are infectious, attitude is
infectious. Before you say a word, your attitudes
can infect the people who see you with the same
behavior. Somehow just by looking or feeling, you
can be infected by another person's attitude, and
vice versa..
Can attitude be used on stage to effect audience
behavior?
While body language may suggest a certain
physicality, a more subtle form of body
expression, can be detected in the lines and
shapes of our facial features.
Everyone, at some time, feels the six basic
emotions: happiness, surprise, fear, sadness,
disgust and anger. There are over 600 words
in English to describe them and we use 42
muscles in our faces to express them.
There are, of course, many more nuances to
these emotions, many of them arising from
specific circumstances through which we
experience them.
FOR EXAMPLE: one may feel generally angry,
but specifically, the expression may emerge
as:
A. disgust
B. betrayal
C. jealousy
We have learned to express emotion visually,
through the re-shaping of our bodies and
facial features; our eye brows, lips and skin.
The nose is often re shaped as well.
Because we can recognize the lines and
shapes of our emotions, we can often
characterize our emotions and attitudes
in cartoons and caricatures.
Caricatures often generalize expressions
Into “stock gesture” because they can easily
Be recognized within a given social context.
Masks often
depict stock
types and stock
emotions also.

scenes as a distinguished character.

through these eye illustrations?
